Chapter 140 Jesse’s Fever…
Chapter 140: Chapter 140 Jesse’s Fever...
One hour later in Haven Medical Center
Inside an operating room, Kelsie performed another surgery on the patient.
Some doctors from neurosurgery who had nothing better to do, mocked her from the operating theater gallery.
"I heard it was fluid build-up in the brain. How is a careless person like her considered the best in our department?"
"Mr. Reynolds sure tried his best to help strays every year. First was Amy Meyer and now her? What a joke."
"I can’t help, but wonder if she really studied abroad. She must’ve seen how everyone treats Dr. Meyer and made up a lie that she studied abroad so she wouldn’t be treated the same way."
The fourth doctor, who was yet to realize he placed his hand on the surgical intercom microphone, had just parted his lips to chip in as well when Kelsie suddenly raised her eyes.
Their breaths instantly hitched and they subconsciously looked away from her unfeeling gaze.
It was easy for them to bully and talk down to Amy Meyer because of her poor background, but she scared them. Her unsmiling eyes especially.
Moreover, she didn’t just have Kelvin Reynolds seemingly having her back, they had observed her for the past four months to know she wasn’t a pushover.
However, they had been long displeased with her unbothered attitude and wasn’t about to let the chance of putting her in her place slip past them.
So they returned their eyes to her and harrumphed in disdain amongst themselves.
"What does she think she’s looking at? Is it not enough that she messed up the patient’s first surgery, does she intend to kill him this time by looking away from him?"
"How could a doctor think so little of another person’s life? She’s clearly not fit to be down there!"
Kelsie didn’t blink at their insults as she spoke up calmly.
"Excuse me, there’s an ongoing surgery down here. I can’t focus properly on the surgery with every one of you shouting into the microphone."
Upstairs, the doctors instantly fell silent, their eyes darting to the doctor pressing down on the microphone whose face was now burning in embarrassment.
At the same time, a trace of panic flashed past his eyes.
"This little... do you think she heard everything we said? Will she report it to Mr. Reynolds?"
At this, the other doctors snickered and patted him on the shoulder consolingly.
"Why are you so scared? You didn’t say anything wrong. A patient almost died because of her, I’m sure he’s livid."
"You’re right. Haven Medical Center prides itself with the lower number of people who die during and after surgery. If he finds out she almost added a number to it, he’s not going to let her off the hook easily."
"90 percent of the patients in this hospital love her. Some don’t even want to be operated on unless she’s the doctor-in-charge. No matter how angry he’ll be, he’ll still protect her. After all, the patient didn’t die."
"I already reported it to the hospital. Even if he wants to protect her, it’s out of his hands now."
The youngest doctor in their midst with a buzz cut suddenly spoke up for the first time, his brown eyes pinned on Kelsie.
An hour later, Kelsie was done draining the fluid that had gathered in the patient’s brain.
After confirming his vitals were fine, she closed him up, gave her assistant some instructions and left the operating room.
She was starving. Because of that jerk, she couldn’t join the others to eat in the cafeteria earlier.
Like she expected, the cafeteria was almost empty except for a male doctor who was eating at a corner.
She got her food and sat down to eat. She had just scooped a spoonful into her mouth when someone else dropped a tray in front of her.
May Meyer sat across from her and clasped both of her hands underneath the table, but maintained a stoic expression as she tried not to show her worry.
"There will be a disciplinary hearing regarding what happened today."
"I’m aware." Kelsie mummed without looking at her, taking out the green peas in her plate.
May picked up her spoon to take the peas.
"You don’t like them?"
"It’s always half-done. I don’t like it half-done."
"By half-done, you mean..."
"It wasn’t cooked properly. Instead of melting into my mouth as soon as it touches my tongue, i have to chew on it for a few seconds. It’s stressful."
May chuckled.
"I like them not properly cooked."
"Good for you." Kelsie shrugged and began transferring the peas to May’s tray.
May forced on a smile, watching her continue eating once there were no more peas in hers.
"Most of the doctors in neurosurgery wanted your patient to die."
Kelsie paused, her now darkened eyes shooting up at May.
"What?"
May dropped her spoon and raised her eyes to meet Kelsie’s, exhaling heavily.
"You take on every surgery they reject. Mostly the ones they’ve told patients will be unsuccessful. When you operate on them, it becomes a successful surgery."
"You’ve shamed them to the point they no longer have credibility even with their patients. So they want to get rid of you."
