Chapter 232: Chapter 232 The Issue With The Baker Family... And Their In-laws

The Baker Family House in Silicon Valley

Bryan Baker stood before an elderly man with white stubble and firm, disciplinary eyes.

His face was twisted into a stern frown as he watched a video on a tablet.

After the video ended, he turned off the screen and raised his head to glare at his grandson.

"You fool! How long has this video been circulating online, and how long did you plan to wait before telling me about it?"

Bryan lowered his eyes, gritting his teeth in fear as he muttered, "Grandfather, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Just harmless play between boys, which I was handling."

"You don’t have to worry about it. Go back home and I’ll take care of it. I always take care of these things, remember?"

The words had barely left his mouth when the old man hurled the tablet at him.

Bryan, whose eyes were still lowered, didn’t see the device coming and was hit squarely in the face.

He groaned in pain and stumbled backward, both hands flying to his forehead in both surprise and shock at the sudden attack.

Landon Baker held the arm of his chair tightly as he fumed indignantly, "You’ll handle it? Don’t give me that nonsense! I sent you here to do one thing; marry into the Sutton family and oversee the branch here!"

"But what do I get in return? A branch in disarray! Staff are being fired and you’re barely making any money! Don’t you know you hire new staffs when you fire old ones?"

"You don’t seem to have made much progress with the Sutton family either. What exactly have you been doing here for the past twelve months, you stupid idiot?!"

Bryan exhaled shakily, immediately defending himself, "Grandfather, it’s really not as bad as you think. I fired those staff members because they were underperforming. But I’m yet to find better people to replace them."

"And the company is making money. The only time we had consecutive losses was in April and May. In the other months, we barely suffered losses and made, at most, five percent profit each month."

Landon Baker was astounded at the nonsense spilling from his grandson’s mouth.

What? The branch suffered losses for two months, but when it didn’t, it made five percent profit?

And given how he said at most, that must’ve been the highest they ever reached since he sent him here.

"You know what? I’ll deal with you later." Landon suddenly relaxed back on his seat and subtly waved him off.

Seeing how his grandfather’s anger seemed to subside after hearing about the five percent profit, Bryan smirked, thinking he’d outdone himself and lifted his head proudly.

Right.

If he could bring the branch profit, then he’d have no problem teaching that bastard, who leaked the surveillance footage of him being beaten by Kelsie in the supermarket, a lesson.

That bastard had done an excellent job blurring her face, but everyone could tell it was a woman.

How was he supposed to hold his head high with a video like that going viral?

That retard... he’d pay once Grandfather left!

"You’re my heir, and I’ve been preparing you to marry into the Sutton family. However, it’s been over ten years since we arranged that engagement, and there’s been no progress."

"Call Jerry Sutton. I want to know why neither of our children has signed the marriage certificate."

Landon suddenly instructed.

Bryan nodded absentmindedly, lifting his phone to dial Jerry’s number, then suddenly froze, eyes shifting to Landon in panic.

Back when the engagement was arranged, Landon made it very clear that the Sutton daughter he wanted Bryan to marry was Kelsie.

He had warned him sternly that under no condition was he to break the engagement.

This ultimatum was what irritated Bryan.

Not only were the Suttons practically bottom-feeders, but the girl he was meant to marry was a former hideous thing like Kelsie, not her gorgeous sister.

Now that he thought about it, maybe his grandfather had always known Kelsie would grow into a very beautiful woman.

But that wasn’t the issue. When he dissolved their engagement and got engaged to Laura, he never told his grandfather.

Sure, his father knew—but not Landon.

They had even warned the rest of the Baker family not to mention a word to him, and everyone strictly referred to Laura as ’the Sutton daughter’ whenever talks about the engagement came up.

If he called Jerry now, Landon would definitely find out what he’d been hiding for the past seven years...

"If you don’t know how to use your phone anymore, give it to Edward," Landon mummed, frowning and beckoning to his assistant when Bryan continued to stare blankly, making no move to dial the number.

Bryan swallowed and slowly put away his phone with a sigh.

"I ask again, why worry about things like this? Jerry Sutton doesn’t like to be rushed. And I already agreed with him that I’d marry his daughter early next year."

"You may not know this since you don’t live here, but he’ll feel pressured if you call him about the date."

"You want me to marry into the Sutton family no matter what and ever since his daughter became beautiful, he has grown quite prideful. I fear he’ll ask to dissolve the engagement if you call him now."

Landon said nothing for several seconds before huffing and lowering his eyes.

"That darn brat, always prancing around like he owns everything. If not for that lovely woman, he never would’ve known a thing about luxury until the end of his wretched life."

Though Bryan didn’t understand who the ’brat’ was, he was relieved to see Landon drop the subject.

"So, Grandfather, will you be leaving anytime soon? I’m just asking because I know how busy things get when you’re not around."

Landon raised his eyes and stared directly at him. "Yes, it used to be busy, but your cousin has learned quite a bit about running the company."

"He runs it so well, I don’t have to do anything anymore but relax and play golf. Headquarters have seen massive growth. They make nothing short of one hundred percent profit every month."

"Recently, it’s tripled. I fear he’s going to make us even wealthier if he becomes heir. So, I’ve decided to give him a shot at it."

What was meant to be a harmless question to put his mind at ease did the opposite.

Bryan panicked.

"G-Grandfather, you can’t do that! Remember, unlike him, I haven’t been by your side at all. Besides, he’s your brother’s illegitimate son. What will the shareholders say if they find out you’re considering him as heir?"

The man casually waved him aside.

"Oh, don’t worry about them. Those old men don’t care about the company. They only care about making money. If your cousin generates the most profit, they won’t care who’s at the helm."

"You, on the other hand, won’t do very well and will become easy prey for those vultures. Honestly, I don’t think you’ll do better. So I’m telling you now; stay back while your cousin runs the company. You’ll earn three times what you earn now."

Bryan didn’t know when he closed the distance between them, pleading, "Grandfather, please don’t do this. I’m really trying my best. If this is about marrying into the Sutton family later than you wanted, I’ll push the wedding forward to three months from now. I’ll wed Kelsie Sutton and..."

"I’m Laura Sutton, how dare you block me? Let me in right now, or I’ll have Bryan fire your sorry asses!"

Laura’s loud screaming echoed from outside the door at that very moment, cutting him off.

His bodyguards would have let her in, but today, the ones at the door were Landon’s bodyguards, and they naturally wouldn’t allow it.

Bryan recognized the voice and smiled nervously, breaking out in cold sweat.

But on second thought, he wiped the sweat off his forehead and reached for the telephone.

His plan was simple: call his grandfather’s security and instruct them to drag her out if she refused to leave.

She was his ’in-law’, after all. It didn’t matter how she was handled.

The call had just connected when Laura’s panicked voice broke through, trying to snatch the phone away from its owner.

"I know you’re in there, Bryan! Your father-in-law and mother-in-law has just been arrested by the police, and I need your help bailing them out!"

Bryan swallowed and glanced at Landon nervously from the corner of his eye.

Tightening his grip on the telephone, he put extra emphasis on the words coming out of his mouth, so much so that anyone listening would sense something was off and follow his lead.

"Don’t be ridiculous, Laura Sutton. If Kelsie hasn’t called me, you have no right to. Now go back home, my grandfather is here."

One, two, three... he exhaled in relief and leaned back when he heard nothing from her.

He had just taken it off his ear when Laura’s spiteful laughter filled the quiet room.

"You fool, you dissolved your engagement to her seven years ago! You’ve been engaged to me ever since!"
