Chapter 174: Chapter 174 Emergency! Emergency!

A moment later, Jack shifted uncomfortably in his seat, flashing Daniel a grim smile.

"You seem to know Dr. Sutton on a personal level. What, you’ve known her for six months? I didn’t know there’s a woman you’ve known for that long."

Daniel felt the stubbles on his chin, his lips twitching slightly as he frantically thought of a lie.

There was no way he’d say he knew her because she had children with Jett. The last time he checked, Jett didn’t even know he had children.

Not only did that seem impossible to everyone, that would convince his grandfather he was hiding something.

The last thing he wanted was for his relationship with his future sister-in-law to be misunderstood.

As he struggled for what to say, but came up empty, Kelsie suddenly spoke up for him.

"Your grandson and I met a few months back in front of an amusement park. He said he found my..."

Thinking she was about to mention her children, Daniel interrupted her by laughing loudly.

"I found her cute. In case you haven’t noticed, grandfather, Ms. Sutton has a very beautiful face."

"And her smile, it’s ethereal. I was instantly dumbstruck the first time I saw her in front of an amusement park. I thought it was only right she knew how illegal it was to be so attractive."

Listening to his nervous rambling, Kelsie mentally face-palmed herself.

She could tell he was making an effort to hide something.

To hide something?

It took a moment before her pupils dilated in disbelief.

He was hiding something!

That’s right. He was the man who came into her apartment months ago rambling about Jesse looking a lot like his brother.

Back then, she treated his words as the rambling of a mad man and made her children wear masks in public since she couldn’t risk a stranger saying her son looked like Jett Adler.

She completely forgot about him.

As she reeled in realization, Kelvin furrowed his brows in astonishment and Jack’s eyes darkened.

He was right. So his two grandson, both brothers, were in-love with the same woman.

Not that he could call it love for Jett, but given how he begged him to set up another blind date he must’ve seen her around the hospital and thought it wise to give it a try.

Whatever triggered his decision, this was Jett’s first time taking initiative when it concerned a woman.

And he never took initiative over anything if he wasn’t going to see it to the end.

He had naturally concluded this date would lead to a wedding and was going to start preparing for a wedding once Daniel left.

But now...

He inhaled sharply, eyes darting between Kelsie and Daniel, "Is that so?"

Kelsie grimaced and forced on a smile, cussing out Daniel in her mind.

But at the moment, all she could do was smile and nod in agreement.

"I was so surprised to know he crossed the road just to tell me that. He, uh, was really charming."

Without realizing it, Jack snorted with laughter, almost giving up on the idea of her and Jett together seeing the sweet smile accompanying her words.

"Charming? Indeed! He might spend all day with his face buried in a screen, but when he wants to be, he can be quite charming. So, you’ve seen that side of him?"

Once again, Kelsie had no choice than to nod.

At this, he bobbed his head slightly, "He must find you special if he looked away from his screen just to look at you."

Jack was smiling so much Daniel realized he was misinterpreting the whole thing and hurriedly clarified, "Grandfather, it’s nothing of that sort! I just admire Ms. Sutton."

"Yes, we’re just acquaintances. Not even close enough to be called friends." Kelsie didn’t forget to chime in, demonstrating how close they were by widening her fingers.

"Not that close? I’d say we’re closer than that." Daniel murmured incoherently, gently tugging his ears.

Jack went mum again.

Seizing the brief silence, Kelvin, who had been waiting for the right time to speak up again, voiced out, "I hope this won’t be an inconvenience to you, but we think it’s best to withdraw Dr. Sutton as your doctor."

Jack was a little distracted as he questioned, "Have you asked Dr. Sutton if what that woman wrote is the truth?"

Kelvin laughed awkwardly, "What is there to ask? Maria Santos would never report on what she isn’t sure about."

"Even if she did make a mistake, it’s only right to hold back Dr. Sutton for a few weeks so her behavior won’t backfire on you and the hospital."

Jack turned to stare at him blankly, "If I’m right, which I know I am, this matter concerns one doctor and not the doctorl."

"We should let Dr. Sutton take care of it. After all, it’s her mess. It’s only right that she cleans it up. Or don’t you think so?"

Kelvin and Calvin’s face fell and Kelsie’s eyes clouded over.

What is this?

For people who cared so much about the hospital’s reputation, they sure didn’t look happy that she was going to speak to the public.

