Chapter 182 Peer Review For Karen Kunstler

Chapter 182: Chapter 182 Peer Review For Karen Kunstler

The following morning, Kelsie had just stepped into the building when she was called in for a peer review.

Kelvin Reynolds and some senior doctors waited for her on the podium.

As she walked toward them, her eyes naturally fell on the middle-aged man seated at the front, gnashing his teeth like some wild animal barely holding it together.

The mommy she climbed onto the podium, Kelvin Reynolds directly started the review.

"On November 19th, 9pm, a 19-year-old girl sauntered into the hospital asking for Dr. Kelsie Sutton."

"Despite being told the doctor was about to get off work by the nurses on night shift, she insisted. She even offered to pay more instead of being referred to another doctor."

He then paused and turned to face her squarely, "Doctor Sutton, remind us again, what exactly is this surgery Karen Kunstler wanted you to perform on her so late at night that you couldn’t wait to get permission from her guardians?"

Instantly, dozens of eyes darted toward her, including the trembling eyes of the man in front.

Kelsie finally realized who he was.

Nonetheless, she met Kelvin’s probing eyes as she responded, "She wanted a pregnancy termination."

The corners of his lips instantly curled into a disappointed smile, "So you terminated the pregnancy of 19-year-old without the consent of her guardian?"

"Under our country’s law, she’s an adult who can make decisions for herself. So I didn’t..." Kelsie was naturally resounding when...

Bang!

A teacup suddenly flew toward her, missing by inches and shattering to pieces against the wall behind her.

Thankfully, she was far from the wall. Hence, no piece made its way into her body.

As if throwing the teacup at her wasn’t enough, the middle-aged man couldn’t sit still any longer and got on his feet, rushing towards her.

He had just stretched both hands to grab her by the neck when security caught up and quickly held him down.

As they pulled him away from her, he kicked his foot in the air angrily, lashing out at her with his reddened eyes.

"What did you just say? My baby girl is only 19, how could she decide such for herself? If it were your daughter, would you be fine with it if a doctor performs such an operation on her without your consent?"

Kelvin Reynolds casually slid both hands into his pockets, internally watching the scene with relish.

But knowing he had a front to maintain, he sighed in exasperation and began chastising the man.

"Please, Mr. Kunstler, we can only discipline this doctor you reported if you remain seated and keep your emotions under control."

At this, the hot-headed man leered at him, "Look at her standing there without remorse. Doesn’t this hospital have the best doctors? How could you keep someone like her as your staff! You should all be ashamed of yourself!"

Kelvin’s brows knitted into a frown.

"I know I’d react the same way if she was my daughter, but I and everyone else in this room will really appreciate it if you no longer have any outbursts."

"As much as it pains me to say, if you have another outburst, the security behind you will directly drag you out."

"I trust there will be no need for that as you’ll keep calm until we see if this doctor really did the wrong thing, not so?"

Christopher Kunstler bit down on his lower lip, eyes not leaving Kelsie’s unbothered face as he begrudgingly nodded.

As the room fell silent again, Kelsie unhurriedly spoke up.

"I apologize for not consulting the patient’s parents before performing the surgery, but the situation called for it."

Kelvin held in his sneer, keeping his tone natural as he scoffed, "The patient almost died on that table. If that had happened, it’d be way bigger than this, Dr. Sutton."

"Instead of justifying your actions, don’t you think you should be apologizing to Mr. Kunstler instead?"

"Not at all, sir." Kelsie calmly refuted, then picked up the projector’s controller to turn it on.

Displayed on it was a surgical situation everyone in attendane instantly found familiar, except Christopher Kunstler.

Even Kelvin’s eyes narrowed slightly.

At this, Christopher moved uncomfortably in his seat and snorted, "What is this? More bullshit to back up your reason for almost killing my daughter?"

Pointing at the projector, Kelsie turned her eyes to him, "She was like this when I put her on that table. Your daughter already performed the fetus removal surgery somewhere else, but there happened to be complications with it."

"Had I turned her away or waited to reach a parent before performing the surgery, your daughter would be in a freezer in the hospital’s morgue right now."

Christopher swallowed nervously, squinting his eyes at the screen before he shifted his gaze to Kelvin.

"Is she saying the truth?"

A disappointed Kelvin forced on a smile as he nodded.

