Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Fairy Race

Seated on a chair inside a private room, was a gorgeous black haired beauty who was currently staring at the holographic screen in front of her.

On the screen was an image of a handsome young man with some lines of text next to it.

"Lake Egoven..." Kate slowly spoke as she looked at the information on the screen.

A few months ago she had taken part in the Martial Arts Course Exam and came in third place. At the time she had partnered with who she thought was the strongest examinee at the time, Bradford Keraunos. However, the end result was far different from what she had imagined when that demon came out of nowhere.

Looking over to her left was another screen with a video showcasing the brutal massacre of a near helpless tribe of goblins. She had rewatched this video countless times and each time had left her impressed.

He was decisive, cruel and had no hesitation when it came to killing. Although the combat technique and skills he showed were slightly subpar, his mentality was that of a perfect killer and it had deeply captured Kate’s interest.

As both the daughter of the Guild Master and heir to one of the continent’s top guilds, Kate liked to keep an eye out for any talents that she could recruit to the guild.

She had already acquired and went through the profiles of her future classmates, marking out those she should take interest in and those that weren’t worth the effort.

From the information she had gathered, she had created a list of who she would try to recruit and who she wouldn’t bother with.

There were only 103 candidates that passed the test this year, and among those candidates, Lake was acclaimed the best.

However, he was also the candidate that Kate had the hardest time placing.

This wasn’t because she had a negative opinion of Lake’s ruthless methods. Instead, she found that to be a positive as it would make him better at clearing rifts in the future as he would be able to do it in the most efficient and effective way, even if it may seem cruel and heartless.

The problem Kate had was with his background. Right before the exams, Kate had sent orders for people to investigate Lake’s background but instead she was stopped in her tracks by her parents.

She didn’t know why, but it seemed that her parents didn’t want her investigating him for some reason which only served to further her curiosity.

It took her two months after the exam to get any information since she was forced to investigate the matter herself. She had to be careful of her parents so the process took far longer than normal.

However, after she had acquired the information, she was even more confused. From what she gathered, Lake was only an orphan with an abnormally strong physique.

Aside from the fact that he had a sister that worked in a high ranking guild, there was nothing else of interest about him.

All of this had made Kate question her parents intentions. If his background was only so, there was no reason for them to so strongly reject her investigation on him.

However, Kate wasn’t going to risk anything yet, even after finding out about his background. If her parents didn’t want her to investigate him, there must be a reason and until she found out what it was, she wasn’t going to do anything rash.

Looking over at the calendar on her screen, she could see that next week was going to be the opening day of the Academy. At that time she would take the chance to slowly investigate this matter.

At that moment, a notification popped up on her screen catching her attention.

When she read the title of the notification, a look of shock appeared on her face before slowly turning into a frown.

...

Back in Lake’s small apartment, he walked out of the bathroom after taking a shower.

Walking into the living room, he could see that his sister, Lilia, was sitting on his bed as she scrolled through her phone.

She had been coming over to his small and cramped apartment frequently recently. Her guild had opened up a new office in Sunset City and she immediately took the chance to change office so that she could live closer to Lake.

Sighing, Lake looked at his sister before speaking, "When are you going to stop coming over, sis? Didn’t you rent a bigger apartment up town?"

"Hah... You’re going to be leaving for the Academy next week. Why can’t I come over to spend some more time with my adorable little brother before he goes?"

"If that was all you wanted, I of course wouldn’t mind. However, every time you come over you just force me to make you something to eat and laze around on my bed. I don’t exactly see how this is spending time together."

"Fool! Don’t you know just being in the same room can be considered as spending time together?"

"If that’s what you believe, no wonder you still don’t have a boyfriend."

Lilia rolled her eyes at Lake’s retort, "You of all people should know that there isn’t a man alive that can match up to me-"

"Yes, yes," Lake cut her off before she could continue, "My big sister is invincible and stands at the peak of womanly charm. There is not a single man alive who could possibly match up her perfect self... Did I miss anything from the usual?"

This time Lilia frowned as she grabbed a pillow from the bed before throwing it at Lake.

After Lake effortlessly caught it, she continued, "Oh shut it. Besides, I don’t believe you of all people have the right to criticize me after what you did to that poor girl. When I told you that you had to reveal your true self to her eventually, I meant to do it in a gentle and slow way, not outright come out with it and break her heart into a million pieces like an asshole."

"Like I told you, she was smarter than I thought and figured it-"

"Enough of that nonsense! With the lying techniques and knowledge of a woman’s heart that I taught you, you should have been able to easily get out of that situation, even if she was on to you, so why the hell did you tell her the truth so plainly?! Are you deliberately trying to make her despise you?!"

This time Lake didn’t say anything as he just watched his sister throw a small fit.

"Hah... I wonder how you find the heart to ask about my love life. With a brother as cold hearted as you, I’m too busy worrying about you to focus on myself."

"Sorry..." Lake apologized for his rudeness, but Lilia could still see that his face was completely calm and unfazed which caused her to frown.

"Anyway, what happened to your façade? You’ve been showing your true self around me a lot more than normal. It’s fine if you only do it around me, but it could be problematic if you show it to others."

"I decided to change it up a bit, so I’ve been busy reworking it."

"Change? Was there something wrong with the playboy persona I made for you?"

When Lake heard his sister’s words, he looked at her with a dead look in his eyes.

Looking at her genuinely clueless face, Lake wanted to retort with, "You still have the nerve to ask what was wrong with it?"

However, he refrained himself from saying something that might trigger another tantrum knowing his sister’s personality.

"Nothing... I just decided it would be better to rework it a little to suit the new Academy environment."

"Hmm... I guess that makes sense."

At that moment, Lilia’s phone rang from an incoming call.

She casually answered it.

"Hello?"

"Lilia! Did you see the news!" A feminine voice shouted out from the other side of the phone causing Lilia to reel back.

"Jeez, Calm down. Is there really any need to shout over the phone? What did you say anyway?"

"Sorry, sorry. I was just so excited. Anyway, just go check out the news now. I’ll send a link to you so that you can check it out on your phone. This is ground breaking news that might even affect the entire hunter world!"

Hearing her friend’s excitement, Lilia was slightly confused. Just what happened?

Before she could ask her friend what was going on she heard a beep as her friend hung up on her leaving her dumbfounded.

With no other choice, she opened up her chat to see the message link before clicking it.

Lake took the chance to sit down beside her on the bed so that they could watch the video together.

After clicking on the link, they were taken to a video of a news agency.

Before the video even began to play, Lilia opened her eyes wide as Lake looked on with interest.

On the screen they could see the image of a group of strangely dressed but gorgeous people. They possessed a variety of strange hair colors like pink and blue but Lake was most interested in their pointed ears, and the pair of translucent, glittering wings on their back.

At the moment of the video Lake could see several subtitles flashing past the screen.

"Humanities first contact with a non-aggressive intellectual species inside a rift!"

"Strange new race that is able to communicate with humanity!"

"What does this mean for the futures of hunters? Would more intelligent races appear from rifts in the future? Will humanity start working together with other races?"

"Enchanting new Fairy Race has made their appearance on the Grey Dragon Continent!"

"The Fairy Race has now entered negotiation with the Royal Family! Will the fairies end up being friend or foe? The decision is now in the hands of the Royal Family."
