Chapter 131: Chapter 131 The Calm Before The Storm

Kelsie clenched her jaw tightly, lowering her eyes to the notepad as she forced out a smile.

"I’m a neurosurgeon not a therapist, Mr. Adler. So I don’t really see how that piece of information has anything to do with me."

"If you think you might have a son why don’t you try looking for him instead of discussing it with me?"

The usually observant man fell into thought again as soon as he was done speaking. Hence, he didn’t notice the fidgeting woman.

Kelsie was also in thought. Especially after Daniel’s words to her the other night came flooding back to her.

That crazy man clearly said her son looked a lot like his brother. Was that brother Jett Adler?

But the next second, she shook her head at that possibility.

That was impossible. Members of the Adler family were known to openly despise each other.

On the surface, they were the most powerful family in the country, but inside, they constantly fought and tried to bring each other down for more power.

Even if Jett did have a brother, they wouldn’t be that close.

She had just heaved a silent sigh of relief when the discussion at the apartment building the other day when those from the Sutton family caused a scene, came flooding back to her.

If she recalled correctly, didn’t someone say one of Jett’s...

Her thoughts suddenly came to a halt when the man across her sat up and raised a questioning brow.

"Earlier today when you came over to look at my condition, I really thought I was hallucinating you."

She stared at him blankly. "What are you trying to say?"

"Doesn’t fever cause hallucinations?"

"Have you been hallucinating?"

"I’m just thinking, if I thought I hallucinated earlier today because of my fever, then isn’t it possible that I could’ve hallucinated that little boy?"

A knowing smile instantly crept onto her face.

"That could’ve been the case. Your fever was quite high when I came into you room." Then she paused, biting the insides of her cheeks as she tried to resist the urge to tell the truth.

In the course of doing so, she kept making funny faces, catching the attention of the man who had never seen her smile except when mocking him or trying to be professional.

"What is it? You look like you still have a lot to say."

Kelsie sighed heavily, instantly giving in.

"People hallucinate when they have a high fever similar to yours this morning. But that ends once your temperature returns back to normal."

"And given that you’re able to walk around so comfortably means you should be fine in a couple days after taking drugs."

"Are you saying I really saw a kid who looks like me? It wasn’t a hallucination? That is too strange." Jett mumbled incoherently in disbelief as he lowered his eyes to the floor.

The sound of a ringing phone filled the quiet air at this moment and Kelsie reached into her drawer to take out her ringing ohon.

Seeing the name on the screen, she excused herself to answer it.

"Ms. Sutton, I’ve been called to present our case, but the presiding judge asked for it to be a chamber hearing." Jane Peterson’s voice came up as soon as the call went through.

Kelsie chuckled softly, "Does it mean what it sounds like?"

Though unsure of why she was chuckling, Jane hummed.

"Yes, Ms. Sutton. Mr. Baker’s attorneys must’ve made rounds during the three months we had to wait to present our case."

"The judge will call us in asking us to settle. Mr. Baker’s attorneys will clearly offer you money as compensation."

"Should we discuss over the phone how much you want from them or do you wish to turn down the settlement and push forward with an official hearing?"

"I’ll push forward with an official hearing." Kelsie made her decision almost immediately.

Jane Peterson went mute on her end. Several seconds later, she thought it wise to remind Kelsie.

"The Baker family are powerful. They have numerous people in power owing them favors."

"If this judge is one of those people, it doesn’t matter how strong our case is, he will easily throw it out."

Looking out her window, Kelsie suppressed her yawn, "Okay?"

There was a rustling sound from Jane’s end which went on for a few seconds before she exhaled heavily.

"I don’t do this very often, Ms. Sutton, but you’ve been patient with me ever since you came to Peterson’s Law Firm for help, so I’m going to be honest with you; settling and accepting compensation is way better than taking them to court."

At this, Kelsie tutted in amusement. "Is this your way of telling me you’re not sure if you’ll win the law suit?"

Jane promptly refused, "It’s not that. These group of attorneys the Baker family has frequently resort to underhanded measures to win law suits."

