Chapter 82: Chapter 82 I Was Prof. Callahan’s Student

She had suddenly come out of nowhere, startling Jade.

Jade pressed a hand against her beating heart and frowned slightly, squinting her eyes at this person who was talking to her so formally.

Before she could ask her she was, the director who had just offended Jade by asking her to see the VIP, beat her to it.

"Miss, you must be close with Prof. Callahan. I’m a director in this hospital and a friend of the professor is a friend of ours. Are you here to also take part in the surgery that has been scheduled for this afternoon?"

His motive was so clear everyone saw right through him and immediately knew what he was planning to do.

The other two directors immediately felt a bit offended and began to glare at him. Not because of what he was doing, but because he seized the opportunity too quickly.

Only a few people could speak to Jade so casually. So after seeing how Laura spoke to Jade and she didn’t get offended, they also felt this was a good opportunity to get close to her.

Hearing he was a hospital director, the corners of Laura’s lips stretched into a wide smile.

"Oh, hello. Nice to meet you, sir. I’m Laura Sutton. I was a student of Prof. Callahan from a young age."

Although trying to hide it, the man’s eyes widened elatedly hearing her and he couldn’t stop the joyous smile that crept onto his face.

"You were her student from a young age? Then you must be really close to the professor. I didn’t even know the professor had someone like that."

In the past, Laura had often bragged about being Jade’s student and never got into trouble because of it.

Because of this, she concluded Jade saw no harm in her doing this. But in truth, Jade never heard such a thing. Hence, didn’t act on any.

Laura expected today to be no different from the past. So ignoring that Jade was present, she nodded in agreement to his words.

"Prof. Callahan and I have known each other since I was a little girl. Because of her, I studied to be a neurosurgeon."

"I interned at Haven Medical Center two years ago before taking a break for personal reasons. But I’m back now."

"If you were a student of Prof. Callahan, then you must’ve graduated with honors and in flying colors." Another director couldn’t resist chipping, flashing her a warm smile.

Seeing this, Laura was on cloud nine.

She had only been here for a few minutes and these directors were swarming around her as soon as she threw out Jade’s name.

If it kept going like this, she would be a doctor at Haven Medical Center by the end of the day.

With that thought, she smiled humbly and shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ears.

"Of course. I learnt so much from the professor that a lot of people at Haven Medical Center were baffled when they learnt I was just an intern."

"Many thought I was a doctor already because of the vast knowledge I possess on difficult surgeries."

Not wanting to be left out, the third director jumped in.

"Amazing. To tell you what, I’ve heard Prof. Callahan has been nurturing someone to succeed after her."

"You know she became a professor when she was just 25, right? It could be she’s nurturing you to follow in her footsteps."

In response to their words, everyone turned their eyes to Jade who had a blank look on her face as she pinned her eyes on Laura.

Laura anxiously tugged the corners of her dress when she saw the confusion in Jade’s eyes, realizing she had been careless.

Jade had numerous kids as students back then and she wasn’t even the best. But she had bragged with her name so many times that she couldn’t rein in her tongue now.

Just when she saw Jade part her lips to say something, one of the directors suddenly laughed.

"Look at her. She must be shocked that we figured out her successor so soon."

The other directors laughed as well.

"Don’t you worry, Professor. We know you want this to be kept a secret, so we won’t tell anyone who you’ve selected to be your successor."

"We have a lot of flaws, but we’d never let it slip that we’ve met your brilliant successor before. You can count on us."

It was at this moment that the first-year resident returned with the news of the scan result being out.

The directors quickly led them to a nearby vacant office where they viewed the scan on a computer and projected it on a screen.

"What do you see?" Jade asked her assistants out of habit.

Naturally, the directors’ eyes and that of the two doctors’ darted towards Laura for the answer.

She smiled nervously and glanced at the screen a second time, but bit down on her lower lip in extreme confusion.

Jade wondered what the silence was about and followed their eyes.

Seeing Laura, she hummed and folded her arms across her chest.

"Ms. Sutton, you say you were my student. Then surely, you can tell me the patient’s condition from this scan."

"What? I mean, yes, I can. But should I really?" Laura laughed curtly, her eyes darting across the room anxiously, thinking of how to improvise.

Her eyes continued darting across the room until it landed on Kelsie who was unhurriedly tapping her foot against the floor.

What happened half an hour ago came flooding back into her mind, along with the curses she had received and the praises they had showered on Kelsie.

She sucked in a deep breath and gently shook her head.

"I already know these things. We should give those who don’t the opportunity to learn."

Then she called out to Kelsie. "Kelsie, why don’t you tell us what is wrong with the brain scan on the screen?"

Jade was surprised to hear her call out to Kelsie and was about to ask how they knew each other, when the directors instantly agreed with Laura.

Kelsie had belittled them by walking beside Jade. They wanted to know just how good a little girl like her was to earn a spot beside the picky professor.

She hadn’t said another word to them all these while besides the greeting she mumbled when she joined them.

Even when they complained and lashed out at her, she didn’t bother to defend herself.

They had quickly concluded she was a student Jade favored because she was her successor, but after meeting Laura, they began to think differently.

When three seconds went by without her saying anything, Laura pretended to have made a mistake and dramatically facepalmed herself.

"Oh, sorry. You being here confused me. How did you sneak into the group when you know nothing about neurosurgery?" fre ewe bnove l.com

"Did you think hearing Prof. Callahan speak in person will miraculously impart knowledge into you?"

Upon being called out, Kelsie raised her eyes to look at Laura.

Earlier, she resolved to let Laura tell her lie as long as she didn’t drag her into anything, but she underestimated Laura’s ’love’ for her.

Since Laura loved her so much, she had no choice, but to return it in ten fold now.
