Chapter 149: The Giant Horned Bison Dies!
Chapter 149: Chapter 149: The Giant Horned Bison Dies!
To the southwest of the battlefield where Lake and the others were located, a group of hunters sprinted across the grassland. News had reached the Stronghold of a hefty wolf pack making its way down from the hills.
These hunters had known about these green wolves for some time, having seen them hunting in the open field now and then in small groups of five or six wolves. But this was the first time they had heard of the entire pack moving together, especially in such an open manner.
Back at the Stronghold, the news had created a stir. Almost all available hunters geared up in response.
The Academy’s Instructors were the first to move, rushing ahead of the coalition of hunters. They knew the students were still out there and if they were to run into a monster horde of that size, it could only spell disaster.
This was especially true when a certain piece of news was circulating among the reports: a large wolf more than twice the size of the others was briefly spotted leading the charge.
The average level of the wolves was known to be around Mid-Peak Rank One. The thought of a larger wolf taking the lead and surpassing the others in size raised considerable concern.
Everyone hoped that it was just a bigger-than-average wolf, but they all knew better than to believe in such childish hopes.
Far ahead of the other hunters and instructors, Alec was alone as he rushed towards the predicted site of the wolves.
He wasted no time and was among the first to dash out of the Stronghold once the news reached him. The students were vulnerable, and if anything happened to them, it would be a big problem for both him and the Academy.
Sure, they had told the students that death was on the table for the exam, but it was more of a caution. With the guardians, they would be safe, even if a Rank Two creature popped up.
Yet, given the size of the wolf pack, even the guardians could be overwhelmed and killed, especially if a Rank Two was leading the pack as rumors believed.
With his Grandmaster-level strength, he could quickly dispatch the entire wolf pack, yet his main concern was his students’ safety. "Damn it, why did this have to happen on exam day? Are we really that unlucky?" he muttered, cursing under his breath. Alec scanned for abnormalities with his mana as he ran, keeping an eye out for any wandering students.
He spotted a few along the way but quickly judged that they weren’t in any danger, so he continued to move ahead. The other instructors following behind him would be responsible for informing them.
"The report said the wolf pack was heading to the center of the plains. Are they fighting over territory with the Bison herd?" Recalling the academy’s investigation, Alec knew about both the Bison herd and the Wolf pack.
The Bison were always out in the open and weren’t a secret to the hunters. The only reason why no one had bothered to hunt them despite knowing of their existence was that it was simply too troublesome.
With the size of the Giant Horned Bison, unless you had a full transportation and disassembly team behind you, it was realistically impossible to transport the corpse of the creature after defeating it, so no one bothered to kill it.
As for why larger guilds capable of both killing it and transporting it didn’t do it, it was because the cost-to-profit ratio was too low. They would spend more money than they would earn from killing it, so it didn’t make sense to hunt it.
Besides, the Bison were herbivores and wouldn’t attack you as long as you avoided their territory, so no one bothered to agitate them.
What worried Alec more was the wolf pack. The possibility of a Rank Two wolf leading a pack of Rank One wolves was a scary thought.
No one had heard of such a creature during the Academy’s initial field investigation. The Wolf pack was initially categorized as a regular pack of Rank One wolves, deemed moderately dangerous for the students, but not life-threatening; but with the addition of the Rank Two Wolf, its threat level had been elevated significantly.
Boom!
An explosion echoed in the distance as Alec sped up, turning into a blur, covering the ground quickly.
The battle had already begun, evidenced by the trembling ground beneath his feet. He rushed towards the fight, crossing tens of kilometers in less than a minute with his speed.
It didn’t take him long to reach the location of the battle, using the intense shockwaves and tremors to track down the location.
In a flash, he arrived in the vicinity of the battlefield but quickly came to a stop when he noticed a humanoid figure standing nearby.
’Hmm? Isn’t that one of the guardians? What’s he still doing here? And where are his assigned students?’
Alec’s worries soared as he saw Romero standing to the side as he watched the battlefield with a blank look.
As he was about to run up to question Romero, however, he suddenly felt another tremor as a loud, pained cry filled his ears.
He didn’t immediately observe the battlefield when he arrived as Romero’s presence had captured his full attention, but after hearing that pained cry, he couldn’t help but look over instinctively.
"...."
In an instant, Alec’s face froze, his worldview being shaken violently.
"...You’ve got to be kidding me, right?"
He laughed dryly as he helplessly collapsed backward onto the ground, sitting with his legs spread and arms pressed against the soft grass behind him.
The continuous tremors on the ground told him repeatedly that this was all real yet he still couldn’t help but feel that he was dreaming.
Seeing both the small and large figures jumping around the colossal Bison as if it was merely a giant playpark, and the pack of wolves that had surrounded a small herd of bison and working together with both a human and fairy, Alec felt that his worldview crumbled to dust.
