Chapter 30: Empire First Step
"No matter how many times you request it I can’t recommend you to the new staff supervisor," the manager said. "He is very rude. He doesn’t respect anyone. If I had another opportunity I would have quit this job long ago."
Adam had not said anything. But the manager was already complaining to him. The manager was actually Adam’s friend. He worked with him at the same hotel. He was older than Adam but they had become friends over their shared misery.
Adam listened to his friend’s rant. Then he spoke. "Okay," he said his voice calm and steady. "So I’ll give you an opportunity. Will you quit your job?"
The manager went silent on the other end of the line. For a moment there was only the sound of his breathing. Then he spoke again.
His voice was full of disbelief. "Have you been drinking this early in the morning?" he asked. "And after that you found me to call?" He thought Adam was joking.
He thought his friend was making fun of his misery. He did not know that this single phone call was about to change his life forever. And not just his life. The lives of many others.
The world was about to change. And it all started with this one simple offer. An opportunity. A chance to escape. A chance to build something new. A chance to become something more.
The manager did not know any of this. He just thought his friend was drunk.
He was wrong. Very wrong. Adam was more sober and more clear-headed than he had ever been in his entire life. He had a plan. And his friend the manager was a crucial part of it. The first piece of his new shadow empire.
Adam did not mind his friend’s words at all. He just smiled a little. "I’m not joking," he said. "And I haven’t been drinking this morning."
After hearing this his friend the manager said "Then why are you talking such nonsense?"
"I’m not in the mood for jokes," Adam replied. "And I’m not talking nonsense. I just want to ask you one thing. Will you work for me? I will pay you more than what you are getting at that hotel right now."
The manager was silent for a few seconds. Then he started laughing. "Adam if this is a joke then stop it now," he said. "I’m already in a very bad mood. Don’t make it worse for me in the morning."
But Adam’s voice was still confident. "I’m not lying," he said. "A piece of land belonging to my mother was sold. My father doesn’t know about it. She had put it in my name. I have received the money from it."
After hearing this the manager started to believe him a little. Adam knew that if he told the manager that he had a lot of money the manager would not believe him at all.
And Adam also knew that he could not tell the manager that he had a job that was paying him a lot of money. The manager had been his friend for a long time.
He knew Adam well. He knew that Adam could never get such a job. He would try to find out the whole story. And Adam did not want to tell anyone about the app. That’s why Adam had chosen this excuse.
It was a believable lie. A lie that would serve his purpose. A lie that would change both their lives forever. He had taken the first step in building his shadow empire. And his first employee was just a phone call away from accepting his offer.
The manager was silent for a few seconds on the other end of the line. Adam could hear him breathing.
Finally he spoke. "Ah," the manager said. "So that’s where this attitude is coming from. I thought you had started drinking early in the morning. And that I was your first target."
Adam laughed. It was a genuine laugh. "You didn’t answer my question," he said.
The manager sighed. "Okay," he said his voice now serious. "I’ll answer your question. But first you tell me. How much money do you have? And don’t lie. Because if you have less money and I quit my job then I’ll be on the street with you."
Adam felt a little sad when he heard this. But then he realized that what the manager was saying was right to a certain extent. No one would want to leave their job for someone who didn’t have money themselves.
At the very least the manager needed assurance that Adam had enough money.
Enough to sustain him for some time. Enough to work on whatever idea Adam had in mind.
Adam knew how capable the manager was. He was smart and hardworking. He just needed an opportunity. And Adam was going to give him that opportunity.
Adam took a deep breath. He decided to tell him the truth. At least a part of it. "I have two and a half million dollars right now," he said his voice calm and steady. "And I will get the rest of the money soon. Another seven and a half million dollars. That means I will get a total of ten million dollars."
After hearing this the manager was silent. The silence stretched on. Adam was very surprised. He wondered why the manager was so quiet.
He had expected a reaction. A shout of surprise. A laugh of disbelief. But there was only silence. He waited. He listened. And he wondered what was going through his friend’s mind.
He had just laid his cards on the table.
Now it was the manager’s turn to play his hand. The fate of his new empire rested on this single conversation. He hoped he had made the right move. He hoped his friend would trust him. He hoped he would say yes.
He is aware of his friend’s employment, which is not particularly rewarding due to low salary and a work culture devoid of respect, as demonstrated by the job manager.
