Chapter 81: Silver Veil
Chapter 81: Chapter 81: Silver Veil
Soon the first class went by smoothly.
Despite the class being mandatory, Lake paid no attention to it and instead opted for putting the last touches on the Mana Circulation Skill, which he had promptly renamed Mana Heart after considering the workings of it.
The technique worked by turning Lake’s heart into his absorption path through a set of intricately inscribed formations allowing him to constantly absorb and refine mana without him having consciously to focus on it, effectively achieving the status of passive accumulation.
Once the mana enters through his heart, it follows along a modified flow path through his veins and arteries, infusing into his blood similar to the previous Mana Circulation Skill way of doing it.
Lake spent most of the last day working on the creation of the formations so all that was left now was to rework the flow path so that he could maximize the mana storage in his body.
As the class finished and Lake prepared to leave, he saw the door fly open as an unfamiliar yet familiar figure walked in.
Lake was sure he had never seen this person’s face before but he remembered it from someone’s fate.
He was tall and had short brown hair with slightly tanned skin.
Lake saw that once the student entered, he walked straight to Kate.
"Kate! I heard you broke through to the Martial Warrior Realm. I came by to congratulate you." The tall student spoke with a small smirk.
Kate, seeing this sighed, "Zeke, If you wanted to congratulate me you could have just messaged me through the wrist band. There was no need for you to come all the way here."
When Lake heard Kate’s response to the sudden intrusion of the new student, Lake instantly remembered where he knew the guy from.
This man was Zeke Morningstar, the son of one of the top three leading guilds on the continent, Hell’s Paradise, and also a childhood friend of Kate. Lake remembered him because he saw him pestering Kate a few times when they were younger.
Although their relationship couldn’t be described as close, they still held a cordial relationship with each other and often kept in touch. Although it seemed that Kate had been keeping her distance from him as of late.
Lake also remembered him as the arrogant clown who tried to slap him on his head while he was pretending to be asleep in class.
If it wasn’t for Bradford intervening on time, Lake felt that he would have beaten Zeke there and then to end the matter.
Looking at the beaming clown now, Lake watched as he continued to congratulate Kate and ask about her advancement and her new found strength, even offering to spar with her to help her get accustomed to her new strength.
When Kate heard this, she thought for a bit before replying.
"Sure, I don’t mind sparring with you but are you sure? I remember you only being a High Rank Martial Apprentice. Although I don’t mean to sound arrogant, I’m already considered a Martial Warrior."
"It’s fine, I won’t go down that easily against a Martial Warrior. Besides, what Rank are you anyway?"
"I haven’t had the chance to test my rank yet. I was planning on testing it today in fact."
Originally she had planned to test her rank today and then challenge Lake for a spar. Lake’s overpowering strength when she sparred with him the first time had left a mental mark on her and although the scar had faded with him helping her so much, it was still there and she really wanted to get rid of it as soon as possible.
However, if she could get a chance to refine her skills a bit more before the rematch, she would gladly take it.
Lake saw this and got up ready to leave. After observing Zeke’s fate, Lake found nothing interesting. His father’s guild may as well be the only thing interesting about him but Zeke never interacted too much with the inner workings of the guild so Lake wasn’t able to find anything useful from watching him.
Instead, he could still earn a few more academy points by attending some classes.
Right now he had roughly 1000 points, 5 times less than what was required to graduate at the end of this year but after the academy’s upcoming events, Lake doubted that the situation would remain the same for much longer.
Thinking of this, Lake had another headache on his mind as he exited the classroom. Besides worrying about the quest, he also has to make sure he graduates.
Bam!
A loud collision rang out as Lake walked into someone upon exiting the classroom.
This left Lake momentarily dazed as he stepped back. His sixth sense normally warned him of anything around him so Lake never had to pay attention to where he walked before.
Looking up Lake saw a head full of long beautiful silver hair.
"Ouch... Did I walk into a steel pole or something."
Gwen spoke out as she rubbed her head. She didn’t have her mana protecting her body so the unexpected collision was quite painful even with her enhanced physique.
She came over looking to catch a glimpse at the newly awakened Martial Warrior among the first years but who knew her luck would be so bad.
Looking up, she confirmed that it wasn’t a steel beam but a young man she had walked into.
"Sorry-"
"Sorry-"
They both tried to apologize at the same time causing them to pause again in momentary awkwardness.
Lake pretended to cough to clear his throat as he spoke, "Sorry, it was my bad, I wasn’t watching where I was going."
