Chapter 181: Chapter 181 I Came To Settle This, Woman To Woman
The wind had died down, and the curtain once again blocked the glow of the moonlight, leaving her unable to see Kelsie.
But Charlotte remembered where she had seen her and kept her eyes fixed on that spot, asking in a shaky voice, "How did you get into my house?"
A subtle rhythmic sound, which Charlotte soon realized was Kelsie drumming her fingers against something, filled the quiet air.
Shortly after, she calmly mused, "That? I found the front door open. That expensive electronic lock you have just gave way when I touched it."
"That’s impossible! I spent so much on it and they assured me it wouldn’t..." Charlotte temporarily forgot herself and was lashing out when Kelsie laughed, interrupting and bringing her back to her senses.
"Exactly! I knew It was expensive. And so is this house you’re living in. The artworks on your wall, the clothes in your wardrobe."
"Don’t even get me started on the expensive wines you have. I almost thought this was a wine factory."
"You also live in an estate. I know teachers make a lot, but not enough to afford a place like this when they only have one job."
Charlotte tensed, her eyes frantically darting around the room in fear, but she maintained a stoic voice as she scoffed, "Ms. Sutton, you have absolutely no right coming into my home like this!"
Kelsie ignored her and continued speaking.
Though Charlotte couldn’t see her, the fluctuating tone of Kelsie’s voice made her realize she was looking around.
"Ms. Hastings, how did a teacher on a fixed monthly salary like yours afford all of these? If I’m right, which I know I am, this apartment costs a lot, it’s in an estate after all."
"I also know you have only one job and your family isn’t wealthy either. You don’t sleep around too. I’m really curious, what could it be?"
She then paused and gasped dramatically.
"Wait, don’t tell me... don’t tell me you were able to get all these out of pilfering from the innocent children you teach."
The room was dark enough for Kellsie not to see the look on Charlotte’s face. But hearing her suddenly ragged and heavy breathing, she knew she had made the right deduction.
This piece of trash.
"You–! Did you run a background check on me? How dare you run a background check on me and even go as far as breaking into my house?" Charlotte was livid hearing Kelsie make the right deduction, so instead of continuing the discussion, she feigned annoyance and lashed out.
Kelsie sneered. "If you didn’t want that, why then did you target my daughter?"
At this, Charlotte chortled angrily, "Target your daughter? Don’t make me laugh! That bottle you saw, I saw it after school when your daughter dropped it off."
"I merely brought it with me so I can take it back to the owner tomorrow. How dare you accuse me of theft after teaching your daughter wrongly!"
Her words had just fallen when the television in front of her turned on and a video came up.
Her eyes instantly dilated.
It was a live footage of the estate. At exactly 4pm yesterday, she walked into the estate flaunting the bottle in front of some of her neighbors.
Though the video was muted, anyone could tell by her body language she was proudly showing off the bottle as her own.
Taking her eyes off the television, she shifted her gaze to Kelsie, who was sitting comfortably at her vanity table.
Her eyes quickly searched Kelsie’s body, her tense body relaxing after confirming she wasn’t wielding any weapon.
As long as Kelsie had come to find her with nothing, but hostility and righteous indignation, she felt she could fight her off if push came to shove.
Hence, she began speaking carelessly.
"So? What can you proof with this? Not only did you get this footage illegally, it also has no sound, so you can’t prove anything."
"I mean, sure, you can deduce what you think happened, but no judge in his right senses will side with you."
When she was done speaking, she watched Kelsie, waiting for the look of defeat to appear, but it never came.
Instead, Kelsie got on her feet and reached for her bag.
Charlotte watched closely as she took out some black gloves from it, but it was no murder weapon so she wasn’t worried.
"Why are you taking out gloves all of a sudden? Are you cold?"
Kelsie didn’t put them on and merely turned to look at her, a faint smile hovering across her face, "Ms. Hastings, I fear you’ve got me wrong. I hate the law, but I know very well how it works."
