Chapter 139: Chapter 139 Robbery Outside The Court

The courtroom fell completely silently.

The clerk who was walking back to his seat didn’t know when he halted in disbelief. f.re(e) w.e(b)nov el.c.om

Jett paid no attention to them and just turned his attention to Kelsie, the corners of his lips curling up in contempt.

"What is that look for? Didn’t you say you’d compensate me?"

How brazen.

Kelsie’s lips hardened into a thin line, absentmindedly sitting on the chair beside her.

While she thought of what to say, one of Jett’s lawyers turned to him in confusion.

"S-Sir, are you sure about what you’re saying?"

Jett’s eyes dimmed.

"Why? Does my breath reek of alcohol or do you just think I’m suddenly out of my mind?"

Although the lawyer quickly shook his head in refusal, his eyes and that of other lawyers were saying otherwise.

Yes! Yes, sir! We think you’re out of your mind! Only someone out of their mind would propose to a woman they were going out with in a courtroom.

It was easy for them to come to this conclusion after taking a minute to ponder the situation.

Even the judge presiding over the case wasn’t left out.

He narrowed his eyes at Jett, exhaling sharply. "I understand that you are a wealthy man with influence, but I’m a busy man with tons of other cases to preside over today. My time is precious to me."

"So don’t you think bringing a case to court only to use it as a pretext to propose to your girlfriend is a little too much?"

"What happened to renting the most expensive place in the country to propose to her or flying her to a country with a beautiful scenery to do so?"

"Or you could even follow the example of one of those cheesy proposals I see online by booking an entire 5-star hotel and covering the entire floor with roses, eh?"

At this, Kelsie laughed awkwardly.

"What? Proposal? Your Honor, you shouldn’t scare a young woman like me with such words."

Jett’s eyes instantly darted to her. "Scare? If there’s anyone who should be scared here, it’s me. Why do you not look remorseful for what you did to me?"

"Hey, Mr. Adler. If I remember correctly you kissed back when I kissed you, so how dare you say I sexualled assaulted you?"

"I wouldn’t have kissed back if you didn’t suddenly latch onto me. You were drunk and wouldn’t let go of me, what was I supposed to do? I’m a lot of things, but I’m also a gentleman."

Once again, Kelsie was left with no choice, but to clamp her mouth shut.

Forget it. It was no use arguing with him. He had obviously prepared for this argument a long time ago.

How else would a man who always lost to her in an argument have so much to say?

In that case, nothing she said would save her today.

The judge picked up his gavel and banged it three times to get his attention.

Then he clasped his fingers and pinned his eyes on Kelsie, asking. "Ms. Sutton, clearly Mr. Adler here doesn’t want to settle for anything other than a marriage certificate. What do you have to say about that?"

"Your Honor, that condition is too absurd." She retorted in a bland voice.

The judge nodded in agreement.

"So what do you have to offer Mr. Adler as compensation then?"

Kelsie went silent.

What could she possibly suggest?

Jett had used over two minutes to mention possible things she could give him and how he didn’t want any of them.

She was still in thought when she Jett whisper something to his lawyers.

At this, the lawyer got on his feet and called out to the judge.

"Your Honor, permit me to tell you what my client has offered."

Kelsie raised a surprise brow while the judge nodded.

The lawyer then walked towards the clerk to hand him something, and the clerk in turn, handed it over to the judge.

After running his eyes through it, the judge frowned slightly.

"This is no different from what your client requested."

"Except in this case, my client has agreed to leave a signed copy of it in the safety deposit box of the bank just across the magistrate court." The lawyer quickly retorted.

Thinking she misheard, she turned to the lawyer, repeating, "You’re saying we would both sign a marriage certificate, but it wouldn’t be registered and will instead be kept in a safe box?"

The lawyer nodded and turned his attention to the judge. "If it’s not too much, Your Honor, my client has asked that the key of the safety deposit box be kept with you."

"Under no circumstances should you hand it over to any of them without the presence of the other person."

The judge glanced at the time on the wall clock and promptly nodded.

He didn’t have a choice. Refusing to accept would only make this ridiculous court case drag out even longer.

"Do you accept this conditon, Ms. Sutton?"

