Chapter 75: Chapter 75: Modifying the Technique

Kate shivered as she desperately tried to regain her calm. But no matter how hard she tried, the memory of Lake’s nightmarish limit training kept flashing through her mind, leaving her shaking in her seat.

Seeing this, Lake only smiled. Although he didn’t intend for Kate to be so afraid of him when he trained her, he somehow found himself enjoying the subtle fear emanating from her.

"Does that make me a sadist?" Lake couldn’t help but wonder to himself.

"Look, there really is no need to be so afraid of my training. If it makes you feel any better, the limit training from before was a one time thing cause I couldn’t think of any other way to strike a deal with you."

Hearing Lake’s words, Kate somehow managed to grit her teeth and calm down. Taking a deep breath, she looked at Lake with her amber eyes as a thoughtful gaze appeared on her face.

"I never said I was afraid of your training. It’s just that the physical trauma was too much for my body to bear and I’m still recovering."

"However, if it’s not limit training that you’re offering, what training can you possibly offer me that I can’t receive through the Instructors of the Academy or my guild?"

"Hmm, I can offer you a lot in fact." Lake casually replied as he ate another bite from his plate.

"But I don’t think you’re someone who would be interested in any normal training I could give you so I’ll give you something you definitely can’t find no matter where you look."

Kate continued to listen to Lake as he ate another mouthful of food before speaking. Seeing how casual he was being around her, Kate felt her eye twitch.

Remembering how much she struggled to eat a few minutes ago when Lake was watching her, Kate felt slightly irritated.

After swallowing, Lake raised his head to look at Kate once more.

"Like I said before, you practice a technique that absorbs two types of energy before mixing them together. One type is mana that is absorbed from the palms of your hands and the other is some other energy that is absorbed from the crown of your head."

Kate nodded her head in agreement. Although she was still surprised that Lake managed to figure out all of this information from just observation, she must agree that everything that he had said so far was accurate.

"However, this is where the problem starts. Your technique requires you to mix the two types of energy once they gather at your core. Since you absorb the mana first before absorbing the second energy, when it comes time to mix the two together, the process is extremely slow. This is the first problem with your technique."

"This is indeed the case." Kate nodded her head in agreement. It’s no secret that mana was an extremely domineering energy that often overwhelmed other energy types. Because of this, when mixing any other energy source with mana, if the energy doesn’t dissipate under the pressure of the mana, it could only be slowly mixed together.

"Secondly, I’m not sure what type of energy you’re mixing with the mana, but whatever it is, it also seems to be an equally dominant energy type leading to two types of energy clashing against each other when mixing. This often makes your practices slightly painful and uncomfortable. Because of this, you can only practice for a short period of time otherwise the pain will only continue to increase until it becomes unbearable."

This time, Kate felt her heart clench. Every time Lake said something that would other times be considered top secret so casually, Kate felt like she would have a heart attack listening to him.

However, now she was trying to figure out what Lake was trying to lead her on to. So far he had only been talking about the problems relating to her technique. These were all known facts and even her father couldn’t figure out a method to solve these inherent problems within the technique.

"There are some other problems with your technique but the ones I just listed are considered the major ones."

After finishing his last spoonful of food, Lake placed down his spoon on the tray before leaning back on his seat.

"Am I right with my analysis?"

"Indeed, these are considered the major problems with the technique. However, what do these problems have to do with your training?"

"Everything. As you already know, circulating and absorbing mana is widely accepted as a slow process by every martial artist. However, I disagree with this statement. Why should mana absorption be slow? Why should it take decades for people to advance two or three realms when they could be achieved within a year."

"Pff-" Hearing Lake’s words, Kate couldn’t help but laugh.

Looking at Lake with a disdainful expression she spoke in a condescending tone, "Advance two realms within one year? Don’t you know that even advancing a minor level within a year is already considered a blessing, yet you want to go advancing entire realms within only one?"

"I hope you know that even the people with the fastest advancement speed in the entire continent right now are the third years who have only advanced to the Martial Warrior realm after three years of training."

