Chapter 61: DREAMS THAT GOT CRUSHED
"Go home now. Protect the money and don’t give that to any strangers, alright?" Terrence smiled as he helped the kids to hide the money in their pockets.
Sofia and Alex both nodded. They innocently looked at Terrence.
"Are we going to see you again, Mr. Kind?" the two of them asked in unison.
Terrence stared at the kids. He slowly nodded. "Do you know how to use a cellphone?" he curiously asked the two of them. He was unsure since they were still kids and might not have enough knowledge when using those.
Alex and Sofia looked at each other before answering.
"We know how to use that, Mr. Kind. Sofia’s grandpa has one, and we play on it!" Alex answered.
With the answer, Terrence smiled. "Do you have a paper then? I will give you my number so you can message me anytime." He asked them in a soft voice.
Alex and Sofia both shook their heads.
"Hmmm... What will we do then?" Terrence sighed. He only had his phone with him, and he knew for sure that these kids did not know their grandmother’s phone number.
"I have an idea, Mr. Kind!" Sofia came back to where they were earlier before they saw Terrence.
There, Terrence saw a purple backpack on the ground. It was a small backpack that looked dirty and old. Some of its parts already have holes.
Sofia kneeled on the ground, not minding how dirty it was. She opened her backpack and took a pen there.
"I have a pen, Mr. Kind! Just write it on our arms!" Sofia raised her hand, which had a pen on it.
She closed her bag and ran back to Terrence. She offered her arms and nodded repeatedly as if telling Terrence to write on it immediately.
Seeing what his friend was doing, Alex did the same thing. He offered his arms and smiled.
Terrence sighed. It left him no choice. As much as he did not want to write on the skin of the kids, their willingness had left him no choice.
Terrence wrote his number on their skin. He made sure to write it small, just enough for them to see it so that it would not be hard to take off.
When he was done, the kids jumped in joy.
"It was nice meeting you, Mr. Kind!"
"It’s nice meeting you too," Terrence replied as he stood up.
"I need to go now," Terrence waved his hands at the two kids.
"Goodbye, Mr. Kinddd!"
"Mr. Kind, Goodbyieeee!"
Alex and Sofia waved their hands back. They watched Terrence as he slowly walked away from them.
Terrence’s heart warmed after meeting the two kids. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to meet them again, but he was hoping for it.
He couldn’t help but smile as he walked. Some might find him weird, but he did not care about it at the moment.
Terrence continued to walk for more when he noticed a few large construction vehicles going around. As he walked further, he saw that there were a lot of construction men going around.
"What’s going on?" The smile on Terrence’s lips died. His forehead creased as he looked at everything in confusion.
"Is there a construction of a building here?" Terrence reached out to one construction worker on the side.
The worker nodded. "Yes, Sir. A building is designated to be built here." He answered.
"Ohh..." Terrence nodded as he walked away to continue walking.
’If I remember correctly, in my previous life, our area remained undeveloped. How come something like this is happening?" He was confused as he thought about it.
Terrence looked around. His confusion increased when he saw that the building that was supposed to be Edwin’s store couldn’t be seen.
He just saw a building that was being demolished.
"Don’t tell me..." His eyes widened as he thought of it.
Terrence quickly ran towards the construction site. He went to the side where a few people were watching the demolition work.
"Did you hear that the owner of this building went bankrupt?"
"Huh? Wasn’t the store going well after they changed the handler?"
"Yes, but I heard the new owner’s wife got into an accident. She was hit by an unknown car, but the car just ran away! They sold the store to afford the hospital bills."
Hearing what the people were talking about, Terrence found it hard for himself to accept everything.
"It hasn’t even been a long time..." Terrence said in a low voice.
He was deeply shocked by what he heard and learned.
"Shh! Keep your voices low. The owner was just at the back! I heard he hadn’t left this area since yesterday when the demolishing started."
Terrence quickly glanced at his back at what he had heard. He looked to the side and ran towards the back of the building.
Terrence covered his nose. The area was dusty from all the crushed cement and smoke coming from the construction vehicle.
Terence looked around. He was looking for Edwin. It wasn’t long before he saw a man standing at the far back.
"Edwin..." Terrence uttered as he watched him from far away. He decided to walk towards him.
Edwin was standing at the backside. He was looking at how his hard work slowly got crushed in front of his eyes. He was looking at it without any emotions on his face.
He couldn’t feel anything.
Not even sadness, regret, or fury.
He had no time to feel any of that. Or does he even have the right to feel any of that?
Edwin was just staring at the building blankly. This was his everything, except for his family.
He built this grocery store by himself.
This was Edwin’s dream.
Edwin laughed, although there was no humor in it.
His laugh became louder before silence followed afterward. Tears started to flow down his cheeks like a river. They weren’t stopping even though he had wiped them a few times already.
"Where did everything go wrong?" He asked bitterly.
