Chapter 231 Jerry Sutton’s Downfall

Chapter 231: Chapter 231 Jerry Sutton’s Downfall

A plasma television lit up, displaying a recorded interview of Jerry Sutton with a reporter from Silicon Valley News.

"...it’s a thing of joy, really. Our daughter will be marrying into the Adler family soon. We wanted to keep this a secret until she made it public, but now that it’s slipped out, there’s no need to hide it anymore." He was all smiles as he looked into the camera.

The reporter returned his smile.

Leaning forward, she briefly glanced to her side before questioning, "Mr. Sutton, you keep talking about your daughter marrying into the Adler family, but we’ve come to know you have two daughters. Many people on the internet are already speculating about which one it is. Do you mind clarifying once and for all?"

Jerry shrugged and parted his lips. Instantly, the reporter’s eyes lit up.

But they fell the very next second when he laughed curtly and leaned back.

"That, I’ll unfortunately have to keep a secret until she tells you herself. For now, I hope you wish them luck!"

The television went off at that moment, and a fuming Jack Adler turned his attention to the three people seated in his office like they owned the place.

Jett, Daniel, Boyce, and Craig stood right behind him, watching intently as well.

However, unlike how they had behaved during Jack’s birthday party weeks ago, the Sutton family showed no signs of worry. They stared back, calm and composed.

After a while, Jett nudged his head toward Eric, who walked forward carrying a briefcase.

He placed it on the table, inputted a key, and it clicked open.

The trio watched with expectant eyes, nearly gasping at the sight of six gold bars on one side of the briefcase and a pile of cash on the other.

Eric suddenly closed it, causing them to frown.

Knowing they were ready to talk, Jack leaned forward. "I’ll give you this case and put everything behind us if you go back on air and tell them you were just rambling last night."

Jerry Sutton wasn’t a good businessman, but when money was involved, he would do whatever it took to either make the money his or squeeze out more from the person offering.

He aimed to do the latter with Jack Adler. So he pretended to be unimpressed by the offer and leaned back in his seat, eyes narrowing thoughtfully.

A moment later, he snorted, "You suddenly announce to the world that you have triplets in your family, but when I say my daughter is marrying into the Adler family, you find fault with it and even offer me money to shut me up? Don’t you feel ashamed of yourself?"

Jack wasn’t in the mood to trade words with this idiot.

So he signaled to another man, who brought over a second briefcase.

This time, when it was opened, there was a single document inside.

Jerry squinted his eyes, trying to read the words written on it from a distance when Jack filled him in, "I’m gifting you a villa I own, along with the other suitcase. Is that enough to get you to take back what you said?"

Realizing he could make more money than he had imagined, Jerry grew greedy and scoffed. "What? Do you think my daughter is some commodity I’ll let any man take? And don’t even get me started about my grandchildren!"

"You think the problem will go away if you throw money at it. Well, it might—but you’re going to have to do better than one villa, six gold bars, and some cash to get what you want."

"To really do as you’re asking, all I need in return is about one hundred gold bars, three briefcases of money, and at least three villas."

Deborah hummed, reaching out to hold his arm in support, "Given that we’re her family, this is not too much to ask. And if you really love our daughter, you’d be happy to pay even more."

Compared to her greedy parents, Laura was quiet. Not because she wasn’t as greedy as them, but because she was seething.

She still couldn’t believe Kelsie was really getting married into the Adler family.

All these years, she had chased after anyone and everyone she thought could take care of her.

She even clung to that bastard Bryan Baker just to spite Kelsie when all this time, Kelsie had managed to land someone like Jett Adler?

And now this—the entire Adler power circle was working together to protect her identity from being leaked to the press.

Hmph! That brat must be hiding something.

She was sure of it.

If they found out she had not one but three children for another man and didn’t even know who the father was—she bet they wouldn’t be this generous.

As she was thinking this, Jack suddenly smiled, catching all three of them off guard.

"What? Do you find our request too little and want to add more? As future in-laws, that would mean a lot to me." Although confused, Jerry couldn’t think of anything funny.

Since he had the upper-hand, they had no choice but to listen to him and meet his demands no matter how ridiculous they thought it was.

Otherwise...

He was distracted when Jett slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out a pen.

Deborah, who thought he was reaching for something else, exhaled in relief and relaxed, knowing they were really getting their way.

Jerry felt the same and quickly assumed the pen was for signing whatever needed signing to him.

Smiling smugly, he scratched his jaw and shrugged slightly, "I actually feel bad seeing how quickly you’re complying. Why don’t we do it this way?"

"You give me half of what I asked for, I tell the press everything I said was just a fluke. Once that’s done, you give me the rest, eh?"

The words had barely left his mouth when a soft click filled the room.

Nothing about the sound drew attention—until Jerry’s own voice started to play.

He sat up, glancing around in confusion as the conversation they just had filled the room.

"It’s the pen. It’s a pen recorder. I have everything we’ve said today on record." Jett clicked the pen again, calling his attention to it.

Jerry shifted his gaze to stare at it, no iota of fear on his face as he scoffed, "So what? You can’t do anything with that. If you give it to the press, they’ll find out Kelsie’s identity. You don’t want that to happen. Isn’t that why you called me here?"

Jett looked to the side, and Eric handed him a laptop.

Jerry watched him type silently.

A moment later, a snippet of the recording played—just a few sentences, but stitched together so seamlessly, Jerry genuinely started to panic when the only thing he heard was his voice.

To make it worse, when it was stitched together this way, it made him out to be a scheming criminal using his daughter to extort money from the wealthy family she was marrying into.

In addition, his mention of Kelsie’s name was nowhere. If such a recording got out...

"I know it sounds fun, but you do not want to get into a power struggle with the Adler family. Last time, our junior lawyers took your case. Imagine what your life will be like when our veterans do."

With a threat like that, Jerry didn’t bother hanging around and stormed out with his family.

This entire thing was a bust.

Inside the car, he hesitated a few minutes before calling that person.

After all, he had done the exact opposite of what they’d planned by trying to take what the Adler family offered.

But he hadn’t accepted it. And since it was a private meeting, that person probably didn’t know a thing.

With that in mind, he dialed the number.

The call ended almos immediately.

He frowned and was just about to dial it again when a police van pulled up beside them.

"Registration and license, please."

Deborah handed it to them.

A moment later, the officer appeared at the window, his hand resting on his holster.

"Carefully step out of the car and put your hands behind your back."

Though startled, the sight of the gun scared Jerry into complying, but it didn’t stop him from complaining once he got out.

"What, why? Officer, If it’s money you want, I’ll write you a check and leave my contact card with you. Right now, I’m in a hurry and can’t afford to stay here longer than—"

Slam!

He groaned painfully when the officer suddenly grabbed him and slammed him against the car, pulling out handcuffs.

"Jeremiah Sutton, you’re under arrest for possession of a stolen vehicle."

"What stolen vehicle? This was given to me by a good friend! The paperwork was delivered right to me, on my—" Jerry was yelling out in defense, but stopped mid-sentence, eyes bulging in realization.

The car... it was given to him by that person.