Kelsie gently smacked her lips gently against each other.

"I didn’t ask you that, Ms. Peterson. I just want to know if Peterson’s Law Firm will be able to handle the heat from them."

"If you know you can’t, there’s no need to force yourself to take on my case. After all, you won’t be able to hold me responsible if your law firm loses every customer it has gotten over the years over such a clumsy case as mine."

"I still have a few law firms to ask about this. I’m hanging up now to go through..."

"I’ll do it." Jane abruptly interrupted her.

"Great. Keep me updated." Kelsie hummed lightly and hung up.

Jane Peterson... did this woman finally recognize her?

If not, why else would the same woman who refused to leave the shallow waters for years willingly agree to dip in somwhere deep?

As she pondered on this, she turned around to face Jett only to see him shivering in his seat.

His vibrant face had drained of blood and turned pale and he was barely able to keep his eyes open.

A trace of panic flashed past her eyes as she rushed up to him, feeling his temperature and pointing the pen-light into his eyes.

Although finding it strange his temperature and everything else seemed normal, she still stretched her hand to pick up the telephone in order to call a nurse.

However, the man suddenly stopped shivering and leaned forward, placing his palm on hers.

Without realizing it, she had perched herself on the edge of her desk in her rush to check his vitals.

When he leaned forward, his head came to rest on her thighs, the closeness of their position looking very suggestive.

It was at this moment that the door suddenly swung open and the duo’s eyes subconsciously followed it.

"Team leader, do you think I should... argh!" Zoe’s lazy words turned to a surprised shriek before she clamped her mouth shut with her palm.

"I mean, sorry. I came at the wrong time. Pretend I wasn’t here and go back to what you were doing."

Kelsie hurriedly pushed the man away and got on her feet looking dazed. But still managed to say in defense, "Don’t be ridiculous. Mr. Adler was shivering just now and I was checking to see if he was fine."

Zoe instantly squinted her eyes at the healthy-looking man.

"He was shivering? That looks like a completely healthy man to me."

Jett couldn’t resist nodding his head in agreement.

"Yes. I’m fine. When was I shivering?"

"Pardon?" Kelsie scoffed at the shamelessness.

Jett suddenly flashed her a wide grin.

"Dr. Sutton, don’t tell me you’re so worried about me that you subconsciously think you saw me shivering."

"What? When did that happen? Why would I ever do a thing like..." Kelsie was denying it with utmost seriousness when the girl at the door calmly waved her aside.

"No need to deny it just because I’m here. Mr. Adler pretty much made it clear at the reception that you two were dating. So you can drop the act now!"

Kelsie’s eyes instantly darkened as she shot the man a stern glare.

"What? You did what?"

Jett pursed his lips.

The room suddenly fell silent.

The calm before the storm.

Zoe promptly excused herself from the room.

As soon as she was out, the man shrugged unbotheredly.

"This one intern said girlfriends and boyfriends broke up all the time when someone said I was your boyfriend."

"I’m not superstitious, but I believe in things being jinxed. And I wasn’t about to let that punk jinx something that was yet to start."

Her eyes hardened.

"Jett Adler!"

He flinched, dramatically holding his chest as he looked up at her in disbelief.

"What’s this?" But the next second, his eyes twinkled slyly.

"You said my full name. It rolled off your tongue so smoothly it made my heart flutter. Do me a favor and do it again. Yell at me using my full name."

Realizing he played her earlier by pretending to shiver, the woman sighed softly and returned to her seat, picking up her mouse.

"You’re weird. I’m transferring you to another doctor."

He leaned forward, his cheeks stretching into a small smile.

"I’ll have the hospital transfer any doctor you transfer me to. If you leave the hospital, I’ll be sure to follow."

She huffed, "If I’m going to remain as your doctor, then permit me to schedule a brain scan session for you."

Jett subconsciously felt his head.

"Why? Did the fever affect my brain?"

"No, the Jett Adler I know is a grumpy jerk and narcissist, but this one in front of me seems to have lost his mind."
