Chapter 132: Chapter 132 Dr. Meyer’s Free Hand Aspiration
"What? He’s not here again. How disappointing!"
"You’re talking of Dr. Sutton’s boyfriend, aren’t you? I’m also never around whenever he stops by. It’s becoming frustrating."
"Just survive on the description of him we tell you. He’s really tall and very handsome. He also drives a luxury car."
"Luxury car? Don’t spout nonsense. Since when do you know which cars are luxurious?"
"Hey, I know what I saw! That car didn’t just look expensive, it was luxurious. Like something the president would drive."
"Now you’re just exaggerating. I know he seems wealthy, but he can’t be that wealthy. People who are truly wealthy don’t wear expensive suits all the time."
The conversation between the five medical staffs instantly died down one of them saw Kelsie heading towards the front desk.
Three out of five of them picked up a chart, the fourth took out her phone, pretending to be on a call while the nurse behind the desk pretended to be typing.
The last person was Amy Meyer whose brows were creased slightly as she stared at the brain scan in front of her.
"Dr. Sutton, what do you say about assisting me in my surgery today?" She asked as soon as Kelsie got to the desk.
Kelsie glanced at the time and shook her head in refusal.
"I fear I’ll have to decline. I already have surgeries lined up..."
Amy picked up the brain scans, turning to look at her properly.
"I checked your schedule, you only have one surgery and it doesn’t start until 2pm. Furthermore, It’ll only take 2 hours."
"I have 5 surgeries lined up one after the other today and this is my second today. Why don’t you help a colleague out?"
Kelsie’s eyes narrowed slightly.
This woman was intentionally trying to provoke her, but for what reason?
No one has kept a lower profile than her in the past few months since they joined. Yet, she still managed to tick off people like Amy Meyer.
If she refused, she could bet her wrist the entire department would hear of how she refused to help out a colleague before the end of the day.
Hence, she exhaled softly and turned to Amy too.
"What is the surgery about?"
"Let’s talk in my office." Amy hummed and turned to leave.
As the women walked out side by side, the five people who had been gossiping early converged again.
"Dr. Meyer really has it out for Dr. Sutton."
"She has been here for over three years and only a few other doctors knows her name. Imagine the anger she must be feeling seeing a new doctor get this much recognition in just three months of joining."
"I bet she’s boiling with rage. I don’t blame her though. I heard from some residents in neurosurgery say that she barely sleeps for more than 5 hours everyday."
"Imagine working that hard and cutting down on your sleep only for someone who came in through the founders’ help to walk around like she owns the place. No wonder she has it out for her."
The nurse behind the desk suddenly saw the two women stop walking and hurriedly said to the four others in a raised voice, "What are you doing here? Don’t you have work to do?!"
Instantly, the group dissolved, each running in different directions.
Meanwhile, Amy Meyer had paused because of the buzzing of her phone in her coat pocket.
So Kelsie naturally did the same and watched as she impatiently pressed the phone against her right ear.
"What is it?"
A second later, Amy’s eyes widened in horror then she began sprinting towards the direction of the operating room.
Outside, she promptly changed into her scrubs. Kelsie also did the same and met her inside the operating room.
Those in the room glanced at each other in confusion when they saw Kelsie, but said nothing about her presence as they reported the patient’s condition to Amy.
"She convulsed and fainted. We don’t know how long she was unconscious before someone noticed she wasn’t sleeping and reached out to us. We gave her Lorazepam as soon as we found out."
Amy glanced at the patient for several seconds while Kelsie walked to her side to remind, "I can only assist if you brief me about her condition."
Amy raised her eyes to meet hers, slightly taken aback that she didn’t use the opportunity to leave.
After all, she had no business being in the operating room of a patient she knew nothing about.
"Twenty-four years old. Female. Mental stupor. Pupils are five and three millimeters. There’s no pupillary reflex in the right eye."
"Presumed diagnosis?"
"Presumed to be cerebral hemorrhage. She’s showing signs of status epilepticus."
Kelsie glanced at the patient monitor and nodded in understanding.
A nurse then handed her the woman’s brain scan. After staring at it for some seconds, she raised her eyes to look at Amy.
"80cc is confirmed for the right brain. So a navigation aspiration should do it, except there’s no time."
"You don’t know how long she’s been unconscious and it takes an hour for aspiration. If you delay the surgery any longer, she’ll die before you open her up."
"So you have no choice, but to do free hand aspiration. If you’re not prepared for this surgery, how about handing it over to someone else?"
