Chapter 158: Chapter 158 In The Midst Of Her Enemies
Deborah’s new friend and those with Laura couldn’t help turning to each other awkwardly before ultimately turning their attention to a frozen Laura, after all, she was the one who asked for proof.
"You... you want us to believe you’re able to pay for such an expensive place all on your own? Where did you get the money to do so? It couldn’t have been from the peanuts..." Deborah was hissing in exasperation, but paused when the wrong word slipped out.
Kelsie chuckled softly, attracting everyone’s attention again.
Peanuts? What was she talking about now?
Seeing the curiousness in their eyes, Deborah hurriedly parted her lips to correct her mistake, but Kelsie beat her to it, "I’m glad to know you know that my father has been sending me peanuts all these years."
"Why bring up the matter of your allowance when what we’re talking about has nothing to do with it?" Laura found her tongue and snorted loudly, drowning out Kelsie’s words with hers so the people had no idea what she said.
Deborah quickly nodded in agreement, eyes flickering across everyone’s face.
"Yes, that has nothing to do with anything. You’ve gotten involved with something shady, haven’t you?"
"You can’t tell me that’s not the case because I know better than anyone how impossible it is to pay for such an expensive apartment on your own."
"Your father and I found out you were pregnant on the day of your engagement ceremony to Bryan Baker and we let you off easily."
"Surely, you didn’t use that as an excuse to engage with men for money, did you?"
Such words were enough to offend anyone, but contrary to what they all expected, Kelsie shook her head in refusal and flashed Deborah a bright smile.
"Mother, don’t say things like that. Not only am I taller, I’m also prettier than Laura. So how could you mistake me for her and say all those gibberish to me?"
Deborah was taken aback for a moment before she glared hard at her, "You little... how dare you talk about your sister like that!"
Placing a hand on her chest, Kelsie glanced around, feigning confusion.
"Weren’t you disciplining your daughters for their bad behaviors just now?"
"What?" Deborah was genuinely confused.
Kelsie sighed in pity, "You’ve lived with her all these years right until she became an adult, so how could you not know of what she does in her spare time?"
Hearing her, Laura panicked, disbelief washing over her as her face flushed red.
But she didn’t bother to ask Kelsie how she knew and outrightly yelled at her, "Kelsie Sutton, watch your mouth!"
"That is no way to talk to your big sister, you insolent girl!" Kelsie immediately shot back, giving her a stern look.
Laura’s eyes trembled in disbelief and Deborah couldn’t believe her eyes.
Because they both raised their voices, they successfully attracted the attention of the people farther from them.
When they saw it was the celebrant’s family, their interest were instantly piqued and they turned their entire attention to them.
Seeing this, Laura warned through clenched teeth, "Let’s end this here. We shouldn’t give these people something to gossip about in their spare time."
Kelsie laughed, "Are you out of your mind, Laura?"
"Excuse me?"
"I’m reprimanding you right now, how dare you cut me off? Do you have no manners?"
When she phrased it like this, Laura couldn’t bring herself to retort. Was it just them, she would’ve been screaming her lungs out at Kelsie, but not when they were in public. She had an image to protect.
So she just fumed inwardly and said nothing.
Seeing how helpless her daughter was, Deborah’s eyes darkened and she barked, "Kelsie, have some manners and shut your mouth this instant!"
To everyone’s surprise, Kelsie nodded and turned to grab a bottle of wine from a nearby table.
Instantly realizing what she planned to do, Laura’s eyes widened in horror and she desperately took a step backward.
"Don’t you dar..."
She never got to complete her sentence as Kelsie emptied the content of the bottle on her with a stoic face.
Everyone closest to Laura moved backward, even Deborah couldn’t help it.
It was only after she moved away that she realized what had just happened and her face turned ashen.
"You’ve been away for so long, you seem to have forgotten your manners!"
Kelsie didn’t stop what she was doing as she retorted calmly, "I’ve told you to stop talking like that, mother. Our Sutton family is all about fairness. At least I like to believe so."