"Haaah~" Releasing a long sigh, he took out a cigarette from his trench coat before lighting it with the lighter in his pocket.
He hadn’t smoked since the Academy opened up as he had to maintain some semblance of dignity as a teacher before his students, but after seeing everything in front of him, he felt that it was okay to throw away his dignity, just for today.
"...Maybe I should look into retiring early..."
Giggling at his own joke, he took a puff before keeping his eyes locked on the battlefield.
Since he was already here, he might as well take the time to learn more about his students; that way, he could come up with a more befitting training regimen for them.
As his gaze swept across each student, a subtle shift manifested in his golden strand of fate. The imposing figure behind the smaller one took on a new luminosity, its eyes gleaming with a familiar watchfulness directed towards its diminutive counterpart.
****
"Howl!"
The Alpha Wolf roared as its sharp claws dug into the slash wound on the Giant Bison.
The Giant Bison wanted to retaliate, but its feet were suddenly tied down by shackles extending from the earth.
It was able to break out of its confines easily, but it caused a slight delay in its reaction, allowing the Alpha Wolf to successfully retreat after ravaging its open wounds.
While the Bison was focused on the Alpha Wolf, a small figure had appeared in the air before its face.
The small figure took a strange fighting stance before rocketing his fist towards the Bison’s head.
Boom!
His fist traveled so fast that it broke past the sound barrier with a small explosion as it smacked into the Bison’s forehead, forcing the behemoth to lower its head from the massive force despite the astonishing difference in size.
The Bison struggled to regain its stance, but before it could even recover from the blow, it felt its wounds being opened further from the vicious attacks of the Alpha Wolf that had returned during that short moment.
This repeated attack and retreat had been going on for a few minutes now, with Lake and the Alpha Wolf constantly tag-teaming the Giant Bison, who was helpless to their ruthless assault.
It had tried to run away, but its legs were attacked, causing it to collapse to the floor in its retreat. When it tried to fight back, its two attackers would take turns to attack it, giving it no chance to retaliate.
In this situation, it couldn’t attack or retreat. It stood there, forced to endure their relentless assault.
"GROARR!!"
It roared in hopes of calling the rest of its herd to come to its aid, but that too was useless as it could clearly see that the remaining few bison that survived the battle had been surrounded and captured by a large pack of wolves that outnumbered them 2:1.
Its hopes were slowly dwindling as time went on, and it had been on the verge of succumbing to death, but it chose to stubbornly hold on as it had noticed that as time went on, the attacks of its two opponents were getting weaker.
It seemed like this prolonged battle had greatly exhausted their stamina, and now it was banking on its opponents exhausting themselves before they could kill it.
After all, if there was one thing the Giant Horned Bison was confident in, it was its defense and stamina.
Boom!
With another explosion, its massive body rocked back from one of Lake’s punches.
It was still scary to the Giant Bison how a small human like that could push it back with only his fist despite their size difference, but the attacks themselves actually did little damage to it as the punches couldn’t pierce its thick defense.
"Groar?"
Suddenly, the Giant Horned Bison noticed that its attackers had retreated temporarily.
’It’s my time!’ is the look the Giant Horned Bison had on its face.
The Alpha Wolf had fallen back and was staring at it with vicious eyes while the human had retreated into the sky, seemingly floating mid-air.
"Hm?"
The Giant Horned Bison noticed that another humanoid figure with wings was standing next to the human, clasping her hands together in an almost prayer-like state.
The male human also had his hands extended out, as two strange magical circles appeared around them.
The Giant Bison’s guard was instantly raised. Every time that human had his hands glow like that, the ground would either collapse under its feet or extend out to trap it in place.
"?"
After waiting a few seconds to see what changes the human would make to the environment this time, the Giant Bison noticed that nothing was happening, causing it to think that the human had exhausted his strange ability.
"GROARR!"
It roared loudly, knowing that the human’s strange magic wouldn’t be able to hold it down any longer. Its first goal now was to rush in and save the remaining bison in its herd. If they managed to gather together, they should be able to escape from these vicious hunters.
However, before it could even take a step forward, it suddenly saw a small figure flashing towards it. Its eyes tried to follow it as the figure jumped from side to side, but it moved so fast that the figure only looked like a black dot in its vision.
Swish!
Suddenly, before the Bison could react, the figure flashed underneath it as a sudden emptiness began to fill the area below and behind its head.
"Moo?"
BANG!
Whoosh!
The Bison didn’t know why, but it had suddenly collapsed to the ground, causing a massive shockwave to spread throughout the area.
As its vision faded, it didn’t know what had happened. The last thing it saw was the figure of a female human falling from the sky.
Her body was covered in blood, and strange pink chunks were stuck to her clothes and long black hair.
It didn’t take long after that for the Bison to realize it had died, as its vision and thoughts came to an abrupt end.