"They know Mr. Reynolds will not let what happened today affect you, so they reported it to the disciplinary committee instead."
"Only the medical staffs know of what happened, but once you go in to see the disciplinary committee, every patient in the hospital will know about your mistake and it’ll only be a matter of time before the press finds out about it."
Smacking her lips in disappointment, Kelsie suddenly lost her appetite.
"Imagine looking forward to someone’s death just so they could teach me a lesson. Disgusting. So disgusting."
May grimaced.
"Some of those in the disciplinary committee include doctors who want to get rid of you. So just expect to have painful words being hurled at you from every corner."
"The moment you feel you can’t take it any longer and talk back at them, they’ll cling onto your words, twist and mangle them to their satisfaction until they’ve succeeded in kicking you out."
Kelsie leaned back on her seat, parting her lips to say something when her ringing tone abruptly filled the air.
She picked it up and stared at the unknown number sprawled across her screen for a moment. fr\eewe.bn(o)v\el.c(o)m
She hadn’t given out her number to anyone recently so only one person could be calling her now.
Having no intention to speak with him, she muted the call for an hour and slipped the phone into her pocket before straightening up.
"I apologize for leaving like this, but I have to pick up my children from school."
"Children? Yo-you have children?" May was so surprised she didn’t know when she blurted out in disbelief.
The next second, she got a grip on herself and covered her mouth with both hands, genuinely flustered as she repeatedly bowed her head to Kelsie in apology.
"I didn’t mean it that way. It’s just that you’re so young I didn’t think you were married talk more of having children."
"I’m afraid I have to be on my way now. Enjoy your lunch, Dr. Meyer." Kelsie flashed her a small smile, not bothering to explain and strutted out.
Out of habit, she walked to where she usually parked, but sighed heavily when she recalled she hadn’t driven in.
Not only did she turn the car into a total scrap when she slammed into the Sedan, it was also riddled with bullets.
So she just dumped it at a junkyard and boarded a taxi to the hospital.
Because of this new situation in the hospital, she now had countless eyes on her again.
Hence, she didn’t think it was a good idea to bring in her children for their medical checkup.
So she just picked them up from school and dropped them at home.
However, as she kissed them goodbye, she realized Jesse was burning up.
Without thinking twice, she picked him up and dashed out of the apartment building.
The buzzing hospital staff turned their heads towards the direction of the familiar woman rushing in in a frenzy, a new rumor starting.
Had Kelsie been thinking straight, she would’ve known better than to come to Haven Medical Center.
By the time she arrived at the emergency room with Jesse, his fever had worsened and he was shivering, his teeth clattering hard against each other.
A pediatrician was called to attend to him almost immediately.
As he took Jesse’s temperature, he questioned Kelsie without turning to look at her.
"What happened to him?"
"I-I don’t know. He was fine this morning when I took him to school." The usually calm woman was flustered and even stuttered slightly as she answered.
"Does he have any health problem I should be aware of?"
"No, he doesn’t. He has never."
The doctor glanced at the high temperature on the thermometer and frowned slightly.
Then he leaned forward, gently patting him all over the body when he noticed the little boy kept wincing at the slightest bit of physical contact.
Finally, he reached out to take off his uniform, a horrific sight instantly greeted their eyes.
"His uniform is badly torn up, but given that his school vest isn’t dirty, it’s clear he didn’t fall. And his wounds are fresh. He got them today."
Kelsie inched towards Jesse, an icy look in her eyes as she closely inspected the wound all over his body.
Her eyes hardened when she picked up tiny splinters in some of the injuries.
"These are injuries from a cane. Someone beat up my son."
At this moment, Jett walked into the hospital’a lobby with a tight frown on his face.
In his desperate attempt to reach Kelsie, he had completely forgotten to put a cap over his head.
As he tried to call her again in the lobby, a nearby discussion caught his attention.
"Did you hear? Dr. Sutton rushed in a few minutes ago with a boy of roughly 6 years in her arms. I didn’t know she was married."
"I don’t think she’s married. Or is she? Maybe she’s one of those women who don’t wear their wedding rings at work?"
"But isn’t she too young to be married. From what I hear, she’s barely 25. If she came in her with a child of that age, then..."
The person abruptly stopped talking when a tall and lanky man suddenly gripped him tightly by the collar, his dark blue eyes seeming to pierce into his soul.
"Point me towards the direction of Dr. Sutton."