She promptly nodded. "Yes, Your Honor."

Exhaling in relief, he beckoned onto them, "You both may approach to sign the agreement now."

Jett was the first to get on his feet. Shortly followed by Kelsie.

Ten minutes later, the signed agreement was taken to the bank and the key to the safe box was given to the judge in the presence of everyone.

Only then did the case end.

When they got out of the building, they found dozens of mechanics along with cops patrolling the vicinity.

"What is this? Did anyone get robbed inside the court?"

"It looks like they’re repairing tires."

"That car over there has two tires missing. Don’t tell me some people came in here and stole them."

As the last lawyer mumbled in realization, he beckoned onto a passing cop.

"Officer, may I ask what happened?"

The officer pointed at a group of people being attended to by paramedics at a corner and sighed softly.

"We received a report that some thugs had come in to unscrew some tires. They beat up the security who found them and held some people hostage until they were done."

"The whole thing was done in a smooth and organized manner that we weren’t called in until they were several minutes gone."

An elderly couple who heard him were instantly livid.

"Those darn punks. Isn’t stealing jewelries more lucrative? Why steal car tires?"

"Honey, I think the important question is why steal just the tire instead of the entire cars."

"That’s because most of the cars now have trackers on them. Those sick bastards."

Kelsie merely swept her eyes across the cars whose tires were missing to know why.

"They stole tires of expensive cars. Limited edition cars. It’s easier to sell those on the black market than jewelries."

Everyone hearing her instantly glanced at the cars again and found themselves nodding their heads in agreement.

"Expensive cars? Does that mean Mr. Adler’s car was affected as well?" One of the lawyers suddenly blurted out.

While they glanced towards the direction of Jett’s car, Kelsie dipped her hand into her coat pocket to take out her buzzing phone.

It was the first-year she put in-charge of the patient she operated on yesterday.

The second she pressed the phone against her right ear, her panicked voice instantly came up.

"Dr. Sutton, the patient you operated on yesterday was awake an hour ago to complain of headache. He first said it wasn’t severe, so I gave him IV fluids."

"But he woke up ten minutes later to say his headache was getting worse. So I gave him opioids."

"But just now, he woke up all agitated and is writhing from the headache. I suspect brain swelling so I’ve given him 3% of hypertonic saline."

"I’ve also requested for a brain scan to be carried out again. When will you get here?"

Without realizing it, Kelsie began sprinting to her car.

"Twenty minutes. I’ll be there in twenty minutes. Keep him stable until then."

"Okay, doctor."

She had just gotten into her car when the front passenger’s door swung open and Jett came in.

Kelsie wasn’t in the mood to tell him to leave as she hurriedly started the car and stepped on the pedals.

Jett also realized something was amiss and didn’t bug her.

As he threw his eyes outside her window, he suddenly realized he had brought her out of a busy hospital just to throw a tantrum and mentally face-palmed himself.

"Mr. Adler, did you piss someone off recently?" Kelsie’s voice suddenly filtered into his ears, breaking him out of his thoughts.

He briefly glanced at her. "I’ve always had enemies, Ms. Sutton."

She hummed slightly, eyes moving to the side-view mirror.

"I see. I like to consider myself a peaceful person, so it seems to be one of your many enemies who have been following me from the court."

His eyes darted to the side-view mirror on his side almost immediately, eyes darkening instantly when he saw a black van with no license plate behind them.

From the corners of her eyes, Kelsie saw a Sedan speeding towards them and sucked in a deep breath.

The Sedan suddenly stopped swerved to the side, completely blocking her path.

Almost immediately, three men got out of the car.

One of them was a short and lanky man while the other two were tall, burly men.

They stood behind the short and lanky, pointing what seemed to be rifles at her car.

"Those bastards. They must be the same people who attacked the court house. Let me out here and go on your way. I’ll take care of this."

Kelsie didn’t retort. Instead, she glanced at the time on her wristwatch, tightened her grip on the steering and arched her back straight.

"You’re wealthy and influential. If I run into these men in front of me, you can make it all go away, can’t you?"

Jett grimaced and began fastening his seatbelt.

"You don’t have to ask."