"Which is why I never intended to take you to court. It may not look like it, but I’ve come to settle this woman to woman with you."
The words were yet out of Kelsie’s mouth when Charlotte exhaled in relief.
Woman to woman?
Looking at Kelsie’s frail figure, she almost laughed.
With a body like that, all she had to do was push her a little and she’d be struggling to get off the floor!
This darn woman... she looks and sounds smart when in reality she’s actually so dumb.
Her eyes suddenly flashed coldly, if she just happened to kill Kelsie in her house, she could always say it was self-defense.
Thinking like this, she grew presumptuous and got out of bed.
"It’s good to know you’re a reasonable woman. If you apologize and get the hell out of my house right now, then for the sake of your children, I won’t hold it against you by reporting you for breaking into my house."
Striding towards her, Kelsie laughed.
"How cute."
Although taken aback, Charlotte sneered and grabbed hold of the lamp stand, intending to hit Kelsie with it, but it kicked away just before she could swing it.
She froze, slightly startled by Kelsie’s quick reflex and agility, before she quickly bent over to take it.
"Arghhh!" A shrill scream escaped her lungs almost immediately as Kelsie reached over and gripped her tightly by the hair.
Quickly stuffing one of the gloves into her mouth to stiffle her scream, Kelsie then pulled her up and tossed her to the ground again.
Once on the floor, Charlotte took out the glove and glared hard at Kelsie.
At the same time, she shuddered in fear.
That strength... was that really the strength of a woman? And a frail woman at that?
Ignoring the fear in her eyes, Kelsie bent toward her, grabbed her by the collar, and pulled her close.
"I don’t care if you steal from the children. But I do care when you steal and pin it on my daughter. On any of my children. Didn’t I make it clear at the parking lot the other day that I don’t play about my children?"
In response, Charlotte glowered at her defiantly, "Woman, you’re not crazy enough to touch me."
Kelsie smiled coldly, gently caressing her face, drawing imaginary lines with her fingers.
This further convinced Charlotte she was right and she grew bolder.
"You will never touch me. Not when I can call the estate security as soon as you step out of this room."
A moment later, Kelsie nodded in agreement.
"The other day at the parking lot, you sounded like you’ve dealt with a lot of single mothers."
"As such, I expected you to know better than to lay your filthy hands on the daughter of a single mother."
Charlotte glared hard at her.
"I didn’t lay my hands on her. I just scared her a little. Why are you making such a big fuss about it?"
Kelsie raised a questioning brow, "Do you not know?"
Charlotte gritted her teeth, "Know what? How would I know anything going on in that warped mind of yours?"
Kelsie thinned her lips, "A single-mother is criticized for raising her children without a father."
"You see, most single mothers are single by choice, while others just happened to be with irresponsible men and bore the consequence."
"But society makes it so hard for them to get by. So majority let’s the pressure get to them, while the rest, the crazy ones, crush anyone and any obstacle that gets in their way."
Charlotte felt her ears, snapping impatiently, "So? What does that have to do with me? I’m not the one who told either of you to become single mothers when you know very well how society thinks of them."
"If you assault me. Do you think I’ll let you off? This will become bigger than the case of a stolen water bottle. And do you think anyone will believe I stole the bottle?"
"I’ve been a teacher at that school for five years. The parents love me, so it’s no news they gift me occasionally for doing a good job. This house... I got it from working and saving every penny I got."
"If you assault me, I will have you arrested and thrown in prison tomorrow morning. So before you do anything to me, you better be prepared to kill me."
Kelsie immediately went silent, taking her hand off Charlotte to scratch her suddenly itchy head.
Mistaking this for fear, Charlotte’s lips twitched in contempt.
"Just like I thought. Just take this as if nothing happened. That boyfriend of yours already made such a huge show by buying 36 of this same bottles for your daughter’s classmates."
"So be a good mother and leave now, because if you touch me, you better be prepared to kill me as I won’t let you off."
Kelsie slowly straightened up and headed for the door, "Is that so? It’s a good thing I have a body bag in my car."
