Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The New System Features

When Lake saw the news, he took out his own phone to browse through the internet.

There were various posts and discussions about the new race online. Lake clicked one of the more popular discussion forums and started to read through it.

"Bro, the world is changing too rapidly. We now have the addition of the fairy race. I predict in the future we should see elves and dwarves start popping up!"

"Ahhhhh! The fairies are so good looking! Did you see the males in the video? They were better looking than some of the idols and actors in our world!"

"lol. The women were also gorgeous, I wonder what’s their opinion on interspecies relationships?"

"The two commenters should be sent to horny jail! (look of disdain)"

"I wonder how this is going to affect the hunter industries? What if more races like the fairies start showing up in the future?"

"That would be awesome! Our world might genuinely turn into a fantasy world at that point."

"Our world was already a fantasy world from the moment the rifts appeared dude."

"Do you think the fairies could use magic like in fiction?"

"They have wings and by all laws of physics those thin wings shouldn’t allow for flight. So unless they’re there for style, there must be something magical about them to work!"

"It seems like Prestige is acting up big time with the advent of the fairy race. I heard they attacked another major city."

"Damn, did those psychos get jealous of the fairies’ good looks and lose it again?"

"It seems like they’re becoming more active nowadays. I hope the Martial Association can finally deal with them soon."

...

After Lake scrolled through the forums for a while, he dropped his phone and started to think.

Although most of the comments were nonsense, he did pick up on some information that left him pondering.

"Magic, huh? If the fairies can really use it, it might be worthwhile to research them. Their wings were also unique, I wonder if they had any magical properties. I could probably use it for magic if that were the case..."

Ever since he had acquired the Mage role, over analyzing things had become a part of him. It also didn’t help that the new skills he had gained promoted this subconscious overthinking.

[Spellcasting lv 1 - A mage’s basic ability is to manipulate the magical energy within their body to cast spells. At the current level, you can manipulate the magical energy within your body to perform basic spells.]

[Arcane Knowledge lv 1 - A mage should be able to understand the fundamental principles of magic in order to research old, and create new spells and magical techniques. At the current level, you have a fundamental grasp of the principles of magic.]

With the addition of the Arcane Knowledge Skill, Lake had so much information and theories flying through his head, even if he were to sit down for a few months, he would never be able to sort through them all.

One of the more prominent effects of these two skills however, was the fact that Lake now had the means to interact with and manipulate mana!

[Status]

Host = Lake Egoven

Age = 18

Primary Role = Master of Fate

Secondary Roles = Master Assassin, Mage

[Stats]

Strength = 10.00

Agility = 6.05

Stamina = 8.36

Mana Strength = 0.10

Mana Capacity = 0.35

Thanks to a combination of the Spellcasting and Arcane Knowledge skills, Lake was able to derive a subskill he dubbed Mana Circulation.

It was a simple skill that allowed him to draw mana from his surroundings before storing it in his body. It took him a few weeks of research before he could successfully create and utilize the technique, however, the effects it brought were worth it.

The technique worked by storing the mana in a selected flow path he had created inside his body that would continuously run the mana through it.

He had used what little he remembered from Harper’s Blood Vitality Technique for reference as he thought its recovery effect and large mana capacity were useful. Using it as a base, he modified the technique to better suit his needs as a mage.

Thanks to that, Lake had the benefits that Harper’s technique brought while also being able to better utilize the mana in his body to perform spells.

Unfortunately, Lake had only completed the technique two weeks ago so he didn’t have much time to practice it. Because of this, his Mana Capacity was still low and all he could do was barely enhance his body’s strength with it, and that was something he had to teach himself!

Since the Mage role he acquired was low tier, Lake only received the bare minimum required to make him a mage. If he wanted to cast proper spells, he would first have to meet two conditions.

The first was to have the required amount of mana to cast the spell. The second was to actually go do the research and create the spell himself using the basic knowledge of the arcane arts that he got with the role.

However, this wasn’t that bad of a thing to Lake. Since he had acquired the Mage role, he somehow found himself enjoying the process of research and spellcrafting.

Arguably, Lake could have chosen to spend his RP points to directly increase his Mana Capacity, but he ultimately decided against this for three reasons.

One, Lake felt that it wasn’t necessary to use his points to increase his stats as they could be naturally raised through training and other methods. It would be a waste to spend the points on increasing his stats when he could have used it to increase the level of his skills.

Two, Lake wanted to stockpile his points for now. Right now, his most reliable method of farming RP points was through hunting. However, Lake would be heading to the academy soon and his chances of getting to hunt would be lowered significantly.

