Chapter 81 Slipping Out
Chapter 81: Chapter 81 Slipping Out
Jade Callahan walked through the hospital building with her two assistants, three of the hospital directors and two doctors from a nearby teaching hospital trailing behind her.
Had it been just her and her assistants, not a lot of people would’ve known she was in the hospital as doctors doing their rounds with juniors wasn’t rare.
So it took nothing for every of the hospital’s staff to know who she was
But while everyone else trailed behind her, Kelsie walked right beside her, surprising everyone.
"Is she a doctor in this hospital or a doctor from a teaching hospital?"
"Maybe she’s a resident who is close with the Professor."
"If the Professor is close with a resident, we would’ve heard of it. Could she be a colleague?"
"Colleague? I doubt. Look at her. She seems to still be in her twenties. Someone that young can’t be a professor."
"You’re right. I can’t wrap my finger around who she is, but she must be someone talented for the Professor to keep her beside her."
Unlike the hospital staffs who were curious about Kelsie and craning their necks to get a better look at her, the hospital directors and those from the teaching hospital were murmuring underneath their breath.
But only the directors were bold enough to speak out.
"They’re right, Professor. Why do you have us walk behind you while a young girl like her gets to walk beside you?"
Jade wasn’t in a hurry to retort. She first slipped her hands into the pockets of her coat before repeating, "What do you mean by that, Director? When did I ever tell you to walk behind me?"
The man was instantly refnered speechless.
Indeed, she hadn’t asked them to do so, but that was what they always did whenever a renowned doctor visited.
It was their way of showing them respect.
So had he known Jade didn’t care about any of that, he would’ve been the first to stand beside her!
But since he didn’t know this, he refused to let anyone, let alone, someone several decades younger than him to be this close with Jade.
"Well, you didn’t tell us to walk behind you, but it’s common sense and our way or showing you we respect you. People who act like her hardly know anything."
The other two directors nodded the agreement.
"He’s right. Even if she’s a favorite student of yours, she shouldn’t take your closeness for granted and walk beside you. You shouldn’t have brought someone like her."
"Is it because of her beauty? We have way prettier people in our hospital for you to choose from."
Jade finally stopped walking, prompting everyone to do the same.
She slipped a hand out of her pocket, glancing over her shoulder at the directors.
"When I accepted to schedule a few surgeries at your hospital since I’d be in town, didn’t we agree that you’d let me come with whomever I want?"
The directors silently glanced at each other before nodding in agreement.
"Y-yes, we did."
Jade then raised a questioning brow, "Then why do you seem to have a problem with someone who came with me?"
"Does being pretty and walking beside me mean she has no respect and has no skills? Even if it does, what does it matter to you who I came with?"
All three of them hurriedly shook their head in refusal realizing they had offended her.
"You got us all wrong, Professor. We’re just saying..."
One of them was saying when she cut him off.
"You’re saying that you’re the ones who deserve to walk beside me. I get it. But I never also said you shouldn’t do so."
"If walking beside me will increase your image in this hospital, then please, do walk beside me."
"I’d gladly forfeit the two surgeries I came to take care of and continue walking around this hospital with you three."
At this, the men instantly clamped their mouths shut and lowered their eyes to the floor apologetically..
But despite doing this, they were cursing her out for talking back to them so bluntly in front of everyone else.
Jade sighed softly and gently massaged the back of her beck before she started walking again.
They walked for ten seconds before she suddenly made a right instead of heading towards an elevator.
At this, one of the directors called out to her, "Prof. Callahan, that way leads to the operating room. We have a VIP upstairs who has ependymoma."
She nodded almost immediately.
"My residents filled me in. However, I’d like to take a look around the emergency room before performing the surgery."
Another director stepped forward and shook his head in refusal, "I fear we don’t have that time. This patient is very important to the hospital and a public figure."
"He donated a building to the hospital when he heard you’d be performing his surgery. So we suggest you go in to see him first."
Jade stopped walking for the second time and began taking off her coat without another word.
Everyone was instantly perplexed.
Then the directors grew worried.
"Goodness, Professor. Why are you suddenly taking off your coat?"
Jade didn’t respond.
She checked her coat for a moment before reaching for her neck, then she glanced at him in confusion.
"That is odd. You keep telling me what to do like I work for this hospital. So I expected to see an employee card around my neck."
The director’s face stiffened in embarrassment.
But as he lowered his eyes to the floor in apology, he clenched his fist tightly beside him.
Nevertheless, he still apologized, "I didn’t mean to offend you, Prof. Callahan."
Jade glanced at his clenched fist and scoffed lightly, "No, you did."
By the side, Kelsie yawned tiredly and glanced at the time.
Were these people not already displeased with her being here, she would’ve walked out on Jade already.
If she left now, she was sure she’d offend them even more. Not that it bothered her, but she didn’t want to annoy such high profile people in case she needed help in the future in curing her daughter.
She could only bear the waste of her time in silence.
Jade wore the coat again and continued walking to the emergency room. This time, no one dared to say anything.
They had just walked in when a screaming man was wheeled into the hospital.
The first-year resident rushing in with him didn’t bother to take a proper look at them after seeing their doctor’s coat.
He stopped in front of Jade to report, "The patient is a 26-year-old male. Due to a gas explosion at his construction site, a battery got stuck in his eye. We did a..."
He immediately trailed off, gripped with fear when he looked up and recognized the hospital directors behind Jade.
Jade, on the other hand, was already strutting towards the screaming voice of the man until she got to the room he was in.
"My eyes! Will I go blind? My eyes hurts so much!"
She took out her penlight to check his other eye before speaking to him calmly, "Pease stop moving. Stay still. Stop moving before the battery goes in the deeper."
The man gripped her by the arm, barely able to contain his pain, "D-doctor, I’m in so much pain. Please help me. I don’t want to be blind."
Putting back her penlight, Jade flashed him a small smile.
"Please calm down, can you you raise your right arm..."
After going through the formalities with him, she turned to the first-year and instructed him to hurry up with the scan.
It was at this moment that Laura, who had been waiting for the perfect opportunity to slip in, rushed out so jovially.
"Prof. Callahan, I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Are you performing a surgery already? Let me assist you."