Upon hearing her, Amy’s eyes instantly hardened and she almost sneered.
Just like she thought. This snotty brat was no different from the rest of them in their neurosurgery department.
So what if she graduated from a community college? She worked hard to get herself through medical school and become a neurosurgeon.
She wasn’t about to let these doctors who were given everything they wanted on a silver platter walk all over her just because they attended private schools.
Instead of responding to Kelsie, she turned to one of the nurses, "Place the monitor on my right, please."
Then she took her seat on a stool beside the patient and drew on the part of the head she was going to cut open. freew\ebno\vel..(c)om
She finished almost immediately and handed the skin marker to a nurse nearby before raising her hand towards Kelsie.
"Scalpel."
Kelsie inched closer to her, handing her the scalpel.
At the same time, a red-head waltzed into the operating theater gallery above.
Trailing behind him were two surgeons who looked to be in their 40s with their surgical team.
"Goodness, sir! If I knew you were planning to watch today’s surgery, I would’ve taken charge of this woman’s." The bald-headed doctor sighed.
"There’s an ongoing surgery. You should be quiet." To everyone’s surprise, he chided the doctor almost immediately, eyes pinned on the duo downstairs.
The two doctors glanced at each other in understanding.
They had all heard of how Kelvin recruited a young woman who graduated from a community school to be part of his hospital years ago.
According to the rumors, he had watched Amy Meyer keep a boy with asthma alive.
Apparently, the boy had left the house, mistakenly taking an empty inhaler as it was the same color as the new one his parent got for him.
While the people around couldn’t do much to help him except calling the ambulance, she performed a mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to keep him alive.
He was so impressed by her resourcefulness and quick thinking that he invited her to be a part of his hospital.
What they didn’t know was that Kelvin merely did that to draw attention to his hospital. Back then he didn’t have enough money to run a better advertisement.
So when he saw Amy was getting a National recognition for the heroic act she performed, he knew it’d be a good opportunity to recruit her as part of his hospital.
Other big hospitals were already hesitant to recruit her when they learnt she graduated from a community school.
So when the netizens found out about this, how they viewed Haven Medical Center significantly improved.
And truth be told, Kelvin had long forgotten there was someone like this in his hospital.
They watched the surgery for close to a minute before Kelvin asked, "What are they performing?"
"A catheter should be inserted in her brain and to do that, they’d have to do a navigated aspiration." The bald-headed doctors hurriedly explained.
The words had just rolled off his tongue when the other doctor exclaimed in disbelief.
"What are they doing? Shouldn’t they first... it seems they’re doing a free hand aspiration!"
Before they could digest his words, he turned on the microphone and to lash at Amy.
"Dr. Meyer, what do you think you’re doing? Even seasoned doctors don’t perform free hand aspiration. How dare you endanger the life of your patient!"
Amy’s hands trembled slightly and she was just about to raise her head when Kelsie hushed softly.
"Don’t pay attention to him. I know you wouldn’t have started the aspiration if you didn’t know what to do."
"Focus on your patient and don’t think of what anyone upstairs is saying. I’m your assistant today which means the outcome of this surgery will affect me."
"If you don’t listen to me and do as you wish and something happens to this patient, that’ll create a huge dent in my career, but it’ll end yours. You don’t want that for us, do you?"
Amy didn’t realize when she exhaled heavily and nodded.
She put away the scalpe and stretched her hand towards Kelsie again, "Suction."
And so the surgery continued with neither of the women paying attention to the red-faced doctor upstairs.
"They must be out of their minds performing a free hand aspiration. Who even approved this?"
Kelvin finally tore his eyes away from the women to glare at the mumbling doctor.
"If you have nothing positive to say, why don’t you show yourself out?"
The doctor was startled and bowed to him apologetically.
"I-I... forgive me, sir. I was out of line to yell at her like that. But if anything happens to that patient, the hospital will..."
He was still talking when Kelvin calmly turned his eyes away from him.
"Show yourself out and don’t bother to return until the end of the operation."
Gritting his teeth in anger, the doctor had no choice, but to comply, leaving with his team.
As soon as he was gone, Kelvin turned to the remaining doctor.
"What happens if the catheter is placed on the wrong location?"
The bald-doctor stared at the patient solemnly.
"From what I hear, the patient was found long after she passed out. We think it was at least five hours before someone noticed she wasn’t sleeping."
"Whether it’s Inserted on the right location or not, she’s dead regardless."