Hearing Kate’s words, Lake only got up from his seat.

"Whether you believe me or not, meet me outside the training hall after practical training and you’ll see."

Seeing Lake walk away, Kate frowned as she thought to herself, "Could he really have something up his sleeve?"

...

Like that, time quickly passed.

Lake attended practical training as usual. This time, due to the addition of the group of fairies, class was kept fairly simple to give the three a chance to adjust.

Surprisingly, the three fairies showed formidable strength during the training. Since Lake couldn’t read their fates, he didn’t have much of an impression of their strength and had to use his own judgment to make a guess as to what their true strength was.

Luckily, Bramble and Iris were each challenged to a spar by some of the other students which allowed Lake to get a gauge on each of their strengths. From what Lake did see, he was able to estimate that Bramble and Iris had the physical strength of Mid Rank and Low Rank Martial Apprentice respectively.

Unfortunately, Sylph wasn’t challenged to a spar so Lake wasn’t able to see much from her, although she was able to keep up with the physical training of the other students which proved that she at least had a little bit of strength.

Soon, the class ended and Lake stood outside the training hall after changing out of his training suit.

After waiting a few minutes, he saw Kate walk out the building in her uniform.

"Alright, I’m here. How are you going to make me believe now?"

This time Kate didn’t speak in a condescending way but decided to give Lake a chance.

After she thought it over, she didn’t have any reason to not at least hear him out so she still came over to see what he was trying to prove.

"That’s good, but there are too many people here. The process becomes a little troublesome if someone disturbs us so it would be better if we could go somewhere with less people."

Upon hearing what Lake said, Kate instinctively defended her body. Personally, she didn’t believe that Lake could help her with her training after hearing what he wanted to do during lunch so she’s been carefully thinking about what could be his real goal and after hearing what he just said, she instinctively reacted.

Seeing her reaction, Lake’s eyes twitched slightly.

"Relax, we’ll be heading to a private training room so there’s no need to be so tense. Although the chamber doesn’t have anyone in it besides us, there are security measures in place to prevent things like that."

Hearing Lake’s words, Kate visibly relaxed as she breathed a sigh of relief.

"If there is nothing else, let’s get going. Time is very precious right now." Lake spoke as he walked towards the private training rooms.

Seeing Lake moving ahead, Kate followed behind him.

However, classes just finished and everyone was walking out of the training hall.

That’s why when both Lake and Kate entered the same private training room together, a lot of people saw them.

...

After Lake paid the points fee and entered the training room with Kate, the door behind them closed automatically. The room was plain white, but there was a variety of training equipment scattered throughout the room for the student to use with a large open space in the center.

The roof of the area was made of glass allowing for the light from the sky to shine down. Class ended late and the sun was already close to setting, revealing the stars hidden in the sky.

Lake knew that Kate’s technique required a clear view of the night sky for it to work completely so he made sure to choose a training room with an open sky.

After looking around once, Lake got familiar with the environment before walking forward towards the center of the open space.

Kate followed behind him and waited for him to explain.

"You can sit in the center of the room as if you were practicing your technique. What I’m going to do next may feel a little strange at first but try to remember the feeling as clearly as possible."

"Like you said before, time is precious, so I’m only giving you an hour of my time to convince me."

Kate spoke as she sat down. Since she decided to give him a chance, she may as well go all the way.

"Don’t worry. After five minutes, you’ll naturally believe me."

After seeing Kate get into position to practice her technique, Lake placed both his hands on her back.

"Hey! What are you doing-"

Feeling Lake’s hands on her back, Kate got jumpy and wanted to shout, but soon felt a cold stream of energy invade her body. This energy was extremely familiar to Kate yet unfamiliar.

Thinking back on it, Kate quickly remembered where she felt this energy before. It was right after Lake’s torturous training. He placed a finger on her forehead and a cold energy similar to this had invaded her body, causing her to uncontrollably relax and fall asleep.

Thinking of this, Kate got worried.

