Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Soul Communication

As the ambulance drove off, Evelyn quietly descended into thought.

Looking at Leah who was sleeping peacefully, she recalled the figure of the black hooded man.

Once the Gargoyle started fighting with the leader of the terrorists, the auditorium descended into chaos and everyone was busy worrying about themselves.

The room was collapsing as a result of the shockwaves between the two and in the wake of their destruction, many people were either injured or killed.

However, despite all that, all she could do was worry about her only friend who had been blown away by the Gargoyle’s landing.

She couldn’t move or get up so all she could see from her seat was Leah’s body lying completely still on the floor.

Her heart was filled with panic as fear consumed her mind. In an instant, countless what ifs ran through her mind.

If something had happened to Leah as a result of trying to save her, Evelyn didn’t know if she could live with herself after that.

As her heart continued to race faster and faster as the worrying thoughts in her mind made her feel sick, she saw someone walk up to Leah.

It was the man that had mysteriously appeared in the auditorium and was most likely the reason why they had survived the night.

He rushed up to Leah before flipping her over and moving her to safety.

That simple action of checking on her friend and carrying her away from the battlefield instantly washed away all of her worries.

The sounds of battle seemed to fade in that moment as Evelyn felt her nervous heart greatly relax.

Neither the battle nor the fact that she was still in grave danger seemed to bother her.

Just knowing that her friend was safe was enough for her.

In the next instant however, she saw the strange man carry away the rest of the blast victims.

She realized that the man was trying to move everyone to safety and thought that Leah must have been lucky to be picked up first.

When a piece of the rubble was about to collapse and a few more people were about to die, she saw him launch a bright blue blast of light, blowing the rubble to pieces.

The explosion attracted the attention of the terrorist leader and caused her to fly over, most likely trying to kill him.

However, the man didn’t move. He stood perfectly still under the immense pressure that was crushing everyone else.

Evelyn wondered why he would do something like that.

He could clearly move and there was no benefit to standing his ground in that situation where the opponent was clearly stronger.

As she wondered why, she remembered the destruction left behind by the woman’s attacks.

She didn’t seem to care about the people in the audience at all. Her attacks, regardless of whether it hit its target or not, would leave behind the bodies of the victims within its range.

Remembering the unconscious body of Leah behind the man, fear filled her heart again.

Seeing the man standing his ground despite the danger, Evelyn felt a small sliver of hope bloom in her heart.

In that moment, Evelyn felt like she wasn’t looking at a man, but a shield, one that would protect people despite the danger brought unto himself.

What happened after had surpassed her expectation as a Martial Grandmaster made an appearance, solving the whole ordeal with a wave of his hand, but Evelyn didn’t think she would ever forget that image of someone standing up in the face of danger.

She thought to herself, that’s what a hero should be like. Someone who would protect and save people from the danger of the world.

As she was walking out of the building, she happened to see the same man sitting down next to the Gargoyle that had fought with the leader of the terrorists.

Despite the Gargoyle’s terrifying visage, he sat down with his back leaned forward with his hands clasped together while they rested on his knees.

In that instance, the two of them happened to cross eyes, but only for a brief moment.

’He looked... lost.’

Evelyn thought to herself as she remembered the look in his eyes.

His deep blue eyes showed a look of fatigue and confusion, leaving her to wonder what made him feel that way.

’Blue eyes... No. I shouldn’t think of him now.’

Remembering another figure, Evelyn sighed as she closed her eyes.

She didn’t feel it till now, but she really was exhausted after having gone through the whole ordeal.

....

After Lake had vanished into thin air along with the Gargoyle, panic quickly ensued among the hunters and civilians.

When a monster as powerful as the Gargoyle just vanished without leaving a trace behind in such a populated city, it was only natural for fear to envelop everyone.

The hunters instantly spread out to search the surroundings but they couldn’t find anything even after searching for hours.

Although the Gargoyle may have played a part in saving everyone tonight, it was still terrifying to think of such a monster roaming the city when its actual intentions remained unknown.

However, what left the hunters with an even greater headache was the fact that the only person capable of controlling the Gargoyle had also vanished.

