Chapter 123: Disappearing into the night
Chapter 123: Chapter 123: Disappearing into the night
Seeing that the woman had finally died, Lake felt slightly relieved.
He rarely used the Writer of Fate ability due to its high mana cost to effect ratio so he wasn’t sure how it would work out in the end.
When he was in the mana storm, he used the excess mana he was absorbing to push the limits of his skill.
It was meant to be extra insurance and he was glad to see it pay off.
If the effects had been any weaker and the woman had survived, Lake didn’t know what he would’ve done.
Staring at the disturbing blob of fate extending from the woman’s head, Lake was prepared to go and collect it but stopped and frowned.
"It still hasn’t disconnected..."
Wiggling above the woman’s decapitated head was the disgusting mass of black fate.
It was jumping and squirming, looking as if something was trying to break out from inside.
The wart-like protrusions were constantly expanding and shrinking and before Lake could react, they all suddenly burst open!
Pop!
Whoosh!
The ominous mist inside the warts blasted into the surroundings, flying around aimlessly before disappearing into the night sky.
Lake watched all of this with a deep frown.
Once the ominous energy had disappeared, another shocking scene occurred.
"It’s melting?!"
Lake’s frown gradually disappeared, replaced by a look of shock.
The woman’s originally disgusting strand of fate had begun to melt.
The black mold and dirt that had covered her fate slowly began to fall off, piece by piece, melting down into an ominous mist before flying away similarly to the mist.
As more and more of the black mist floated away, the trembling fate underneath the dirt and mold was slowly revealed to Lake.
Lake watched on in astonishment as the final piece of mold broke off and turned to mist.
The shining bright fate in the shape of a mask was revealed to him.
Lake wanted to take the chance to read it but the fate that was still attached to the woman’s head until now, finally showed signs of disconnecting.
Knowing that he didn’t have time, Lake quickly moved to grab it.

Lake briefly glanced through the notifications.
Although he was shocked and had a lot of questions floating around his head, he exited the system notifications and looked over the destroyed auditorium.
He didn’t have time to deal with the system as another pressing matter had just come up.
The Gargoyle had just crawled out of the rubble after being kicked by the woman.
Thankfully, its defense was incredibly strong, even among Rank Three beasts, so it came out mostly unscathed from the blow.
The problem that had arisen was from the man next to Lake who seemed to have taken notice of the gargoyle.
The Moonlight Grandmaster, one of the top ranking Martial Grandmasters on the continent and the guild leader of the Blackheart Guild.
He had collected many legendary accolades across his career and had played an active role in the reclaiming of humanity’s land in the uprising after The Disaster.
Killing millions of beasts, reclaiming a multitude of lost cities, was a large factor in the success of a Rank Five Beast raid and was at the forefront of the rift clean up alongside his guild.
He was a hero among the ordinary people of the continent with only the hundred Martial Lords and ten Martial Kings ranking higher than him.
However, to Lake, this man was neither a hero nor a legend, but the father of his classmate, Kate Blackheart, and also someone who seemed to know his past.
"Stand back." Arthur said as he stepped towards the Gargoyle.
Lake knew that if he didn’t make a move now, his hard earned Martial Master subordinate was going to die.
"Wait. The Gargoyle isn’t a threat."
"What?"
Only then did Arthur turn around and take the chance to carefully observe Lake’s current appearance.
He was dressed in an all black attire with a hood and a mask covering his face.
Seeing Arthur’s stern gaze as if asking for an answer, Lake didn’t speak but instead raised his arm as he fully spread out his King’s Aura.
Arthur’s eyes widened slightly upon feeling the majestic aura but he didn’t make a move.
"Come."
Lake spoke one word empowered by his King’s Aura. With a light wave of his hand, it seems as if the Gargoyle understood his intention before flying over with a scowl on his face.
Seeing the Gargoyle obeying Lake’s command, Arthur’s eyes opened wide before he suddenly thought of something.
"A few months ago a video was recorded of a man leading an army of low rank spider monsters. Never did I expect to see the same man before my eyes, at least not in this manner."
"It is a pleasure to greet one of the continent’s top ranking Grandmasters." Lake replied to Arthur’s subtle acknowledgement with a light bow.
Knowing that the Gargoyle wasn’t a major threat for the time being, Arthur’s expression seemed to visibly relax a little.
"What happened here?"
"Reporting to the Grandmaster, It seems this was a planned attack orchestrated by the terrorist group, Prestige."
Lake saw Arthur’s eyes widen slightly at the mention of the word Prestige but he quickly went back to normal.
"Very well, we’ll continue the investigation later. For now, we’ll focus on securing the safety of the remaining citizens."
"You’ll come with me, and bring your Gargoyle along as well. Although it may be under your control, it is still a beast and is far too dangerous to leave flying around the city."
"Understood."
"Follow me." Using his King’s Aura, Lake sent out another command.
