Chapter 164: Chapter 164 Jack Adler’s Gift

He was the hospital’s biggest shareholder. So Kelsie wasn’t surprised, but still felt the need to confirm , "Jack Adler? Like the founder of Adler Group and Jett Adler’s grandfather?"

Holly turned the computer towards Kelsie as she nodded in agreement, "The one and only."

Suddenly, she glanced at Kelsie, narrowing her eyes in confusion.

"Now that I think of it, it’s strange. Doctors who undergo disciplinary hearings don’t get such important patients given to them so quickly. How much more the most important man in our hospital."

"But then, didn’t the hospital director find you himself? It’s clear you have a special place in his heart and he probably wants to make up for the embarrassment the disciplinary hearing caused you. Yes, that’s probably why. I can’t think of any other reason." f.r(e)e\webn.ovel.co\m

"Probably." Though she said that, Kelsie already knew why the moment she saw Jack’\ result.

Looking at it, she could see he was a very sick man.

Because his genotype was SS, health problems sprang up one after the other. So his ward upstairs was basically his second home.

Though he was so important and it’d be an honor to look after him, no one wanted the job because of the risk it came with.

Someone that sick could suddenly collapse and stop breathing after being given the right dosage of an injection.

Now that he knew Jett wa behind her, Kelvin Reynolds probably concluded this was the best way to get rid of her.

If anything happened to Jack while under her care, Jett would not only make life miserable for her, he would also throw her to the wolves.

Kelvin wasn’t very smart, but his underhanded methods were quite creative. Very impressive. No wonder such a predictive man managed to get the best of Lois Fletcher.

The telephone on the table rang at this moment. As soon as Holly heard the voice on the other end, she conveyed the words to Kelsie.

"It’s Mr. Adler on the line. He’s having a severe migraine and needs your immediate attention."

Kelsie didn’t say anything and simply turned to leave, but Holly held her back, speaking up a second later after the call ended.

"You have to be very careful with him. One wrong move and he could wind up dead."

Kelsie stared at her blankly. "I know that. I looked at his medical report just now."

Holly blinked nervously, "Also, I don’t know how close you are to Jett Adler, but he adores his grandfather."

"If you’re not careful with him, I doubt whatever you two have going on will still hold. Ignore that. It will definitely end."

Kelsie’s cheeks stretched into a small smile seeing her quivering lips.

"Holly, the longer you keep me here, the closer the man in question gets to meeting his creator. When that happens, everything you’re so afraid of will happen to me."

"What? Yes, of course. Just be careful and triple check before you give your diagnosis." Holly swallowed, anxiously biting down on her lower lip as she withdrew her hand.

As Kelsie walked towards an elevator, Holly exhaled shakily and lowered her eyes to the computer, murmuring underneath her breath, "The last person who gave him the wrong injection has been missing ever since."

Inside the elevator, Kelsie’s phone buzzed in her pocket and she took it out to silence the alarm then dialed Callum’s number.

She called twice before the man answered on the third ring.

"Ms. Sutton, we’re almost done with this batch. I’ll personally bring it to you next week."

"That is good to know. Thank you for the hard work. I’m hanging up now. I have a patient to see."

Three minutes later, she was walking into a ward on the last floor.

Once he heard the door open, Jack Adler slowly sat on his bed, complaining, "Doctor, you’re here. I’m having this severe migraine."

"Let me take a look at your eyes." Kelsie said, taking out her penlight.

However, the elderly man who sat up with his back to her, recognized her voice at once!

But he didn’t glance behind him and patiently waited for her to stand before him.

Kelsie didn’t recognize him at first and just concentrated on checking his vitals when the man suddenly gripped her hand.

"It’s you, isn’t it?"

Thinking he was asking if she was his previous doctor, she shook her head in refusal.

"Not at all. The hospital informed me your doctor can’t look after you at the moment. So until he returns, if he will, you’ll have to deal with me."

"But if you’re not comfortable having me as your doctor, you can always request for a different doctor."

But the elderly man didn’t seem to hear a word she was saying.