"He wouldn’t really try something here, right? What if I really pass out here alone with Lake where no one could enter? No, I have to get out of here now!"

Kate was about to forcefully move away when Lake suddenly spoke out, bringing her back to her senses.

"Focus. I’m running my mana through your body. Try running your technique and allow my mana to flow along with it. When the time comes, I’ll make some adjustments to your flow path using my mana. Just let it happen and go along with it."

Hearing Lake’s words, Kate was slightly stunned but soon calmed down. After thinking about it again, it really wasn’t possible for Lake to try something like that here in the academy, unless he really wanted to die.

After adjusting her mood, Kate calmed down and allowed Lake’s mana to flow through her body. She must admit, for some reason Lake’s mana made her feel extremely comfortable.

With her body relaxed, Kate took a deep breath as she started to run her technique. She wasn’t worried about Lake stealing her technique from following her mana path as there was a lot more to it than just that.

She wasn’t worried about Lake unintentionally harming her either by messing with her flow path. If she sensed danger or felt any pain she could easily cut off the mana flow before anything disastrous happened.

Besides, she realized that Lake only released a small amount of mana into her body. She guessed that he did this out of consideration as such a small amount of mana could easily be crushed by her stellar fusion mana.

With the technique starting up, the mana in the surrounding air slowly started to flow towards her, entering her body through her open palms. Kate felt the mana she was accustomed to circulating in her palms before starting to slowly crawl up her arms, running through her meridians.

However, as the mana was slowly moving through her meridians, she suddenly felt Lake’s mana invade them and took control of the direction of mana.

Kate felt this and slightly frowned but heard Lake’s words behind her.

"Pay attention. Try your best to memorize the flow path I’m about to show you."

Listening to Lake’s words, Kate focused on the mana flowing through her body. The path it traveled along was extremely unfamiliar to her and she could feel the mana struggling to go through the path as if it was blocked by a barricade.

"The path is blocked due to negligence over time. If we want the mana to flow through, I’m going to have to use a bit of my mana to break through the blockade. This will be painful. I hope you can endure."

Hearing Lake’s words, Kate began to focus as she allowed Lake’s mana to enter her meridians as she braced herself for the pain.

Lake’s mana gathered in her meridians as it mixed in with the newly absorbed mana, controlling it to flow in a rotating pattern within the meridians, building up momentum overtime.

Once Lake felt the momentum had reached a certain point, he felt that it was enough and sent the mana rushing towards the blocked meridian channels like a tidal wave.

Boom!

A sound like an explosion rang out inside Kate’s arms as she suddenly felt the area where the mana gathered burn in a severe pain. She immediately wanted to cut off her flow of mana upon sensing the pain but hurriedly stopped herself.

Although it was only an instant, Kate really did feel the flow of mana in her body speed up during that moment. That’s why she didn’t cut off Lake’s mana from her body when she noticed the speed of the mana in her body.

However, before she could adjust to the pain, she suddenly felt the mana in her body start to move again under Lake’s control.

She wanted to shout out for him to wait but Lake gave her no chance.

Boom!

With another explosion, Kate felt a new mana pathway open up in her body as the mana began to flow at an even quicker place. On a normal occasion, she would be extraordinarily happy at such a thing, however, the pain she felt from the mana pathway being unblocked made her feel like her arm was being torn apart from the inside out.

At this point, Kate couldn’t resist anymore and released a loud scream.

Sensing Kate about to scream out, Lake removed one hand from her back before hurriedly moving it to block Kate’s mouth. After all, although the walls of the facility were sound proof, the faculty in charge of the training hall always had a certain level of surveillance in the private room in case a student encountered any danger during their practice.

Lake didn’t wish to attract the attention of the academy just yet as he still had a few more things to prepare before he revealed his plans to the academy. After all, the academy was going to be a big help when it came to completing his quest.

However, what Lake didn’t realize was that when he moved his hand to block Kate’s mouth, she suddenly clenched down biting down on his palm.
