Instant Death Attack

""[Stun Mucus]!""

""[Paralyze Mucus]!""

Now then, continuing with skill testing.

This time, it's a test to attack two mountain goblins simultaneously, each bound by slime. Well, for the mountain goblins being used as test subjects, it's nothing but a huge nuisance.

""Gyehp!?""

The mountain goblin bound by Nina-san's electrified slime whip stiffens from the shock, unable to move. Meanwhile, the paralysis effect delivered through my slime rope leaves the other goblin frozen in a surprised "〇su-san" pose.

Hmm… No matter how many times we try, it always ends up like this. Seriously, why?

""Hmm… But if we stop the effect, they recover right away.""

<figcaptionattachment__caption"">On the other hand, what Nina-san is concerned about is the duration of the effect.

The goblin shocked and paralyzed by the electricity staggers but tries to recover once the shocks stop. However, the mountain goblin hit by paralysis remains frozen in that ""Eeeh!?"" state.

""Well, your [Lightning] skill is still new. [Paralysis] is already level 4 for me.""

That said, I don’t plan on using it much in the future.

After all, for restraining or status effects, the [Slime] skill is more than enough. Well, it might come in handy against enemies with slime resistance, like giant centipedes, or when capturing targets alive.

But as things stand, this skill’s value is pretty limited.

""Lucky you two. All I’ve got for ranged attacks are [Acid] and [Slime].""

""Now, now, Serai-san. There’s a limit to how many skills you can learn. I’ve told you before, right? If you don’t pick skills that fit your combat style, you’ll struggle later.""

""Well, yeah, that’s true, but…""

Yeah, that’s the downside with skills.

If there were no limits, I’d have them learn every skill under the sun. But since there are, we have to choose carefully.

Skills:

[Strong Acid 2], [Agility 2], [Disease Resistance 7], [Usurpation], [Mucus 7], [Space 6], [Good Luck 1.4], [Footwork], [Meditation], [Salt 5], [Art], [Maggots 2], [Woman], [Martial Arts 6], [Paralysis 4], [Jump 9], [Sturdiness 8], [Charm]

Take me, for example. I’ve leveled [Disease Resistance], whose effects are unclear, as much as the useful [Slime] skill. That’s clearly a mistake. If I’d used those points on more practical skills or improving existing ones, it’d have been way better.

Well, it all depends on how you use them, but ideally, you’d want a cohesive set of useful skills. That’s why I’m careful about their skill choices—I don’t want them making the same mistakes I did.

""But man, it stays frozen for a long time.""

Nina-san zaps the goblin trying to get up again while eyeing the one paralyzed by my skill.

""Yeah. Even if I don’t use it much, status effects are its specialty. It’s not for direct attacks, but once it lands, it’s way stronger than you’d think.""

Mm, though it’s a different category, the mental interference skill [Charm] is also pretty potent when it works.

""Oh, come on~. Knowing you, Egetsu-san, you’ve probably got some hidden trick up your sleeve, right?""

Serai-san pokes the paralyzed goblin with her bone hammer as she says this.

""A hidden trick? Nah, not with [Paralysis]. …Wait, actually. What if I concentrated the paralysis effect on a single body part?""

""Huh? Like when your legs go numb from sitting seiza-style?""

""Sounds like a fun experiment.""

""Hmm, let’s try it. …Here goes! Legs only—Paralyze!""

By manipulating the magic to focus the paralysis on the lower body, the goblin’s upper body is freed, and it starts screaming angrily. But its legs remain stiff, leaving it stuck in place.

(Ah… I’ve seen this kind of thing before.)

Like when a shonen manga villain disables an enemy’s senses one by one while dominating them.

(But the experiment’s a success. Hmm… So, could I focus the paralysis on the heart, for example…?)

""[Heart Attack]! Hnng…!""

I manipulate the magic further, concentrating the paralysis solely on the heart. The goblin, now freed elsewhere, clutches its chest in agony.

""Gyah!? Mugigi…!? Giii…hk!!""

Its voice cuts off as its eyes roll back, knees buckling before it collapses, foaming at the mouth—dead.

""…Wha—!? That’s brutal!""

""Whoa, that’s an instant kill…""

""Huh? W-Wait, what!?""

I can’t help but panic at the unexpected result of this spur-of-the-moment test. Breaking news: the [Paralysis] skill apparently allows for instant death attacks.
