Giant Black Ant

Having finished testing the [Thunder] skill for the time being, we descended from the 5th floor to the 6th floor of the dungeon.

"Hmm~, as expected, there wasn’t any boss-like enemy, huh?"

"Yeah, right? Maybe it went outside and got eaten by the Mega Big Boar or somethin’."

As a rough estimate, each set of five floors should have a boss-level monster. Not seeing one made Serai-san and Nina-san ponder the reason.

"Hmm. If it went outside, then that’s a possibility, I suppose."

To sustain that colossal boar’s massive frame, it’d need to eat a ridiculous amount.

Inside the mountain, there were likely several destroyed goblin settlements—probably wrecked by the giant boar. Following that logic, maybe the boss-level monsters in this mountain dungeon were also eaten by it.

"Well, the 'one every five floors' thing is just a rough guideline. Let’s proceed carefully, keeping in mind that a boss-level might still be lurking ahead."

"That’s true too."

After passing through the pitch-black passages connecting the descending floors, we found ourselves in a narrow earthen tunnel with zero visibility. Not only was it a straight path, but the width and height were inconsistent, and as far as we could see, it twisted left and right with plenty of ups and downs.

"Compared to the 1st floor, this one’s way more maze-like, huh?"

"Yeah. The sightlines are terrible too, so we’ll need to watch out for traps and ambushes."

As we were talking, rustling sounds from deeper in the tunnel signaled approaching monsters.

"Buhuhun!"

"Wait, wait, Masaru, don’t rush ahead. If you take the front, your huge body’ll block our view."

While I was holding Masaru back, the two girls covered the front.

"This feeling… kinda insect-like, no?"

"Yeah. Machi, start with the mucus, ’kay?"

"Got it, I know, I know… Ah, spotted ’em."

Mhm, mhm—seeing them so battle-hardened is seriously reassuring.

"...Ants, huh."

"Ants, yeah. Well, the big ones are, as usual."

Emerging from the depths of the tunnel was a large ant.

"Hmm, ants this time, huh?"

Size-wise, it was a little over a meter—bigger than a medium-sized dog but not as large as a big dog. Appearance-wise, it resembled the black garden ants you’d often see in parks or schoolyards.

"I’ll leave this to you two."

"Okey-dokey, leave it to us!"

As their coach, I was curious how they’d handle a new monster, so I decided to let them take charge. Given their rigorous training and countless life-or-death battles, there wasn’t a shred of worry they’d struggle against monsters at this depth.

"I’ll pin its legs with mucus."

"Then I’ll test if acid works on it."

The giant black ant, having noticed us, approached while waving its antennae. Nina-san struck first with a mucus bullet.

"Direct hit, Machi!"

"Here we go—[Acid Mist]!"

At about six meters away, the giant black ant, its legs tangled in mucus, was then hit by Serai-san’s acid fog.

But whether it was panicking from the mucus or suffering from the acid, its movements were hard to read.

"Doesn’t seem like the acid’s workin’."

"Guess not. Then let’s just punch it!"

Deciding the acid wasn’t effective, the two immediately split left and right, targeting the ant’s neck joint as they closed in.

"Taaah!"

[(Squelch)]

With focused attacks on the neck—the thin part connecting the head and body—the giant black ant was decapitated in one strike by a bone hammer and a Hyper Excalibur. A flawless battle, leveraging their combat experience and knowledge of insect weak points.

"Nice fight. That was well done."

"Ehehe~, right?"

And here, as is tradition in the dungeon, I patted their heads to reward them.

Killing always weighs on the heart. So by affirming their actions with praise, I help lighten that burden.