Although the Gargoyle seemed extremely irritated at being ordered around, it didn’t act up, something Lake was grateful for.
It seemed that the Gargoyle valued its master’s life just as much as its own.
After leaving the building, Lake was greeted by the shocking sight of more than ten Martial Masters gathered together with over a hundred Martial Warriors.
Moonbright City was a big city with hundreds of guilds gathered together, both big and small so it wasn’t so surprising to have this many hunters gathered here.
However, what left Lake confused was why they all gathered here.
Although he could roughly understand how Kate managed to convince her father to make a move, he didn’t see her holding any persuasive power over the members of the other guilds.
As if he expected Lake’s shock, Arthur briefly explained the reason.
"A few minutes ago there was a massive mana disturbance above the theater causing all of the Martial Masters in the city to come investigate."
Lake quickly understood the cause and effect after hearing his explanation. A few minutes ago he really did make a big mana disturbance using the storm as support.
It really wouldn’t be too strange if people gathered to investigate, much less the hunters responsible for protecting the city.
Lake watched as everyone tensed up upon seeing the tall Gargoyle walking behind him.
However, seeing that neither he nor Arthur seem to care about its existence, they didn’t make a scene and only kept vigilance.
Arthur walked up to the group of Martial Masters and Warriors who were waiting for his return.
"The main threat has been dealt with. What remains is the injured civilians. The building is too damaged from the aftermath of the fight so focus on transporting the civilians out of the theater."
"Their bodies were under Mana Field pressure for an extended period of time. It would be difficult for them to move on their own so it’s up to us to carry them out."
"Someone contact the Hunter’s Association and get a few ambulances on the way."
Hearing his orders, everyone nodded their heads.
Right now he was the only Martial Grandmaster on the field and had the highest authority among them so everyone took his orders without a second thought.
After Arthur gave his orders, one of the Martial Masters at the front seemed to hesitate before asking.
"Sir... The Gargoyle..."
Knowing what he was asking about, Arthur didn’t explain much.
"The Gargoyle has been subdued and is now under the control of the hunter next to me."
Shocked gasps were heard throughout the street at his words but Arthur kept them focused on the task at hand, asking them to focus on the rescue of the civilians and let them know that all questions would be answered later.
....
Lake sat on the sidelines and rested with the Gargoyle beside him.
Because of its stone-like skin, the Gargoyle who stood unmoving looked like an actual statue for a moment.
The remaining hunters were carrying out the injured and weakened civilians before handing them over to the doctors that had set up a small clinic outside the theater.
There were originally more than 500 people among the audience when the play started, but after tonight, only a little over 430 walked out alive.
Almost seventy people.
That was the number of casualties sustained from the insane terrorist attack of Prestige.
Of those deaths, a portion of them had died in the aftershock of the Gargoyle and the woman’s battle.
In a way, Lake, who had sent the Gargoyle down, was responsible for their deaths. He knew that if the battle had begun, a lot of people were going to die.
He wasn’t sure in the first place if anyone else would have died after the Blood Moon had been burned away.
It didn’t seem like Prestige had any intentions of continuing to attack and was about to retreat, but he couldn’t be sure.
Even if they didn’t do anything and simply retreated after failing to achieve their goal, he wasn’t going to let that woman escape.
She destroyed the fates of close to fifty people and had stepped on his authority. It wasn’t something Lake was willing to overlook, even if it meant that a few people had to be sacrificed.
Lake also knew that he couldn’t stay here for long either.
Once it was found out that he had caused a few deaths in the audience because of his actions, he would most likely have to be put on trial by the Hunter Association.
As people walked out of the hall, Lake could see several of the audience looking at the Gargoyle with fear.
They had witnessed its prowess in battle and were terrified at the prospect of it standing so close to them.
However, hidden between all that fear, Lake could spot a few faces with an entirely different expression.
Hatred.
Among the audience, a lot of them came with family, and among those families, a few had died during the Gargoyle’s battle.
"..."
Lake’s expression turned stiff when he saw a familiar face.
"Of course, those two don’t separate no matter where they go..."
Walking with the help of a doctor, Lake could see Evelyn walking besides a stretcher carrying the unconscious Leah.
She had a deeply worried look on her face and despite the doctor’s insistence that she sat down and rested, she continued to follow the stretcher into the ambulance.
It seemed like the two would be heading to the city’s main hospital.
At that moment, whether it be coincidence or not, Evelyn turned her head and happened to lock eyes with Lake.
He didn’t know why, but he couldn’t bring himself to look her in the eyes and lowered his head to avoid eye contact.
Eventually, he sensed that Evelyn had looked away before walking into the ambulance and driving away.
"Fuck..."
With a long sigh, Lake looked up at the bright sky.
It was time to go.
Manipulating the mana in his body, he casted an invisibility spell on both the Gargoyle and himself as they disappeared from the streets.
