Chapter 124: Chapter 124 Caught In The Crossfire
Kelsie’s eyes darted to Calvin Reynolds once he got on the phone with someone, already noticing another difference between the twins.
Kelvin was calm and collected despite the glaring inquisition in his eyes and pretended not to care about what he had just seen.
Calvin, on the other hand, wasn’t one who liked to remain anxious. Hence, his going away to confirm she was just someone who looked a lot like the woman he knew back in the day.
All she did was show her face and they already looked so nervous. She could even tell the questions running through their minds.
Perhaps they were wondering if Lois Fletcher had miraculously come back to life.
Her eyes dimmed slightly and she lowered her eyes to the floor.
If these men really had a hand in her mother’s death, she didn’t plan to forgive them.
She saw Kelvin’s shoes move close to her and raised her eyes to meet his smiling face.
"So, Ms. Sutton, Callum has told me about you and how you’re qualified for the position, but I want to hear from the horse’s mouth now."
He paused and glanced around for an empty table. When he saw the one with Jett and Serbian, his smile broadened as he strutted towards them.
The Adler family were the largest shareholders in Haven Medical Center. So he naturally knew what Jett looked like as the man had come to the hospital way too many times in the past to check up on his grandfather whenever the elderly man was admitted.
Serbian, on the other hand, he didn’t recognize since he wasn’t the face of his family.
But given that a man like Jett was comfortably sitting with Serbian, he reckoned he must be someone wealthy and influential too.
"Mr. Adler, you’re here. i didn’t think you’d attend."
Jett stared at him with empty eyes.
"Are you trying to tell me something, President Reynolds?"
The middle-aged man hurriedly shook his head in refusal.
"I’m just glad you were able to make it. As a fellow busy man, I understand why you have to be absent from events like this."
"So I know what it took you to be here. And it means a whole lot to me and Haven Medical Center."
Jett merely turned his eyes away from him without another word, returning it to the woman standing behind him.
Serbian noticed this and a scowl settled on his face, but he held himself from saying anything.
Already used to Jett’s coldness, Kelvin didn’t pick offended and turned to beckon onto Kelsie and Callum.
Serbian promptly got on his feet to pull out a chair for Kelsie, sighing softly, "Ms. Sutton, you’ve always been beautiful, but you’re radiating tonight!"
Jett’s blank face cracked and the other two men glanced at him in astonishment.
Kelsie flashed Serbian a small smile, bowing to him slightly as she took her seat.
"Thank you so much, Mr. Howard."
Serbian’s eyes instantly fell and he pressed his lips together in disappointment.
"Mr. Howard? I thought we were past that? Just call me Serbian. I’d like to call you Kelsie as well."
She didn’t think too much about it and nodded, parting her lips to reply when the man across them huffed in irritation.
"Mr. Howard, do you have no shame? You’ve only known her for a few days, how dare you insist that you drop all formalities with each other?"
Serbian wasn’t one to get angry easily, but something about Jett butting into everything he did and said pushed every nerve in his body.
"What does that have to do with you? It’s none of your business what we discuss. If she has no problem with it, why do you raise your voice at me?"
Jett immediately went mute, biting down the insides of his cheeks as he met the surprised eyes of Callum and Kelvin.
Taking advantage of the brief silence, Kelvin leaned forward to politely ask, "Mr. Adler, do you know this woman?"
The man mummed, "We’re close."
"We are?" Kelsie didn’t know when she blurted out in surprise.
"What she said." Serbian sneered, glowering at him.
But this time, Jett had a better argument as he ignored Serbian and settled his eyes on Kelsie’s face.
"How could you say that? Excusing all the times we’ve been together, have you forgotten I helped you find that dress you’re wearing yesterday?"
Kelsie pursed her lips in disbelief.
This shameless man.
She was giving him the cold shoulder after his proposal yesterday, but he still refused to give up.
Where did his pride from weeks ago go?
"D-did that really happen?" Serbian didn’t know when he stuttered.
He quickly realized and cleared his throat noisily before shooting her date a stern gaze.
"You seem to be her date, yet you didn’t shop online for a dress to send her?"
Callum sucked in a deep breath, unable to say anything, the anger in Serbian’s eyes making his brain go blank.
"I-I didn’t know her size or anything so I offered for us to buy clothes at a clothing store. JD Clothing Store, that’s where we went."
Jett flashed him a mocking smile, clicking his tongue pettily, "A shame neither you nor your Howard family has a clothing store. Now do you see why Ms. Sutton and I are best for each other?"
The trio were stunned by this level of pettiness.
Especially Kelvin who had been given a cold shoulder by him just a moment ago.
While Serbian suppressed the fact he was seething inwardly, Kelvin chuckled softly.
"You helped her pick a dress, you two must be really close, Mr. Adler."
"She also lives in the same apartment building as me. Anyone telling you we’re not close is either a hater or someone who’s trying to hide that we’re close."
With such smooth words, he rendered Kelsie and Serbian’s next words utterly useless.
Kelvin nodded in understanding.
Then he felt a pat on the shoulder and turned his head to see a man behind him.
He excused himself from the table and promptly went with him.
Seconds after he left, Callum kept looking over his head warily.
"It’s weird. I feel like there’s a sword hanging over my head ready to piece me any moment from now." He mumbled to Kelsie’s hearing, placing his palms on his head.
Kelsie stared over his head, frowning slightly, "Are you getting sick?"
"It started just now. I’ll run tests once I get to the hospital tomorrow."
Kelsie nodded and took out her phone to play Keira’s game again.
A second later, the man turned to her to question, "i didn’t know you were close with Jett Adler and Serbian Howard."
"I met Mr. Howard about a week ago. Maybe less than a week. You already know about Mr. Adler."
Serbian scoffed from where he sat, "Don’t beat around the bush and just ask us directly."
Callum stared at him speechlessly for a moment before turning his eyes back to her.
"Well, they seem to like you. Are you going out with any of them?"
"Mr. Howard is an acquaintance and Mr. Adler owns my apartment building."
"I know. I’m just asking if..."
"Are we going out?"
"What?"
"We know each other. Hasn’t it been years?"
"It has. Why?"
"Does that mean we’re going out?"
It took Callum a while to get what she was trying to say. When he did, he no longer said anything and just stared ahead of him, at the men who were glaring daggers at him.
A minute later, Eric briskly walked towards Jett to whisper something into his ear, prompting the man to leave with him.
Serbian wasn’t left out. He received a call shortly after and went out to take it.
Twenty minutes later, Kelsie got up to leave.
Callum didn’t have anything else to do so he left with her.
Under a shade in the parking lot, Kelvin and Calvin Reynolds watched the car with the two of them drive out of the gate.
Without turning to look at his brother, Kelvin asked, "What did you find out?"
Calvin tapped the screen of his phone a few times and passed it to him.
"That’s the certificate of death from our hospital. I also confirmed she really was the one who was wheeled in that day."
"Thankfully, we had installed surveillance cameras a few days before the accident happened."
Kelvin tilted his head to the side in thought.
"If she’s really dead then Kelsie Sutton must be her daughter, not so?"
Calvin was silent for a while before he spoke up, "About that, there’s no way to confirm it since she died a few minutes after she was wheeled into the hospital."
"Her husband didn’t send her medical record as she never went into the operating room nor did he request for an autopsy when she died."
Kelvin felt the side of his lips with his fingers, quickly making a decision.
"Who’s her husband? Find him. If this Kelsie Sutton really is really Lois Fletcher’s daughter, we’ll have to do something about her."