In case of emergency, it would be better to have a stockpile of RP ready to spend when the time comes. That’s why even though he had gained so many points from the Garden, he still hasn’t used them yet.

The third reason was the most simple but was also the greatest reason why Lake refused to use the points to upgrade his stats. It was way too expensive!

Out of curiosity, Lake had checked out the cost to upgrade Mana Capacity but when he saw the price, even his emotionless heart skipped a beat.

In order to upgrade 0.01 point of Mana Capacity, it would cost Lake 10 RP points. That meant if he wanted to increase his stat by 1 it would require 1000 points!

When Lake had seen this he checked over the cost of the other stats and found that they were also similar. All of his stats besides strength caused 10 points to upgrade by 0.01.

As for the cost to upgrade the strength stat, Lake felt his heart jump when he saw the price.

It seems that when his strength stat had capped out at 10 from the maxed out Steel Body, it also increased the price to upgrade it as the amount to go past 10 by even 0.01 point of strength was a 100 RP points!

After Lake had seen this, he had resolved to never use RP to increase his stats in the future unless it was absolutely necessary.

At that moment, Lake heard a ping from the system as a new notification popped up.

When Lake heard the notification, he immediately knew what it was.

Ever since the system upgraded he had gained a few useful features from the system.

One of them was the World Map that would occasionally ping him when it detected a new abnormality in the world.

Opening the world map, Lake looked on as a 3D replica of the world appeared before him. Zooming in on the Grey Dragon Continent, Lake could see several small icons appear on the map.

The icons were greatly varied and each represented different things. Luckily, there was a map key that Lake could look through, otherwise, he would have really had a hard time reading the map.

Besides from the fact that it was a 3D map of the world, the World Map also had the added effect of occasionally sending him a notification when an Abnormality was detected.

The icon for an abnormality was a simple blue spiral and after Lake did some research into the locations of the spiral, he came up with a hypothesis that what the system referred to as an abnormality was in fact a rift.

Whenever it sounded off, it was to alert him of a new rift opening up. Of course Lake hadn’t tested that theory yet as he would have to go to the site of one of the spirals in order to confirm it, but unfortunately no spirals had appeared near Sunset City so he didn’t have the chance to test it.

The other functions were the System Storage and the Item Appraisal.

The System Storage was self explanatory. It was a simple storage space that the system had created for Lake to store items. Right now, he only kept Bloom’s Rubik’s cube, his armor and the sword that he took from the Spider Nest inside it.

The Item Appraisal had the ability to analyze any item and give Lake an in-depth analysis of its uses and history. However, it came with a cost. Every time he used it, depending on the complexity of the item he wanted to analyze, it would consume a certain amount of RP. For example, the cost to analyze a table would be almost negligent, costing 0.001 RP to analyze while something like his phone would cost slightly higher at 0.01 RP to analyze.

Lake had tried to analyze the runes on the sword he had gotten from the Spider Nest as it was something that made him curious, but after seeing the cost decided against it.

[??? Sword - 500 Points Required.]

Although the cost could be considered small when compared to the points he currently possessed, Lake didn’t feel it was necessary to spend points at the moment.

Instead, he approached the runes from the perspective of a mage, analyzing the runes on the sword from a magical perspective. Surprisingly, Lake managed to find some results with this method of testing so he decided to stick with it.

It also doubled as a win as doing research on magical things was also earning him RP points at the same time.

The last thing Lake tried to test out was his Writer of Fate skill. It was one of the first skills Lake had acquired yet he never had a chance to use it before due to the mana requirement.

Now that he had access to mana however, Lake didn’t let the opportunity slip and immediately tried testing it out. He used the ability on the person closest to him, his sister.

Using the skill he altered her fate for her to have a small stroke of misfortune the next day.

He totally didn’t choose for it to be misfortune because he had something against his sister, it just so happened that making something bad happen strangely cost less mana than making something good happen.

Something he also figured out was that the greater the change in the person’s fate, the greater the mana cost. With his current mana capacity, he could only make minor changes to someone’s fate within the next 24 hours.

In the case of his sister, she only ended up tripping and falling down at his apartment’s doorsteps.

After being lost in thought for a while, Lake eventually shifted out of his daze as he turned to look at his elder sister who was engrossed in her phone.

When Lake looked over at her screen, he could see that she was staring at the picture of one of the male fairies.

Lake didn’t say anything as he simply got off of his bed and prepared to continue training his mana.

Next week would be the opening day of the academy. Until then, Lake planned to continue his research and train his mana before he had to go.

However, unbeknownst to Lake, an agreement between the Royals and the Fairies had already been made that would drastically affect his new school life.
