Chapter 197: Chapter 197 Do Your Task Or I Fire You
In the lobby of Haven Medical Center, a flustered Holly stood with two male cops.
"Ma’am, how long has your friend been gone?"
"What does that matter?"
"Answering our questions will make this pretty easy for us. So, please, tell us how how long she’s been gone?"
"She’s been gone for over an hour and I’ve rung her line more than a dozen times. If the scary man who called earlier hasn’t harmed her, she has no reason not to answer her phone."
"I understand your worry, ma’am. Unfortunately, one has to go missing for twenty-four hours before they can be treated as a missing person."
"Excuse me, did you just say twenty-four hours? Who the hell sets these rules? I’m sure people who commits all sort of vile crimes all count on ridiculous rules like this to do heinous acts!
"Holly, get an ER ready." Was all Holly heard as someone strutted past her.
She recognized the voice and nodded perfunctorily, "Yes, Dr. Sutton."
Then she parted her lips to continue lashing out at the officers when she suddenly realized something and rushed toward the doctor.
Spurning her around, she couldn’t contain her excitement and embraced Kelsie tightly.
"Dr. Sutton! You’re alright. I’m relieved."
She disengaged seconds later and gritted her teeth in rage seeing the bruise on the side of her head.
"What happened to you face? Did that scary man do this to you? Say the word and those officers I called over will go arrest him for assault right now!"
"He-help me, please!" Someone groaned painfully behind thrm.
Only then did Holly notice more than twenty men limping after Kelsie.
"What is going on? Who are these people with you?"
Folding both arms under her bosom, Zoe scoffed lightly, "They got into an accident. Team leader just doesn’t know when not to help people."
Holly was slightly taken aback before she began snapping her fingers, trying to recall Zoe’s name.
"Aren’t you Zoe Derruci? The scary man called the hospital to say they’d send all ten of your fingers to Dr. Sutton because you owe them."
"Don’t tell me... those men are the men who threatened you? Did Dr. Sutton beat them up like that?"
The words had just rolled off her tongue when Kelsie turned.
"ER. Holly."
At this, she stopped talking and scurried away.
Zoe also turned to leave when Kelsie called out to her.
"Which one of them did that to your face?"
Recalling her face was also a mess, Zoe gently felt the bruises with her fingers, an embarrassed smile on her face.
"When they told me I was suddenly owing them. I panicked and made a run for it. But I lost my footing and fell. On my face."
Kelsie nodded in understanding.
"You may have an infection. So don’t leave until you’ve done some blood work."
Zoe’s embarrassed smile deepened. "I have no money."
"You two stop talking and take me to the darn ER before I bleed to death!" An exasperated Aaron Patel didn’t know when he lashed out at both women.
Kelsie and Zoe turned to stare at him blankly.
Quickly realizing his mistake, he slowly sat up and smiled forcefully. "I mean, I’m dying here. Please take care of me before I die. Please."
Kelsie briefly regarded him before she turned her attention to Zoe again.
"Congratulations, Zoe. Mr. Patel here has volunteered to take care of your medical expenses."
"That’s the least he can do for dragging an innocent person into something which has nothing to do with them."
Aaron didn’t dare refuse and hurriedly agreed.
"Yes, I’d do that. In fact, I’ll cover the bills for anything she has to do in the hospital starting today."
Kelsie smiled in amusement then headed to her office without another word.
A moment later, an intern came by to do the blood work.
Inside her office, Kelsie took out her phone to call her aunt.
But all three calls went unanswered, so she dropped a voicemail instead.
An hour later, a knock sounded on her door and the intern who drew the blood work came in looking nervous.
"Doctor, I made a mistake in the blood work. I didn’t ask what tests you needed me to run and did a DNA test. Please forgive me. I’ll be more careful next time."
Ten seconds later and Kelsie didn’t budge.
After a while, she finally raised her eyes to meet the intern’s, "Is that really why you did it?"
The intern grimaced and quickly lowered her eyes to the floor in apology.
"All day, I’ve been thinking of the new DNA isolating machine the hospital got. Some interns had the opportunity to use it today and actually got the DNA result in an hour. I wanted to try it too... I’m sorry."
"Does it really work? The least number of days the lab spends extracting, analyzing and comparing is three days. I find it rather ambiguous the machine produces a result in one hour." Kelsie sighed as she got on her feet.
