Chapter 26: School (3)
He felt a new wave of nervousness. He was completely out of his depth here.
He knew nothing about any of these sports. He had never even been in a place like this before. He was an imposter. A fraud.
He felt a strong urge to turn around and run away. To go back to the safety of his small apartment and his money-making app.
But then he thought of Sophia. He thought of her happy and proud face. He could not disappoint her. He had to see this through. He had to at least try. He took a deep breath and followed Isabella further into the vast sports complex.
He had no idea what he was getting himself into. But he was here now. And he would face it. Whatever it was. He would just have to pretend he knew what he was doing.
It was a skill he had learned well over the last few years of his life. He hoped it would be enough to get him through this. He had a feeling it would not be. But he had to try. For Sophia.
Even though it was still early a few students were already practicing on the courts. Adam saw a group of boys playing basketball. They moved with a skill and confidence that made him feel inadequate.
He saw two girls playing a fierce game of badminton. Their movements were fast and precise. Adam watched the students. He felt a deep sense of nervousness.
He knew nothing about these sports. He had never taught anyone anything in his life.
Isabella noticed Adam’s reaction. She saw the worry on his face. She smiled a reassuring smile. "Don’t worry," she said. "The children at our school are very good. If you treat them well I am sure they will give you very good results."
Her words brought Adam’s attention back to her. He looked at Isabella. She seemed so calm and confident. She seemed to belong in this place.
Isabella led Adam to a room inside the coliseum building. It was a small simple office. There was a desk a chair and a locker. "This will be your main office," Isabella said.
"When you have a class your duty will be here and on the grounds both inside and outside." She walked to the desk. She picked up a stack of papers and handed them to Adam.
"For the first year you are being assigned two classes," she said. "Depending on your performance you will be assigned more classes in the future."
Adam’s attention went to the papers in his hand. He looked at the schedule. He saw that he had been assigned two classes. Class 1C and Class 2A.
He stared at the class names. So I have to give physical training to these two classes, he thought. He looked through the papers. He saw the list of student names for each class. The names were just a blur to him. He felt a growing sense of panic.
He had done a lot of management work in his life. He had managed his time his money his three different jobs. He had even done delivery work which required a lot of physical stamina. His physical health was good. He was sure that he was not physically weak. But he was still worried. He knew nothing about teaching. He knew nothing about coaching. He had no idea what he was supposed to do.
Isabella started to leave the office. As she was walking out she turned back to him. "Your first class is going to start in an hour," she said.
Adam’s heart skipped a beat. He looked at the papers again. He saw that his first period was in one hour. With class 1C. The reality of his situation was crashing down on him. He was not just an imposter. He was an imposter who had to perform in one hour.
Isabella saw the look of terror on his face. She gave him another small smile. "All the best," she said. And then she left.
Adam was alone in his new workplace. He gazed around the small, empty room. It felt like a prison cell. He examined the schedule in his right hand. Class 1C. in one hour. He did not know what to do. He could not run away anymore. Sophia was waiting for him. Isabella was expecting him. Ms. Vince was hoping for him. He was trapped.
He sat at his new workstation. He rested his head on his hands. He felt a flood of sadness sweep over him. He would make a huge mistake. He would let jealousy get the best of him.
Now he was suffering the price. He was entirely unprepared for the circumstances. He was going to embarrass himself in front of an entire class.
And in front of Sophia. The prospect of her disappointment was the worst part of all. He felt a profound sense of humiliation. He had hoped to impress her. Instead, he was going to embarrass himself.
He took a deep breath. He needed to calm down. He needed to think. He had an hour. He needed to come up with a plan. He needed to figure out what a PE instructor was supposed to do.
He had to find a method to get through this first class. He was not sure if he could do it. But he had to try. He had no other options. He took another glance at the list of students.
He attempted to learn their names. It was a minor thing. But that was a start. That was all he could do. He started there. He read the names repeatedly. He attempted to visualize their faces. He attempted to prepare himself for the task that awaited him beyond that door. He was not prepared. But he would need to be.
