Chapter 28: School (5)

One boy stepped forward. He had short black hair and an angry look on his face. He was clearly annoyed by Adam’s words.

"Teacher," he responded, his voice full of cynicism. "If you think we are so worthless and you say that you are very rich and left your business to come here... well I do not think you look rich." He looked Adam up and down.

"In fact I think you are lower than the lower middle class. You probably live on the street."

Adam had expected a reaction like this. He had known his words would provoke them. He had been looking down at his own hands with an air of arrogant boredom.

Now he slowly lifted his head. He looked at the boy who had spoken. There was no anger on his face. No reaction at all to the boy’s insult.

In his mind Adam felt a pang of sadness. He thought You are right and you are wrong. I was poor before. But what I told you now is not a lie. Of course the students could not hear his thoughts. All they saw was his calm arrogant expression.

Adam pointed a single finger at the boy. He crooked it beckoning him forward. "Come here," he said his voice soft but commanding.

All the students in the class were shocked by Adam’s attitude. The boy himself was also surprised. He had thought this teacher was just another new temporary hire. That’s why most of the students had been ignoring him.

But when Adam had called them worthless it had hurt their pride. They wanted to argue with him. They wanted to prove that they were not worthless.

When the black-haired boy had tried to insult Adam everyone had expected the new teacher to get angry. They were surprised to see that Adam was not angry at all. He was acting very arrogant. As if he really was very rich.

The boy walked forward. He stood in front of Adam. Adam looked down at him. "What is your name, short boy?" Adam asked. His tone was dismissive.

The boy’s face turned red with anger. He hated being called short. It was a sensitive topic for him. It was a name that had been used to tease him by only a few people.

He did not expect to hear it from his new teacher. The insult stung. He felt a surge of rage. He wanted to punch this arrogant teacher in the face. But he controlled himself.

He knew that would only get him into more trouble. He just stood there glaring at Adam his fists clenched at his sides. He was a proud boy. And this new teacher had just wounded his pride in front of the entire class.

He opened his mouth to say something to retaliate. But Adam spoke first. He stepped closer to John. He stood right in front of him their faces just inches apart.

He looked into John’s angry eyes with a cold intense gaze. "The next time you say anything wrong to me," Adam said his voice low and menacing. "Be ready. I will make your life very difficult. Without even laying a hand on you."

John was shocked. He felt a genuine fear. Adam’s attitude was so confident so threatening. He had never seen a teacher act like this before. He was used to teachers who were either kind or strict. But this man was different. He was dangerous.

Adam stepped back. He gave John some space. "So what’s your name?" he asked his voice returning to its normal dismissive tone. "You haven’t told me yet. Or should I just keep calling you by that name?"

John was still reeling from the threat. He quickly answered. "My name is John," he said.

Adam was silent for a few seconds. He seemed to be thinking. Then he spoke again. "Okay John," he said. "I’ll forget what you said. And you forget what I said today. We are both even. If you have any wrong feelings towards me I don’t care. Because I know very well how to answer someone. How to return a debt."

All the students in the class were watching this exchange with wide eyes. They looked at Adam as if he were a gangster. A kind of fear started to grow in their hearts. This new teacher was not someone to be trifled with.

Adam gestured for John to go back to his place. Then he addressed the whole class. "Okay," he said his voice now firm and authoritative.

"In today’s class I will take everyone’s introduction." He had their attention. He had established his dominance. He had created a persona that they would respect and fear.

It was a risky gamble but it had paid off. For now. He knew he would have to maintain this act. He would have to be the ruthless businessman who was forced to teach a bunch of worthless children.

It was a role he would have to play perfectly. He had no other choice. His survival in this new and strange environment depended on it. He would not fail. He could not fail. He had come too far to fail now. He would succeed. No matter what it took.