Then she took the results from her.
She was about to toss them into the bins when something caught her attention.
"What? These two are related?"
Her eyes flew to the names on the results and she didn’t know when she laughed.
When she walked outside, Aaron and his men were still around.
Aaron was rather nervous seeing the papers in her hand.
"Do we have any infection?"
She shook her head, "Something happened and we’ll need more of your blood works."
"Oh, okay." Without question, he rolled up his sleeves for the intern again.
As she took his blood sample, Aaron leaned toward Zoe a little to balance properly and she glared hard at him.
"Stop touching me."
"I’m not touching you."
"Of course you are. Your clothes are touching me."
"I can’t control that."
"You can by taking it off."
"Stop being so hostile when you’ve totally shattered my nose. If anyone should be upset, it’s me."
"What right do you have to be upset over what happened when you were hired to... forget it. I ought to break your nose some more!"
"What a violent woman. Where the hell do you even come from?"
"A better place than you!"
Watching them bicker like this, Kelsie clicked her tongue and couldn’t help nodding in agreement, "You bicker like my children. Indeed, you’re really siblings."
"How can i... who’s really siblings?" Aaron was about to retort to Zoe when he heard Kelsie.
Kelsie waved the results at him.
"The intern made a mistake. She used your first blood work for a DNA test and what are the odds that she tested you two against each other?"
The mere thought of being Aaron’s sibling ticked off Zoe as she quickly refuted, "Whatever you’re about to say, I assure you you’re wrong! I’m an only child."
"Same." Aaron scoffed.
Kelsie simply threw their results on them then turned to the intern.
"Draw a bit more blood from these two for a second DNA test. Tell those at the lab not to use the machines."
"Yes, doctor."
Aaron briefly read the words on the result before he crumpled the paper and sneered, "We have the same parents? I’m sure it’s a mistake. If we had the same parents we would’ve grown up together."
Zoe did the same and huffed, "And look at me, Dr. Sutton. I’m really good-looking, this man, however, isn’t. Genetic can’t be that merciless, can it?"
There was a momentary silence before Aaron realized he was being made fun of.
"You’re the one who isn’t good looking. Back in high school, every girl wanted me."
"That’s what happens when people have no taste." Zoe hissed.
Kelsie’s eyes flickered between the two, the corners of her lips curling up in amusement as she watched them.
Then she took a few steps backward, attempting to lean on the wall behind her when she stepped on someone.
"My apologies..." She paused eyes widening in slight surprise when they met Kelvin Reynolds’, "Sir?"
"Let’s talk as we walk." Kelvin barely spared her a glance before he led the way.
"Yes, sir." Kelsie mummed and followed after him.
Briefly glancing at her, he began, "I’ve been made aware you’re acquainted with Serbian Howard."
Kelsie nodded. "A little."
"Do you also know he has a very life threatening illness?"
"I do."
"Do you also know you’re the doctor he put in charge of himself?"
"I didn’t know that."
"Mhm. In the document I have, it says he wants you to be the only one who operates on him."
"I see."
He scoffed and stopped walking.
Naturally, she did the same.
"No, you don’t, Dr. Sutton. He wants you to operate on him, but he has refused to have the surgery. Which is why I’m here today."
"His father tells me they’ve spoken to him numerous times to have the surgery all to no avail."
"It seems he really intends to die. But I can’t let that happen. You see, Haven Medical Center has been able to preserve its database and keep it hacker-proof all these years thanks to him."
"If something happens to him, the database’s security will be compromised. And frankly speaking, I don’t think there’ll be anyone as good as him to take care of it if he’s gone. But even if they’re as good, I won’t be able to trust them like I trust him."
Kelsie didn’t know if to be happy with this information. Happy that the database’s security would be weaker if...
She paused and internally sighed.
No, it’s too much of a gross thing to be happy about.
Kelvin was quick to notice the thoughtful look in her eyes and frowned hard.
"Are you listening to me, Dr. Sutton?"
She snapped back to her present with a nod, "Yes, sir."
Kelvin had no idea she was a good hacker. Hence, her momentary zoning out didn’t matter ring any bells in him.
So he continued.
"His death will devastate our hospital in many ways, which is why as his doctor, I’m tasking you to get him to change his mind and have the surgery. You either do that or I fire you."
