Chapter 74: Chapter 74: Maxed Out Arcane Knowledge
The familiar darkness and numbness overwhelmed Lake’s sense once more as an incredible amount of information began to pour into his head.
Thankfully, Lake’s advanced physique allowed him to endure the skull splitting headache.
When the process finally ended, Lake reopened his eyes as a system notification appeared before him.
[Arcane Knowledge lv 2 - A mage should be able to understand the principles of magic in order to research old, and create new spells and magical techniques. At the current level, you have an intermediate grasp of the principles of magic and can analyze and research old spells and techniques.]
Reading the system prompt, Lake truly felt that his world view had changed with the upgrade of the skill. Many spell formulas, magical knowledge, mana theory and formations that he never thought of before now exist in his mind as if he had studied it for hundreds of years.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Lake began to comb through the new knowledge in his head, trying to figure out how he could use it to get the best out of his current situation.
After around five minutes, Lake managed to sort out most of the information in his head and some new paths really did appear in his head on how he could make rapid progress.
However, Lake still felt that all these methods were too uncertain. If he truly tried to implement them, he would definitely be able to make noticeable progress with the quest, but whether or not he would be able to complete it within the one year time period was still up for debate.
Lake didn’t trust such uncertainties and reopened the status screen.
Arcane Knowledge lv2 (3000 RP to upgrade)
Looking at the giant leap in price to upgrade the skill Lake felt his heart sink but he gritted his teeth and went through with it.
Now was not the time to be stingy with his points.
[Detected Host has chosen to upgrade Arcane Knowledge skill, does the host wish to proceed?]
Confirm!
[3000 RP points have been deducted.]
[Beginning upgrade...]
Before Lake could even readjust his mind after experiencing the skill upgrade once, his vision once again went dark as a new wave of information started pouring into his head again.
This time, the information flowing into his mind was far more intense than before as Lake felt his mind splitting and stretching to make room to store the large amount of information streaming into it.
On the outside, changes were taking place in Lake’s body. His eyes were undergoing a subtle transformation as a blue light began to shine deep within them as an intricate formation was slowly being carved within the eye. If it wasn’t for the fact that he closed his eyes when he confirmed the upgrade, everyone in the classroom would have noticed the sudden change.
After what felt like an eternity passed, Lake slowly opened his eyes as small drops of sweat slid down his forehead. A blue light briefly flashed through his eyes before disappearing as if it wasn’t even there in the first place.
The process of upgrading the Arcane Knowledge skill was on the level of acquiring a new role with the amount of information that was poured into his brain.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Lake looked around him only to realize that the world around him had completely changed, or more accurately, the way he perceived it.
Looking around, Lake could see the once serious Instructor that was lecturing in front of the class had an additional layer of what looked like blue threads flowing through his body like a gushing river. Some of the students also had threads flowing through them but on a much smaller scale than the professor while some students had small blue balls floating inside their body. There were also students who had their entire body covered in a layer of blue like a protective sheet.
Without fully understanding what he was seeing due to his head still being muddled, Lake looked to the system for an explanation.
[Arcane Knowledge lv 3 (Maxed) - A mage should be able to understand the principles of magic in order to research old, and create new spells and magical techniques. At the current level, you have an advanced grasp of the principles of magic and can see through the magical world with just a glance. Additionally you can analyze and research old, and create new spells and techniques.]
Looking at the updated skill, Lake suddenly understood why the world looks so different.
See through the magical world with just a glance!
When Lake looked up again, he suddenly understood everything he was seeing.
Those small blue threads or balls that were inside every students’ body was mana! Thanks to the upgraded skill, Lake could now see the mana flowing through everyone and judging from the skill description, Lake would most likely see a lot more than the mana in a person if he went out looking for it.
Looking at the students that had a little bit of mana flowing through them like a dried up puddle, and then turning his head to the teacher who had mana flowing through him like a rushing river, Lake suddenly understood something.
It seems that the denser the amount of mana in the body, the stronger the martial artist! Looking at the difference between a student and the instructor, Lake was once again amazed at the difference between student and teacher.
Taking a deep breath and wiping the sweat from his forehead, Lake started to sort through the second batch of information.
By the time he was done, the lecture had already finished. Because he was focused on upgrading the skill, Lake didn’t listen to the lecture one bit so to make sure he didn’t miss anything too important, he quickly glanced through another person’s fate and memorized everything he needed to know.
After that, he started making his way to the cafeteria while his future plan was finally starting to take shape in his head.
With the addition of the maxed level Arcane Knowledge skill, Lake’s reservoir of knowledge had expanded to an unprecedented level. Lake doubted that there was anyone in this world that could match his knowledge on mana which once again reinforced the power of the system in Lake’s mind.
Right now, Lake felt that he could create some pretty amazing things with the knowledge in his head, but before he could start working on those amazing things, he had to start working on the quest.
Reaching the cafeteria, Lake bought the basic lunch sample with one academy point and looked around for his target.
After searching for a while, he eventually found it as he walked up with a smile. Sitting down, he looked across from him at the black haired beauty that was eating a simple meal.