His eyes, twinkling like a child’s whose long-time wish had just been granted, fell on her badge.

However, Kelsie was too focused on him to pay attention to this excitement.

"When was the last time you slept?"

By this time, the man was smiling broadly, his migraine temporarily disappearing as he took in her appearance.

After a while; he leaned back a little and exhaled in satisfaction.

Even if she was a farmer, he would still think she was perfect for Jett.

Someone who paid no attention to the words of strangers and saved his life despite him being a stranger was someone he deemed fit to join the Adler family.

Furthermore, unlike the woman that brat grandson of his was courting, this well-mannered young lady had no children.

When she didn’t hear a response, she lowered her eyes to look at him, slightly stunned when she saw the bright smile on his face.

"Mr. Adler, is anything the matter?"

He promptly snapped out of his thought and cleared his throat noisily, "I was watching this basketball game throughout the night and didn’t realize it was morning."

"You see, I can’t bring myself to fall asleep once it’s morning. That’s how this old man’s body has been right from time."

Kelsie smiled in understanding, but still reprimanded, "You already have so many health issues, Mr. Adler and you’re taking a lot of meds. For those meds to work, you need to be properly rested at all times."

"The next time a basketball game you want to watch comes on, I’ll have someone find a way to save it so you can watch it during the day."

"Staying awake for that long especially for someone with health issues like yours isn’t ideal."

The man chuckled proudly.

"Okay, Dr. Sutton. Dr. Kelsie Sutton."

Kelsie gently waved him aside.

"I’ll have someone bring you something for the migraine and some sleeping pills."

Then she turned around to leave, but the man stopped her.

"Doctor?"

"Yes, do you need anything else?"

"Do you not remember me?"

Kelsie tilted her head in surprise, walking to stand in front of him again.

Ten seconds later, her eyes widened in realization.

"You’re the old man who almost drowned five months ago."

"Excellent! You have excellent memory, Dr. Sutton. I believe we’ve also met once outside my ward. I believe you were with your... husband that day." Jack laughed curtly, intently watching the emotions on her face.

"My husband?" Kelsie had just said in confusion when she recalled that day and involuntarily smiled.

If she remembered correctly, it was the day she began helping at the laboratory with Callum just before its location was moved.

That day, something had prompted her attention, so she left before exchanging names with him.

For the next few minutes, the duo spoke fondly to each other.

"Ah, so it was you, Mr. Adler. I’m glad to see you’re hale and hearty after all these while."

"It’s all thanks to you. If you hadn’t done what you did, this old man would be nothing, but dry bones by now."

"Don’t say such a thing, sir. Even if I didn’t save you, someone else would’ve. Seeing how you’ve made it all these years despite being so sick, you’re bound to have a very long life."

"Don’t flatter this old man. Here, sit. My hero shouldn’t be standing even if she’s my doctor."

"Thank you, sir, but I’ll have to decline. I have other patients to tend to today, so I’ll be leaving now. Someone will bring you the pills and stay with you. If you need me, he would call me."

Jack’a eyes glinted mischievously as he leaned towards her a little.

"As a matter of fact, my hero. I’ve been looking for you everywhere to reward you for saving my life that day."

"Never did I think you’d be a doctor and in the hospital I practically live in. If this isn’t fate, I don’t know what is."

"I did what any other person would do." As always, Kelsie downplayed what she did, but the elderly man huffed.

"No, you didn’t. Don’t think you can fool me. I was conscious long enough to hear the vile words being spewed by those passerbys."

"They even said to take me away just so the prices of the houses around wouldn’t decrease if I died there."

Kelsie sucked in a deep breath, finally surrendering to him.

So this is where that jerk gets his persistence from.

"Now then, this is not exactly a reward. It’s a gift I’m hoping you won’t decline." Jett finally delved to the point, eyes still watching Kelsie’s face for any sudden emotion.

"As a doctor, I can’t accept anything of monetary value from my..." Kelsie was saying when the man politely cut her off with a knowing smile.

"I’ve been a patient long enough to know that. And you don’t have to worry, it’s nothing of that sort. All you have to do is marry one of my grandsons."
