Chapter 94: Chapter 94: Team Composition

"The next creature is of a lower rank but it has some nasty abilities that makes it a pain to deal with."

"The creature resembles a fusion between a panther and a chameleon and has a higher level of camouflage than the lizardmen. Not only can it blend into its environment by modifying its skin color, it can also mimic the sounds around it. One of the scouts was ambushed by one while resting in what he thought was the relaxing ambience of the forest."

When everyone heard this, their mood slightly dipped but Gwen quickly cleared it up.

"Luckily, the creature’s strength was only Rank one and the scout was able to fight back. However, the creature’s bite seems to be poisonous as the scout fell terribly ill soon after. Thankfully mana seems to be able to purge the poison from our body so as long as you have enough mana, you’ll be fine."

Hearing this the group felt relieved that the scout was fine, but when they heard that the creature was also poisonous, they all felt dead inside.

Landur gave a dry laugh as he said, "Haha... not only do we have to deal with a tribe of rank two beasts capable of wielding weapons, we also have to deal with a poisonous ambusher. Just our luck."

Thinking of this, Landur looked over to Lake with a pitiful gaze.

"Looks like your first hunt is going to be a tough one, first year."

As Landur was speaking, Gwen sat down as she used her wristwatch to create a 3D holographic map in front of everyone.

"This is the map of the area where the two beasts were spotted. The Lizardmen tracks leave the scouts estimating them to be traveling south, heading towards a nearby mountain. The Ambush Fang, name given to the panther-like creature, seems to be heading east towards the woods, and a few miles west is the location of Moonbright City."

As Gwen spoke, Landur and the others paid close attention. After all, this was no time to joke around like they usually do.

This information would be crucial to whether their hunt succeeded or not, but most importantly, whether they got their points or not.

Gwen went on to explain a few more details about the environment and started discussing some strategies with the rest of the group.

Lake stood by and listened closely. This was going to be his first time actually fighting with a team of other hunters so everything was quite a novel experience.

As the group discussed strategy, Gwen finally looked over to Lake.

"Before we continue with further discussion, I believe everyone should know each other’s specialties so that everyone can work much more efficiently in the future, right?"

Gwen’s question seemed to remind everyone that there was a new person in their group as they all looked over.

Seeing everyone gaze on him, Lake smiled lightly as he spoke calmly, "That would indeed be quite helpful. Since I’m the new one here, I’ll give my introduction first."

"I’m Lake, a first year student. My fitness index is around the pinnacle of Martial Apprentice but I specialize in single target assassination, stealth and scouting. I’m also slightly versed in ranged combat as well."

Hearing Lake’s introduction, everyone was satisfied with his attitude but when they heard him say that he specialized in scouting, they couldn’t help but be curious.

Hana was the first to ask, "You specialize in scouting?"

"Indeed, I have an acute sense of the environment around me and that was why when I heard that this time we would be up against creatures specializing in stealth, I felt like this task was made for me."

"You’re that confident in your scouting abilities?" Jayce asked with a slightly raised eyebrow. They were all experienced when it came to hunting and the type of enemy they hated to fight the most was one that specialized in stealth.

This was because these creatures required them to always be on guard in case of potential ambush and would also have to spend time actively searching for them which would often prolong their hunts by a few days.

If they could reduce the chance of ambush and the time it takes to track them down, the pressure on them would be greatly reduced and the efficiency of their hunt would be greatly increased!

Lake only smiled at Jayce’s question and after seeing that everyone was also looking over curiously, he spoke in a calm tone, "In the next few seconds, three people are going to walk through that door."

"They’ll enter in 3, 2, 1."

As Lake finished his countdown, the door to the lounge opened as three people walked in. They were dressed in the uniform of staff. Although the lounge was built mainly for the third years, the staff of the various facilities would often come here to relax in their free time as the environment was quite nice.

"...."

Gwen and everyone else looked over slightly stunned but soon they all quickly recovered as they spoke out happily.