A lot of questions needed to be answered after tonight’s incident and almost half of the questions related to Lake, who played the biggest role in spoiling the terrorists’ plans.

However, no matter how much they searched the city, it would be useless, as Lake was already embedded deep within the storm again.

....

Lake remained silent as he looked at the three demons before him.

The Gargoyle flapped its wings as it stared at Lake with an annoyed gaze.

The Imp was hovering around it, talking in an unfamiliar language. Lake didn’t know what the Imp was asking the Gargoyle, but it seemed that its presence greatly annoyed the Gargoyle.

As for the little demon girl, she was holding onto her red book tightly while she watched Lake with a cautious gaze.

Now that he had dealt with the immediate problem, he finally had the chance to properly go through these demons’ fate.

He first started with the demon girl.

Although Lake couldn’t understand the language spoken in her past, he roughly understood some key points.

The little girl before him was the daughter of a being akin to the Demon King of another world.

After a long war waged against humanity, the demon realm eventually lost and her father was slain by the hero of the humans.

She retreated to a secret bunker within the castle during the battle and had been hiding there ever since.

The bunker held enough food and supplies so that she wouldn’t have to leave even after ten years had passed.

Moreover, it contained a massive library with several books on magical theory, swordsmanship, common knowledge, and even a few books on the languages of the other world.

It seemed like the Demon King had fully prepared this bunker for his daughter in the off chance of his death.

The little demon girl spent a total of four years inside the bunker, reading the various books and eating away at the food slowly with her two companions, the Imp and the Gargoyle.

"Hmm..."

Lake was currently reading through her fate, trying to pick up on some small details that could help the two of them communicate better.

The current method of giving vague commands simply wouldn’t work in the long run, and Lake had experienced it himself a moment ago.

He had clearly given the command for the demon girl to attack the robed men in the auditorium, but she ended up only burning away the blood mist.

He wasn’t sure if it was intentional or she simply misunderstood his order, but either way, miscommunication would prove to be a risk that he may not be able to afford in the future.

After searching for a while, Lake finally found something that he could work with.

Stretching out his hand towards the little girl, Lake commanded plainly.

"Hand me the book."

The girl’s face turned pale as she held onto the book tighter.

However, this in itself was a bad decision as Lake sensed the King’s Aura in her body start to act up immediately after.

Knowing that she would be doomed if she continued to disobey any further, she reluctantly handed over the book.

Her eyes were puffy and red but she didn’t cry. Lake wasn’t sure whether it was because she held back or she had already cried so much that she couldn’t cry anymore.

Lake didn’t pay attention to the demon girl once she handed it over as he started flipping through the red book.

After going through her fate, Lake knew that this book was the little girl’s most prized treasure and the only source of security so he could understand her reluctance upon having to give it away.

The book itself was a powerful artifact of the other world that allowed one to cast powerful spells by just ripping the pages out of the book.

Unfortunately, he didn’t understand the language so he wasn’t too sure of what each spell did, but after a while, he found the effects of a few key spells.

One of the spells, the one he was looking for right now, had a unique effect that could make communication much easier.

He saw the Demon King use it once before when he had to speak to his army made up of countless races, each with their own unique language or form of communication.

A spell that allowed one to understand and communicate with others by ignoring all language barriers.

Soul Communication.

As soon as he found the page, Lake ripped it out, causing it to burst into a ball of flame as a purple mist seeped into his body.

Feeling the mysterious energy flowing through him, Lake carefully memorized the sensation to research the spell later.

If he could learn to cast it on his own, it would make his life a lot more convenient in the future.

Immediately after the effects of the spell kicked in, Lake could hear an annoying high pitched voice.

"....Hehe, come on, why don’t you tell me what happened down there?"

"You’ve even used your berserker state so something interesting must’ve happened, right?"

"Why aren’t you talking? Are you a statue or something?"

Lake stared blankly at the Imp hovering around the Gargoyle. He felt that if the Gargoyle’s skin wasn’t so dark and stone-like, he would’ve been seeing veins popping up on its forehead.