Lake apologized first as it was really his fault for relying on his sixth sense too much.
"It’s nothing- I meant- Ouch... It was also my fault, but are you made out of steel or something? I felt like I walked into a metal wall."
Lake smiled drily in response as he took a glance at the fate of the person he had just bumped into.
Seeing that it was seemingly a blue fate in the shape of a sword, Lake’s expression changed subtly but no one noticed.
"It’s nothing, I just did a little bit of body strengthening exercises."
After speaking, Lake got out of the way and gestured for her to walk forward before leaving.
"Well then, if you’ll excuse me."
Seeing Lake walk away, Gwen wondered what that was about.
...
After walking away and seeing that Gwen didn’t follow him, Lake breathed a sigh of relief.
The reason why he was in such a hurry to leave was because of the simple looking sword shape fate.
Usually, a person’s fate was in the state of a white strand. When someone absorbs mana into their body, it changes into a blue colored strand and only once they advanced to the Martial Warrior would that strand take form into a unique shape.
That’s why when Lake saw Gwen’s simple sword shaped fate, he knew that the person in front of him was at least a Martial Warrior.
However, this was only one of the reasons why Lake decided to move away in a hurry.
When Lake tried to observe that seemingly ordinary fate, what Lake got in return was a shroud of silver acting as a preventative cover, protecting the fate from his prying eyes.
This had thrown Lake off and caused him to immediately retreat.
After all, Lake preferred to only interact with people who he knew or at least had prior information on. That’s why someone like Gwen who he couldn’t see through at all and had nothing on often left him unsettled.
Remembering the unique silver hair, Lake had an inkling as to the identity of the Martial Warrior but didn’t linger too much on it.
Even though she was a Martial Warrior and could potentially be a great ally for Lake, she was still useless to his current quest.
After all, the system estimated that the disaster would strike the academy in a year. At that point, that person would most likely have graduated.
Although, Lake must admit he was interested in the silver veil that covered her fate.
Thinking of this, Lake suddenly realized something.
"A Silver veil covers the fate of the Silverveil Princess... Heh, coincidence or not?"
...
In the training hall of the academy, a crowd had gathered around one of the testing halls.
Inside the hall, Kate was currently looking at the various machines to test her fitness index. Depending on the result, she could identify where she stood among Martial Warriors in terms of Rank.
In front of her lay a familiar strength testing machine. It only tested punching power but that was usually enough to determine someone’s standing among martial artists.
Zeke looked on from the side. He knew Kate from a young age and had always secretly admired her, but recently she had gotten a lot more distanced and it had been pissing him off a lot. Especially since she called him an acquaintance around a week ago in front of a crowd.
But seeing that she was willing to interact with him today, his mood was over the moon as he casually hummed a small tune.
"Give it your best shot!" He casually said as he looked over from the side.
Kate rolled her eyes at his words.
She had known about Zeke’s feelings for a long time but she wasn’t interested which made her keep her distance from him thinking he would take the hint and cool off after some time apart but seeing that he didn’t, she knew that something would have to be done eventually.
With her astral mana surging through her body, Kate got into the standard punching position. For now she would just focus on the test, she could deal with Zeke another time.
As the astral mana spread through her body, Kate felt her muscles surge with strength. She wasn’t testing for her maximum destructive power but just her regular body enhancement state, that’s why she didn’t gather the mana in her hand but spread it throughout her entire body.
With wave after wave of astral mana spreading out from the universe in the center of her body, Kate whipped her hand forward when she felt that it reached a point where it couldn’t be spread out any further.
At this point the astral mana had created a layer of energy around her entire body giving the illusion of countless stars floating around her.
As her fist passed through the air, a noticeable vibration of the air was seen as the astral mana displaced the air particles in front of her causing her fist to fly faster than the speed of sound.
BANG!!
BOOM!!
Two distinct explosions were heard as the punching machine jumped back from the recoil of Kate’s punch, causing her to be shocked by her own explosive power.
After the machine took its time to adjust and calculate the value, Kate saw a row of numbers spread across the distance screen with a line of text below it.
[Strength Index: 23.024]
[Martial Warrior High Rank!]
When the machine finished its announcement, both Kate and everyone in the crowd were stunned.
Zeke, who was previously humming a tune, instantly regretted his decision to ask for a spar.
After a brief moment, Kate suddenly remembered something and turned to the crowd of students that were watching from a distance.
Pulling out her wrist band’s interface, she set it to public display before showing the advertisement for the training course in a silent exhibition of its effects.