"Hahaha! I knew allowing you to join was worth it! Hahaha, with you, this hunt will be a piece of cake!" Landur laughed out loud as he leaned back on the sofa with a relaxed and content smile on his face.

"My friend, if you ever encounter any difficulties when it comes to learning fist arts, don’t be afraid to contact me. I’ll give my absolute best to teach you everything I know, so don’t you dare leave this team." Jayce spoke solemnly as he rested his hand on Lake’s shoulder, but in reality, he was simply trying to make sure Lake doesn’t run away in the future to join another team. After all, scouts were extremely rare among the third years.

This wasn’t because training to become one was hard or anything like that, but just that simply no one among the third years was interested in training to become a scout! The training can be described as both simple and repetitive as the main way of training was through repeated practices, which helps to enhance your overall awareness and senses overtime. However, this usually takes a decent amount of time out of a students practice time and with how the academy was pushing them for points to graduate, a lot of students were forced to drop the idea of training to become one even if they knew how useful the skill was.

Eventually, this led to a situation where any creature that specialized in stealth, had now become the bane of the existence known as the "Legendary Generation" to the outside world.

"That’s right, first year! You said you were also slightly versed in ranged combat. I’m not trying to brag but I’m one of the best archers among the third years. Hell, I can even compete with the instructors a little in terms of archery. If there is anything you need, just ask your big sister!"

Hana spoke with a confident smile but Lake only felt a slight headache when he looked at it. It reminded him too much of a certain unreliable sister, especially with her last two words.

Gwen smiled slightly as she also started to introduce the rest of the team to Lake.

Landur was a finesse type fighter, specializing in fighting in and out of close combat with his sword while also being skilled in movement techniques.

Jayce was also a close combat fighter, but instead of finesse, he used overwhelming strength to overwhelm his enemies and control the position of the monsters through careful positioning of his body as he specialized in grappling and fist techniques.

Next was Hana, the group’s archer and only ranged attacker. She used a bow and usually stayed hidden and out of sight of the monsters, picking off the ones that escaped the defensive net set up by Jayce and Landur, the two frontline defenders.

Finally, was Gwen, the team leader and also the strongest among them in terms of fitness index, ranking as a Mid Rank Martial Warrior close to advancing to High Rank.

Much like Landur, she also specialized in swordsmanship and movement techniques, however, if compared to Landur, the two of them were on completely different levels in terms of control and skills.

Not only could Gwen fight large numbers of monsters by herself, her control over mana allowed her to use it to its maximum efficiency while also possessing an incredibly accurate sense of judgment in the amount of force she needed to use when attacking to make sure she didn’t use too much mana when fighting.

Because of this, each of her attacks were extremely light but actually contained exactly enough force to finish off her opponent, creating the visual sight of one strike, one kill.

Once they had all finished introducing themselves and their main specialties, they discussed everyone’s primary roles during the operation as well as a sub role to fill in as well.

Lake was the group’s main scout and was responsible for detecting enemies ahead of time and gathering information on them that could lend an extra hand to the team before they launch an attack.

His sub role, which was the role he played during combat, was assassin. His job was to simply finish off any injured or retreating enemies while passively taking out the targets that stayed far from the main group of enemies, hopefully easing the pressure on the frontline in the process, which was made up of Landur and Jayce.

Everyone else’s roles were more or less in line with their skills and proficiencies. Landur was supporting damage, responsible for supporting Jayce who acted as the main tank responsible for controlling the position and overall movement of the enemy.

Hana was the ranger, targeting enemies far from the group or ones that posed the most threat to the frontline.

Gwen was like a trump card for the group thanks to her overwhelming skill and power and played the role of flank which meant that her main responsibility was to cut off the enemies’ retreat.

With everyone’s roles settled, the meeting ended fairly simply. Lake was told that they would be departing early tomorrow so he should take the chance to prepare.

After bidding farewell to the group, Lake had planned to return to his dorm to create some "homework" for the students who signed up for his lessons to complete before he came back.

However, on his way out of the third year block, he received a message from Kate informing him that the materials he wanted had arrived.