Undergoing an internal evaluation by the hospital wasn’t enough to keep people from wagging their tongues against her.

It was the only way to put an end to whatever this was once and for all. As people who didn’t want the hospital to be caught in the cross-fire, she expected them to agree immediately.

While Kelvin masked his anger over the refusal with a small smile, Calvin couldn’t bring himself to do the same and outrightly glare at her.

It took Kelsie some seconds before she chuckled softly in realization.

These obnoxious brothers.

Restricting her access to the database wasn’t enough, they now wanted her out of the hospital.

Seeing how they were going to such lengths to get rid of her, they must’ve caught on.

And seeing how they were trying to keep her out of the database, they must’ve really done something cruel to her mother.

Something only a doctor would see at first glance.

"Dr. Sutton, do you not want to do it? Perhaps, it’d be better for an internal evaluation to be conducted on you?" When she didn’t respond after several seconds, Jack called out to her again.

She snapped back to the present, shaking her head in refusal.

"I’ll only be admitting to something I didn’t do if I go through the evaluation."

Jack nodded in affirmation. "That is true. So what is it you’re suggesting?"

"Speaking to a few people won’t do the trick." Kelsie began, briefly glancing at Kelvin and Calvin before she continued.

"Maria Santos put my integrity and reputation on the line when she mentioned me as a homophobe. So I’ll like to invite her to a talk show."

The words were yet out of her mouth when Kelvin sneered, "And why would you do that? It’ll only make more people interested in the matter."

Kelsie flashed him a reassuring smile.

"I understand your concern, Mr. Reynolds, but you have nothing to worry about. I’m not a homophobe nor am I gay."

"Maria Santos seems to have such an interesting perspective on me though we’ve never met before which makes me curious as to where she got such information from."

"But if she doesn’t agree to the talk show, I’ll just sue her for defamation. The lawsuit won’t affect the hospital in any way. I promise."

Jack, who already had no doubt she’d handle the situation splendidly, flicked his gaze towards Kelvin.

"There we have it! There’s absolutely no need to withdraw such a talented doctor and get the hospital involved in something so messy."

Insisting would only make him out to have an ulterior motive, so Kelvin gave up and accepted the situation.

"I guess you’re right, sir. As long as the lawsuit doesn’t affect the hospital in anyway, Dr. Sutton can do as she likes."

He stopped talking and directed his stern gaze to her, "To avoid issues like this, it’d help if you don’t bring your personal life into the hospital."

Without another word, he turned his attention to Jack again, lowering his head in a bow.

"Thank you for your help in this matter, sir. I’ll be taking my leave now. Have a nice day."

Then he turned around and left with his entourage.

As the last of his entourage closed the door behind him, Daniel crossed his leg on the other, squinting his eyes thoughtfully.

"Is it just me or does it seem like he has it out for you... for you, Dr. Sutton?" He was speaking to her casually again, but quickly stopped and corrected himself, reverting to a formal tone again.

Jack remained silent.

Taking this as his cue, Daniel got on his feet, walking to the other side of the room to boil water for tea.

Kelsie stepped towards Jack to do what she came for.

When she was done, she took a step backward and smiled.

"You do look better than before. Did you get enough sleep like I suggested?"

"Of course. If I want to live longer, I have to do what my doctor suggests."

"That is good. If you feel any discomfort anywhere, promptly inform me."

Jack dipped his head in acknowledgment, eyes shuttling between her and Daniel for some seconds.

As Kelsie turned around to leave, he calmly called her back.

"My grandson was busy the other day, but he wishes to apologize for not showing up, so he’s begged me to arrange another blind date between you two. I plead with you to make it."

Daniel, who was just on his way to them with two porcelain cups, felt his hand tremble for a moment.

Jack watched him intently from the corners of his eyes as he continued speaking.

"He’s obstinate you and it was wrong of him to stand you up the other day. But if you go this one time, and he isn’t there, I’ll never ask you to do anything like this ever again."

Like a jealous man would, Daniel choked on his saliva, hastily setting the cups on the cushion in front of him.

Rubbing his chest in circular motion, he turne to leave as he said, "Grandfather, excuse me for a moment. Nature calls."

He dashed into the bathroom, quickly pulling out his phone, his fingers darting across the screen as he sent a series of messages to the group chat.

"Emergency! Emergency!"

"Sister-in-law is going on a blind date with one of my cousins."

"How to crash a blind date, anyone?!"