"Earlier, Laura promised she’d let me pour drinks and anything I want on her if I could provide proof that I rented the apartment myself and got the job at Haven Medical Center without Jett’s Adler’s help."
"It’s only right that she hold up to her own end of the bargain since I held up mine. Otherwise, she’d be known as the woman who doesn’t keep her words."
She paused and reached out for another glass.
Opening and emptying it on Laura, she continued, "A reputation like that won’t do our Sutton family or Lumen Group any good. You know that more than anyone, don’t you, mother?"
When she worded it like this, there was really nothing Deborah could say to chastise her without sounding ridiculous.
So in the end, she rushed towards Laura, but stood at a reasonable distance to avoid getting the drink on herself.
"Your sister might’ve made that promise, but she’s still your little sister. It’s alright for her to have a little doubt in you. But you know she always cares and looks out for you."
Kelsie glanced at her briefly and scoffed.
"She called me Jett Adler’s plaything. In what world does someone who looks out for you degrade you so blatantly and disrespectfully?"
Deborah was taken aback.
Not just by this retort, but by Kelsie’s unhinged behavior.
Was this really the Kelsie she knew? The Kelsie who hardly said a word was now saying so much?
This party was supposed to elevate her daughter and downstream Kelsie and her achievements.
But seeing her act out like this was something she couldn’t handle.
"What is going on here? Are you not enjoying the party?"
Hearing the voice of her husband, Deborah immediately spurned around, rushing to lock arms with him.
"Honey, Kelsie is acting out today. I know she hates us. She already made it obvious when she didn’t contact or try to help us four months ago, but acting out at her little sister’s birthday party is a little too much, don’t you think?"
"I mean, it’s fine to hate her, but it’s not fine to embarrass her like this. I know how long it took to pick out that dress."
Despite now having everyone’s judging eyes on her, including her father’s, Kelsie paid no heed to them.
While she reached to the side looking for what next to pour on Laura, Laura thought she was done and took a step backward.
However, Kelsie immediately pulled her back, "Don’t leave yet. You said I could pour anything I want. I’m not done yet."
Jerry Sutton was already fuming in rage seeing how she was blatantly ignoring his presence.
"Stop what you’re doing!"
She naturally glanced toward his direction, a faint smile hovering across her lips.
"Oh, father. You’re here. I was going to come find you once I was done here just so you know I came."
Before Jerry could say anything, a loathing snicker came from behind her.
"You keep getting so bad-mannered by the day. Do you think those men you hung out with the other day will save you if you fall out with your family?"
"If you can’t even be on good terms with your family, you’d be dreaming if you think people from reputable families like them will want to remain acquainted with someone like you."
Kelsie paused again, sighing softly in exhaustion when Bryan Baker walked to stand in front of her.
Making use of this distraction, Laura slipped towards Bryan, but stood a few meters from him with her face downcast.
She didn’t care about Bryan, but his status and the fact they were still engaged was something she had been using in the past four months.
Though he had a foul attitude and only cared about himself, once someone bruised his ego, he was sure to strike back hard.
Kelsie had demonstrated such strength and resolve today that she was rendered scared to talk back and couldn’t even do anything.
She hit the right spots to render her speechless and openly humiliated her by throwing drinks and food on this dress which took her hours to pick out.
She would never forgive her!
Bryan didn’t spare the pouting Laura a glance.
Instead, he raised his eyes to meet Kelsie’s, both hands buried in his pockets as he tutted righteously, "I know we were engaged in the past and you hold a very mean grudge towards me, but don’t you think you’re going too far?"
"So what if you’re pretty now? Hitting me with a lawsuit wasn’t enough, you just had to go after my fiancée, didn’t you?"
"If you’re thinking about apologizing, forget it. What you did isn’t just an insult to her, it’s an insult to me too."
"So a mere apology won’t do. Laura has to do exactly what you just did to her. So put down that plate of food and lower your face this instant!"
