Chapter 31: Recruit
Suddenly Adam heard a shout from the other end of the line. It was the manager. "Adam you became so rich and you didn’t even tell me!" he yelled. His voice was a mix of shock and excitement.
Adam smiled. "But I’m telling you now," he said. "That’s why I’m telling you to quit your job. I’ll give you double the salary you are getting now. I already know how much they pay you."
After hearing this the manager became emotional. "Adam my brother," he said his voice thick with emotion. "Are you telling the truth? You’re not joking with me right?"
Adam’s voice became serious. "If you come to my place I will show you my bank account," he said. "That’s why I’m telling you to quit that job. I have a very strong idea. A very big idea. We will definitely succeed."
Adam spoke with so much confidence that the manager started to believe him. He felt a surge of hope. He could finally escape his miserable job. He could finally do something meaningful with his life. He made a decision.
"Okay," he said his voice firm. "I’m with you. I’m coming to your house right now." He hung up the phone.
Adam also put down his phone. He looked out the window of his small office. He saw the students playing on the court. He saw the vast school complex. He saw the city stretching out beyond it. He smiled a confident smile.
"My friend," he said to himself. "Now we will both control this world." The first piece of his empire had been set.
The first soldier had been recruited. The game was truly on. And he was ready. He was more than ready. He was born for this. He was born to rule. And he would. One click at a time.
Adam felt a sense of triumph. He had his manager. His first recruit. But as he looked out at the sprawling school grounds a new thought occurred to him.
He realized that the manager alone would not be enough. He needed someone else. He needed his other friend. The one who worked in food delivery.
Adam knew that even though his friend was just a food delivery boy he possessed a unique skill. A skill that Adam needed. Adam could not go out into the field himself. He had to stay in the shadows.
But he needed someone on the ground. Someone to be his eyes and ears. Someone who knew the city inside and out. Someone who could keep an eye on everything. And his friend whose name was Andrew was the perfect person for that job.
Adam again took out his mobile phone. He searched for Andrew’s number in his contact list. He found it and called him.
Andrew was riding his bicycle at that moment. He was on his way to deliver an order. He heard his phone ringing. He pulled his bicycle to the side of the road. He took out his phone and answered it.
"Adam?" he said. "You haven’t been coming for food delivery for a few days. Is everything alright? Should I come and see you?"
Adam was touched by his friend’s concern. "No it’s nothing like that," he said. "Actually I have an offer for you."
Andrew was a little surprised. "An offer?" he asked.
"What kind of offer?" He could not imagine what kind of offer Adam could possibly have for him. They were both just struggling delivery boys trying to make ends meet. What could Adam possibly offer him? He had no idea that this phone call was about to change his life.
Just as it had changed the manager’s. Adam was assembling his team. He was gathering his soldiers. And Andrew was the next one on his list.
The shadow king needed his spies. And Andrew was the perfect candidate. The city was his domain. And soon it would be Adam’s too. Through Andrew.
Adam smiled. He could hear the skepticism in Andrew’s voice. "Quit your job and come to me," Adam said. "I will give you double the money you make from this job."
Andrew was a little surprised by Adam’s words. He was also concerned. "Okay," he said. "I think you are really sick. I’m coming to your house this evening. I’ll talk to you then. I have a very important delivery to make right now." Andrew hung up the phone.
Adam was a little surprised to see that Andrew did not listen to his whole proposal. He had cut the call before Adam could explain. But Adam understood. Andrew and even the manager had their own constraints.
If someone suddenly called them and told them to quit their job it would not be easy for them to believe. Adam knew this because he had been through similar situations himself.
He had been desperate. He had been hopeless. But Adam was confident that Andrew would listen to him when he explained everything properly.
Now Adam just had to wait for the school day to end. He sat in his office looking out at the students on the court. The time passed slowly. He felt a strange sense of detachment from the world. He was a millionaire.
A secret king. And yet here he was stuck in a small office in a high school waiting for a bell to ring. It was a bizarre and surreal situation.
Then he heard it. The loud shrill sound of the school bell. It meant that his period was over. Adam came out of his office. Just then a student came up to him. He was holding a sheet of paper.
"Teacher," the student said handing the paper to Adam. "This is the attendance sheet for all the children."
Adam was very surprised to hear this. He took the sheet of paper. He looked at it. It was a list of all the students in his class. And next to each name there was a box to mark their attendance.
He thought to himself I forgot to take the attendance. It was such a basic duty of a teacher. And he had completely forgotten about it. He felt a fresh wave of incompetence wash over him.
He had been so focused on his own plans on his own grand ambitions that he had forgotten the simple task he was supposed to be doing here. He had failed his first real test as a teacher.
He just hoped no one would notice. He hoped he could get through the rest of the day without making any more mistakes. But he had a feeling that would not be the case.
He had a feeling his time at this school was going to be filled with many more failures. And many more lessons. He just hoped he would be able to learn them quickly enough to survive.