Just like that, a mistake-worthy reason to kick her out of the hospital slid right out of his fingers.

"Dr. Sutton is right. If she had delayed, our hospital would’ve had the death of your daughter on our hands."

"I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m glad she acted when she did. And you should be thanking her instead of berating her."

Christopher glanced at her again, a stubborn look in his eyes as he looked away.

Realizing this matter was far from being settled, Kelvin gently tugged his tie and began speaking to Kelsie again.

"But that aside, you should also apologize to Mr. Kunstler. You may have saved her life, but imagine the lawsuit the hospital would’ve had in their hands had things gone wrong in the operating room."

He expected her to argue a little, but to his surprise, she strutted forward, stopped a few inches away from Christopher and bowed slightly.

"I apologize for making you worry."

Christopher was rendered speechless.

The entire time, he screamed and cussed her out, but as soon as she was told to apologize, she immediately did?

A guilty sigh escaped his lips, his voice softening as he gently waved her off.

"What are you apologizing for? Because of your quick thinking my daughter gets to celebrate her 20th birthday. Thank you, doctor."

Meeting his eyes, Kelsie smiled faintly, "Actually, it was hard not to do my job when your daughter offered to pay four times the usual amount if I operated on her."

"That little runt, always throwing money at her problems. It’s a good thing she threw it at the right person this time." Christopher feigned annoyance for a moment before he laughed heartily.

"To be honest, I feel bad for trying to hit you just now. To make up for it, why don’t you make it to my bakery? I’m opening a branch close to the hospital in a week’s time."

As he spoke, he took out his contact card and handed it to her.

She took it, parting her lips to say something when he playfully shushed her.

"Please make it."

Slipping the card into her bag, she chuckled softly, "My little girl loves pastries. Of course I’ll make it. I was just going to ask if you pack to go."

"Usually, no, but for you, definitely."

Seeing the two suddenly hitting off, Kelvin almost threw up blood in anger.

But it was at this moment that the door to the room was suddenly pushed opened and Holly’s head popped in excitedly.

"Dr. Sutton, Karen Kunstler is awake!"

That was enough to end the meeting.

Kelsie hurried out with Christopher.

As soon as Karen Kunstler laid on eyes on her father, tears pricked the corners of her eyes.

"Daddy!"

Seeing his daughters teary-eyes, Christoper stood at the door, trying to fight off the tears threatening to fall.

"Were you scared i’d get angry at you for getting pregnant? Is that why you didn’t tell me?"

"Daddy..." Big balls of tears freely rolled down her cheeks as she parted her lips to say something.

He hurried towards her, gently holding her hand as he hushed her softly, "It’s fine. Save your strength by not saying anything. I’ll scold you later when you recover."

Karen sniffled.

"I didn’t... get an abortion. I only found out I was pregnant and I was going to tell Caleb. But then I tripped on the stairs and fell on my stomach."

"Then I miscarried. I didn’t want to trouble you with such news, so I went to this doctor by the roadside to treat me so I don’t bleed to death..."

She was still speaking when Christopher hugged her tightly, cooing, "Shush...it’s fine. You can tell me later. I know my daughter isn’t wayward. You wouldn’t be stupid enough to make two mistakes in a row."

After bonding with her for several minutes, he left to get her food.

Kelsie then did her job, checking to see if she had everything she needed before turning around to leave, but Karen’s weak hand suddenly gripped onto hers, thanking her weakly, "Thank you, Dr. Sutton."

Kelsie flashed her a warm smile, "You’re welcome."

Only then did Karen let go of her.

As Kelsie turned to leave again, Karen continued speaking, "When my belly started to ache, I thought it was normal and planned to drink dry gin in a bar until I felt better."

"I’m glad the man who suggested to go to you came when he did. Otherwise..."

Kelsie instantly halted, spurning around in surprise.

"A man suggested you come to me?"

Karen nodded innocently, a thoughtful look in her eyes as she retorted, "Yes, he said he was a patient of yours and sang you praises."

"Now that I think of it, he was just being modest and didn’t want to seem imposing."

"What do you mean?" Kelsie was perplexed.

But that only worsened when she heard Karen’s response.

"You look a lot like him. I can’t help thinking he’s one of your relatives who didn’t want to sound like a braggart when he recommended you to me."
