Chapter 55: A strange girl

’Whatever...’ he thought, slowly rising to his feet.

His muscles still ached slightly, feeling a bit stiff, but he ignored it.

"I shouldn’t just stay here..." he muttered under his breath. "Or I might get attacked."

He narrowed his eyes.

Most of the players were gathered in the heart of the village, their chatter mostly revolving around one name.

Terry.

The one who had "defeated the hungry demon."

The one who’d fought him.

A strange glint flashed across his eyes as he thought about it, and he sighed.

’I’ve always wanted to compare myself to you... but not like this.’

He exhaled, taking a step forward.

Then the world around him suddenly spun.

The ground tilted, and his body gave out, collapsing on the ground.

In mere moments, everything went dark.

*

A warm breeze brushed across Riley’s face, and he slowly opened his eyes, letting out a low grunt.

His head darted to the side, only to realise he was still lying down.

However, it wasn’t on the dirt anymore, but on a soft, oddly comfortable carpet.

The carpet was neatly spread on the grass, and the more he laid on it, the more he felt all his unease go away.

But then, he couldn’t let him guard down, and he quickly sat up.

"What...?" he muttered.

His body ached far less now, and all the fatigue he felt earlier had gone completely.

From his surroundings, he could tell he was still in the northern exit of the novice village, but this wasn’t where he lost consciousness.

Someone had moved him, laid him down here, but he had no idea who or why.

His eyes narrowed.

"You’re awake, Ran." A soft, feminine voice suddenly came from his side.

Riley’s head snapped toward the direction of the voice, his face squeezing into a slight frown.

His gaze met that of a girl sitting quietly on a similar carpet just a few meters from him.

She was beautiful.

Her long, curly brown hair shimmered gently, each curl falling smoothly over her shoulders and back.

A pair of bright blue eyes met his—so clear they almost seemed to glow. Her face was round and delicate, with full lips curled into a warm, inviting smile. It was the kind of face that could put anyone at ease.

But Riley wasn’t anyone.

His eyes didn’t stay on her face for long. Something else had caught his attention, a monster perched on her shoulder, moving ever so slightly.

It was no larger than the size of a palm, and its entire body was smooth and laced with tiny, black scales.

Its head was buried in the crevice of her neck, and a small, whip-like tail flicked lazily behind it.

It didn’t look threatening, but its presence was unusual enough that Riley immediately narrowed his eyes.

[Monster Summon]

A strange glint passed through Riley’s eyes.

’So... she’s a Summoner.’

The small tag confirmed it. Only players who possessed a Summoning-type skill or talent could bring monsters into the world like this.

But unlike wild monsters, summon creatures didn’t have their name, level, or health bar visible above them.

Only the summoner could see that information. To everyone else, they were just another creature.

That alone made them quite dangerous, and unpredictable.

However, summoners were known to be lacking when it came to physical attributes, which was why they had to rely heavily on their monster summons.

Those who were unlucky to have a weak summon would practically become useless in fights, and would be at a great disadvantage.

Riley’s gaze lingered on the girl’s summon for a while, and he couldn’t deny it looked very weak.

But then, one couldn’t judge a monster by its size alone, because the most dangerous of them usually had deceiving appearances.

He turned back to the girl, and he suddenly remembered what she called him seconds ago.

Ran.

She had called him Ran.

His brows furrowed.

’Who is that supposed to be?’ he thought, confused why she would call him that.

"Are you better now?" Her soft voice wafted into his ears once again.

She shifted slightly on the mat, blinking slowly at Riley.

Riley didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he quickly rose up on his feet, preparing himself for anything that might happen.

He met her gaze directly, coldly.

The girl might have a really calming presence, but that was exactly why he felt so uneased.

People like that were usually good in hiding their true intentions, which he had found out the hard way many times in his past life.

No matter what, he wouldn’t fall for something like that again.

"Who’s Ran?" he asked.

The girl let out a soft, wry chuckle.

"There’s no need to be so on edge," she said, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Ran’s just short for your ID. ’A Random,’ right?"

Riley’s eyes narrowed, surprised, and at the same time confused at her words.

The girl, still oblivious to the change in his expression chuckled to herself before continuing: "Honestly, I was a bit surprised when I saw it. Why would you go with something like that as your player ID?"

Riley’s brow twitched sharply.

His eyes widened.

"You...?" he muttered, voice low. "Can really see my ID?"

For a few seconds, he simply stood there in shock, trying to process what he’d just heard.

That shouldn’t be possible.

Every single player he’d met up till now hadn’t been able to see his player ID, which was the main reason some referred to him as a hacker.

Because to them, where a normal ID should’ve appeared above his head, there had only been a bunch of question marks.

No one could even see his level, or his H/P, as they were all completely blank to those that tried.

At first, he found it very strange also, but eventually, he just accepted it.

From his talent to his status window, nothing about him was normal in the first place.

So he simply accepted that he wasn’t supposed to be ’readable’, that he was just some sort og glitch character within [Apocalypse].

And yet, this girl had just spoken his ID aloud without hesitation.

If she could see that...

Then it wasn’t a stretch to think she could also see the rest—his level, his H/P, and worse of all... his SSS-rank talent!
