Chapter 27: School (4)
Adam was alone in his new office. He looked around the small empty room. The silence was deafening. He sat down at the desk. The chair squeaked under his weight. Adam was very nervous.
He had never imagined he would get this job. He had been so sure the principal would reject him. And now he had to teach a class. In less than an hour. He did not know what to do.
He had never done anything like this before. He had managed things at the hotel. He had managed schedules and supplies. But this was completely different. This was managing people. Managing children.
He felt a familiar urge. A coping mechanism he had developed in the last few days. He took his mobile phone out of his pocket. He opened the One-Click Billionaire app.
He started tapping. The rhythmic motion was calming. The sight of the numbers climbing on the screen was a distraction. It was a habit now.
Whenever he felt worried sad or angry he would open this app. He would spend his time here making money. It was his escape.
An hour was almost up. He looked at the clock on his phone. He had been tapping for forty-five minutes straight. He put his phone down.
He felt frustrated with himself. "I’ve spent almost the whole time doing this," he muttered.
"And now what do I do?" He had made one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in those forty-five minutes. The thought was absurd. He had made more money sitting in this office than most of the teachers here would make in a year.
He thought to himself I’ve made so much money in such a short time. Even the teachers here probably don’t earn this much. He wondered why he was even doing this job. He had no shortage of money.
The thought came to him again clear and strong. He should just leave. He should walk out of this school and never come back. Later he would tell Sophia that he already had a job. It was a simple solution.
He stood up from his chair. His decision was made. He walked to the office door. He opened it. He was about to step out. He was about to escape.
But he stopped. He was shocked by what he saw. Right in front of his office was the volleyball court. When he had first entered the office the court had been empty. But now students were slowly starting to gather on it.
They were wearing their gym uniforms. They were carrying volleyballs. Adam started to sweat. He felt his escape route closing. He thought to himself It’s too late. I can’t run away now.
He let out a deep sigh. He leaned against the doorframe for a moment. He closed his eyes. Whatever happens happens, he thought. He had no other choice. He had to face this.
He went back inside his office. He picked up the list of students from his desk. He held it in his hand like a shield. He walked back outside. He saw that all the students had arrived now.
The entire class was assembled on the volleyball court. They were not standing together. They were talking to each other in small separate groups. Adam saw it immediately. This class was divided. There were different cliques. Different factions. This was not going to be easy.
Adam stood at the edge of the court. He saw that some of the students were looking at him with curiosity. They were whispering to each other and glancing in his direction.
But most of the students were completely ignoring him. They were too busy talking to their friends. They acted as if he did not exist.
Adam let out a deep sigh. He thought to himself, This is going to be very hectic. But he was ready. He had to be. He walked forward onto the court. He stood in the middle of the scattered groups of students.
He cleared his throat. "My name is Adam," he said his voice louder than he intended. "And I’m your new PE teacher."
He waited for a reaction. He got nothing.
The students who had been looking at him turned back to their friends. The others continued to ignore him completely.
No one acknowledged his presence.
They were all busy in their own little worlds. Adam felt a surge of frustration and nervousness. His first impression had been a complete failure. He was invisible to them.
He took another deep breath. He thought back to his experience at the hotel. He remembered how he had learned to handle the children of the wealthy guests.
Those children were often spoiled and difficult. He knew that you could not be timid with them. You had to be firm. You had to command their respect.
A smile appeared on his face. It was a cold smile.
He shouted. His voice was a sharp crack of thunder that echoed through the vast coliseum. "Are you all deaf? Can’t you hear what I’m saying?" The sudden loudness of his voice startled the students. They all stopped talking. They all turned to look at him. He had their attention now.
"I didn’t come here for this," Adam continued his voice filled with a cold contempt. "Not for children like you." He looked at his own hands as if he was bored. He stood there with a posture that radiated complete indifference.
"Do you know what important things I left behind for you people?" he said his voice dripping with sarcasm. "I have a very big business. I have millions of dollars on the line. And for what? For worthless children like you."
The students were stunned into silence. They looked at each other with wide eyes. Then they all looked back at Adam. They had never been spoken to like this by a teacher before. They did not know how to react.
They were intrigued. They were a little scared. And for the first time since he had walked onto the court they were all paying attention to him. He had their complete and undivided attention.
And that was exactly what he wanted. He had created a new persona for himself. The rich and powerful businessman who was forced to be here. It was a lie. But it was a lie that might just work. He hoped it would. He had no other plan.