"Hey~ Kate."
Instantly, the spoon in Kate’s hand fell as she felt a shiver up her spine. Looking at the smiling devil in front of her, she really wanted to cry.
Shakily, Kate picked back up her spoon before asking uncomfortably, "What do you want now?"
Lake didn’t speak for a while but only silently observed Kate.
Watching his gaze fly all over her body, Kate’s face turned dark as she strongly gripped the spoon in her hand, bending it out of shape.
"Calm down, Kate. Listen to reason. He is definitely stronger than you right now. Don’t pick a fight you will only regret. If he wants to observe, just let him observe, it’s not like you’re not used to it. But, I must say, this is the first time someone was so bold as to do it in front of my face..."
Kate’s anger was only barely being held back in front of Lake. She tried to ignore Lake and continued to eat but the bastard kept observing for five minutes straight!
"How the hell am I supposed to eat when someone is staring at me so boldly?!"
When Kate was finally about to burst Lake finally moved after all this time. Looking at Lake who sat back in a relaxed manner with a casual smile, Kate wanted to flip the table and shout, "Bastard! Are you finally satisfied after observing me so intensely that you can kick back and relax now?!"
However, before Kate got to that point, Lake finally spoke.
"You practice a sort of technique that absorbs mana through the palms of the hands and the crown of the head. The mana flows through the body through the meridians and stores it within the meridian system."
When Kate heard Lake’s words, her anger instantly vanished as a dazed look appeared on her face.
"The mana flows from the palms through the arms before gathering at your core. When the energy within the core has been stabilized, mana- no, some type of unique energy is absorbed from the crown of the head and mixes in with the mana. How interesting."
As Lake spoke, he finally started to eat his meal.
At this point, Kate was staring at Lake with a look of horror. Each word Lake spoke was spot on, even the part where he stated it was a unique energy absorbed from the crown of her head.
But therein lies the problem, that information is top secret information within her family as it’s their Blackheart family’s unique mana circulation technique!
The Stellar Fusion Technique, a technique that absorbs the energy of the stars and moons before infusing it with your mana, allowing each of your attacks to resonate with the celestial bodies in the sky, releasing boundless power.
It was this same technique that allowed her father to climb all the way to the Peak of Martial Grandmaster while only being in his early fifties. If nothing goes wrong, he should be able to reach the Martial Lord Realm and become one of the few hundred Lords within the entire continent, skyrocketing their guild up the rankings!
However, this technique was kept extremely confidential and not even the Absorption Path was known to others, yet Lake was able to so easily point it out after a few glances?
Does this make sense? What kind of demon would one have to be to figure out her family’s top secret technique with just a glance?
Looking at Lake, Kate’s face had already darken deeply as she struggled to keep her cool.
After Lake swallowed a mouthful of food, he looked up to Kate’s dark expression.
"Don’t look at me like that. It’s just some casual information I gathered from sensing the mana density concentrated deeply in the palms of your hand and crown of your head. I could roughly figure out the Flow Path from observing the way you circulate mana throughout your body and used the knowledge I knew of the meridian system to figure out the specifics. I don’t know anything about the specifics of your technique or how to use it."
Lake spoke calmly as he ate. His words slightly eased Kate’s expression but she still kept her guard up. If Lake had really known her family’s techniques, it would have most likely ended in a battle to the death against Lake as each family’s techniques were all precious treasures to those in the martial arts circles.
Thinking about it from another standpoint, maybe Lake really did figure it out from observing the mana in her body. Although she knew it was difficult, high level martial artists could send the mana out of their bodies to sense the mana in others around them.
Although Lake wasn’t a high level martial artist, he was enough of a monster for Kate to believe this to be the reason. Besides, Kate didn’t believe that someone could learn all about her technique from just looking at her mana densities.
In fact, it really was impossible for Lake to know the specifics of the technique by just relying on the observation of mana that he did with the Magic Eye, a name Lake came up with on the fly for his ability to see mana.
However, what Kate didn’t know was that Lake had already observed her fate and knew everything about her family’s techniques and even some personal secrets. Of course, Lake wasn’t evil enough to go out of his way to expose these secrets. However, if benefits were involved...
Swallowing another mouthful of food, Lake continued, "Look, I’ll be upfront, I want two things from you and am willing to give you something in return."
Hearing Lake finally stating what he wants, Kate relaxed a little more and listened closely to his words.
"The first thing I want is to use your influence again. I need your help to convince the students to join something I’m going to start in the near future."
Hearing Lake’s words, Kate felt that this was something reasonable. Depending on what he was starting, Kate could easily fulfill this requirement. Of course, it still depended on what Lake gave her in return. She wasn’t friendly enough to give something for free.
"The second thing relates to what I am giving in return."
Hearing this, Kate’s interest was piqued. What could he want and give at the same time?
"I want you, specifically, I want to train you."
Hearing the first half of Lake’s words, Kate was slightly disgusted, but hearing the second part of his words left her shivering in fear as the gaze from those icy blue eyes sent PTSD-like flashbacks crashing through her very soul.
