Chapter 67: How did he escape?

Yano’s eyes darted to the others, who were shifting uneasily, confused about whatever was happening.

They all quickly raised their guards, glancing left and right whether there was another unknown enemy.

"Ratick, what the hell is wrong with you?" one of them said, briefly glancing at the man, who was still coughing blood violently.

"Are we... being affected by the gas somehow?" Yano muttered, his voice tightening. "But we’re not even inside—"

His words stopped.

A blinding flash of light exploded from the far right, bursting out like a sun had cracked open in the sky.

"—Tch!" Yano flinched back, covering his eyes. The light was too intense, burning into his vision, and for a moment, everything went white.

Then—

"He broke out..." Ratick gasped, barely able to speak. "That bastard... escaped!"

As soon as he spoke, his body shuddered, and his eyes turned white.

The item keeping him afloat immediately turned off, and his body dropped from the air to the ground.

Yano’s blood ran cold.

’Escaped?!’ he thought.

Before he could even process the words, an all too familiar voice rang out, sharp and furious.

"YANO!!"

Yano’s eyes widened, snapping toward the light.

Floating above the boss zone, radiating brilliantly with golden light, was Terry, the person he wanted to see the least at the moment.

Yano’s pupils shrank.

"No...!" he hissed, gnashing his teeth. "How...?!"

"Argh!" Viren grunted, his body trembling violently as blood spurted out of his lips.

Then—crack!—a sound like shattering glass echoed through the air.

Yano’s head jerked back toward the boss zone.

Thin, glowing cracks began to appear all across the boss area—like a mirror fracturing under pressure.

The illusionary zone, the cheering players, the clear view, all of them flickered, before shattering into pieces.

The boss zone instantly transformed into a field of poisonous red mist and crumbled bodies, most of which were already disintegrating into white particles.

The few who were alive were violently coughing out blood, before also evaporating into tiny white particles.

And standing in the center was the Crimson Blood Scorpion, its armour shiny and smooth, untouched despite the chaos around it.

Once in a while, it went around, hacking those it could into pieces with its thick, massive tail.

Viren’s eyes were now fully bloodshot. He groaned once more, and his knees buckled.

"Viren!!" Yano shouted.

But it was too late.

Viren’s body dropped like a stone, slamming into the ground just outside the boss zone with a heavy thud.

Yano’s chest tightened.

He grit his teeth so hard it hurt, fury bubbling in his veins. "Damn it...!"

This was the price of using the illusion against someone far stronger than he was. The backlash would be too strong, and his mana would be drained instantly, rendering him useless.

Yano’s hands curled into fists, trembling with rage.

His gaze snapped back to the sky.

Terry hovered above the battlefield, completely still, eyes narrowed.

He was staring down at the chaos below—the bodies, the red mist, the bloodied players dying by the second.

His expression was filled with pity for the dying players, and a deep, seething disgust for Yano, who put them in this condition.

"How could you... do something so inhumane?" he muttered, turning to Yano with his eyes bloodshot from anger and disgust.

Yano’s frown deepened.

His fingers twitched, and his glare sharpened—even as unease crept in from Terry’s sudden appearance.

"...How did you escape?" he muttered, unable to mask the frustration in his voice.

Terry’s eyes darkened even further.

"You approached me," he said coldly, his voice ringing clear in the tense air. "Said we should team up. That we should take down the boss together."

His gaze never left Yano’s face, his tone rising with bitter intensity.

"Only to backstab me. And trap me in that cage."

The disgust in his voice was palpable now, loud enough to make the eight other guild members uneasy beside Yano.

Despite their numbers, they couldn’t help but dread a fight with Terry.

He only just appeared, yet two out of them were already knocked out. What if he actually went all out against them, how were they even supposed to fight against someone like that?

"Did you really think that’d be enough to stop me?" Terry growled, his golden aura flaring slightly. "How pathetic."

Yano’s eyes narrowed further, hiding the storm brewing behind them.

"So... you broke out," he said, feigning calm as he stared back at him. "I don’t know how you did it. And honestly... I don’t care."

But even he knew that was a lie, and deep within, fear stirred within his stomach.

Because Terry was right.

He had gone to him—just minutes before the boss raid began. With a smile, a handshake, and a speech full of hollow promises.

He told Terry they’d make a great team. That their talents would perfectly complement each other. That he trusted him more than anyone.

And Terry, believing his words, had let his guard down during their conversation.

That had been just enough, for Yano to make a single signal with his fingers.

And the moment he did, Ratick moved, activating his talent witnoit hesitation.

[Master Warden] — an A-rank talent designed for suppression and capture.

The ability allowed the user to instantly manifest a reinforced, magical prison around a designated target or targets.

It wasn’t just an ordinary prison, it severed the flow of mana within its prisons, and warped the space around to make escape impossible.

Even powerful monsters could be held in place for several minutes inside one.

However, just like Viren’s talent, trapping those far powerful than him could result in a backlash.

If any of his prisoners also managed to break out of the prison, it could also result in another backlash.

Their plan had been simple, and was supposed to be effective.

Trap Terry. Keep him locked away until the boss raid was over. Then spin a tale about how he’d unfortunately vanished right before the battle started.

Everything was supposed to go perfectly.

Until it didn’t.

Now, the man supposed to be imprisoned by Ratick was floating before him, covered in golden light, glaring down with hatred in his eyes and judgment in his voice.

And worse still—he had shattered the illusion. Exposed everything.

Yano’s hand curled into a fist at his side. But his heartbeat kept pounding within his chest, louder and faster. Because despite all his bluff, despite his composed face...

Terry had broken out of the Master Warden’s cage.

And that changed everything.

’How the hell did he even escape?!’ he thought, still confused about the whole thing.

Ratick’s talent might be A-rank, but it was capable of trapping even those more powerful than him.

There should have been no way for Terry to escape, especially with his mana severed.

He had even taken Terry’s monstrous strength into consideration, feeling that even if he eventually broke out in his own, it should be after they had already completed their plan, and defeated the monster boss.

He wasn’t supposed to break out this fast, and appear in front of them this fast also!

’Terry the Hero... just who the hell are you?’ Yano thought, his brows furrowing in agitation.
