Chapter 1348: 455. Marsh and the Giant Serpent - Additional Update for Brother "Warm Wine Farewell" [21/25]_2
In the sky, a few bipedal dragons adorned with clan armor carried Tear Flesh and a few of his trusted subordinates high above for reconnaissance, simultaneously making real-time adjustments to the battle situation below.
They had officially entered the Swamp Forbidden Area now.
But the first to leap out and attack them were not the legendary Swamp Giant Snakes; instead, it was a gaggle of wild beasts living in the marshland, from huge crocodiles to Swamp Tigers and the ferocious blood-sucking spiders and venomous bats—the marsh was erupting with dangerous creatures all at once.
There was no hint of cooperation or command among them; they attacked purely by instinct, but the sheer numbers did indeed cause some trouble for the advance of the Undead Army.
This unexpected encounter was, in fact, a scourge wrought by the Jackal Warlocks themselves.
For years around the village of Pestilence, they had been waking the undead of the marsh on a massive scale and mindlessly disposing of construction tower waste, causing the ecological system of this region’s marshland to be utterly devastated. The local beasts had been forced to migrate.
At present, it seemed that most of the marshland beasts had moved into the forbidden zone, where they had established a new food chain that let their populations thrive. Tear Flesh even spotted some gigantic individual creatures among the Swamp Tigers attacking the vanguard. Applying the strength system of humanoid creatures, these were beasts of the Black Iron Tier. There were even more dangerous elite individuals roaming among the herd.
"The power source of the creatures in this marsh has always been a mystery."
Sitting on the saddle of the bipedal dragon, Old Wolf Man squinted his murky eyes, thinking:
"When we first came here, there were even cases of Barbarian Soldiers being snatched away by crocodiles that appeared out of nowhere. It’s hard to say how many unique individuals are hidden in this marshland; it wouldn’t surprise me if a silver-rank gigantic beast were to emerge.
No matter how you look at it, this doesn’t seem to be a naturally formed ecology. Even in the Dark Mountain Range, there has never been a mass appearance of so many elite beasts gathering.
Ah, if it weren’t for the mission I bear, the mysteries and truths hidden beneath the superficial grime of the Polluted Swamp would indeed be worth exploring."
"What are you thinking about?"
Just as Tear Flesh was contemplating, a hoarse voice suddenly sounded from beside him, causing the Old Wolf Man to turn his head and glance over.
Hovering beside his bipedal dragon was a luxurious and wide "magic carpet". The fine leather, exquisitely woven Runes, and the pearls tasseled around its contours endowed this flying Spiritual Energy vehicle with a fantastical charm.
The driver of the carpet sat cross-legged upon it.
That was a person covered by a red hood, even their fingertips hidden in fully-covering gloves.
But judging by the figure, it was apparent this was a man, with a teapot still cooking beside him and incense releasing blue smoke. He even held a book in his hands, appearing less like someone who came to wage war and more like a Psychic on an outing.
Upon closer inspection, the book in the mysterious person’s hands bore the title "Cape Travelogue: Traveling with Vampires."
Tch, there goes Colonel Fraser’s "wild fan" then.
This enigmatic person was indeed the one "Origin" had sent to aid the Pestilence Clan, but Tear Flesh didn’t like him. Aside from the Old Wolf Man’s wariness of the Twilight forces, Tear Flesh could sense a dangerous air about this individual.
Though the person was also a silver-rank Psychic, just like himself, Tear Flesh guessed that, should a conflict arise, he probably wouldn’t stand a chance against this person.
The servants of Twilight all possess various bizarre abilities that are not bestowed by the material world.
Facing this man’s question, Tear Flesh replied calmly,
"I am just pondering the truth of this marsh. I can feel its secret is no less intricate than the Jackalwolf treasure we seek."
"Congratulations, Mister Tear Flesh, your intuition is correct."
The Psychic sitting on the magic carpet let out a faint chuckle, saying,
"But I would advise you not to delve too deeply. The truth of the Polluted Swamp is beyond your grasp; in fact, its origins are far greater than you could imagine. My visit is not only to help you obtain the treasure of the King of Bone Biting but also to fulfill a task entrusted by my organization.
I must retrieve something from the source of the marsh for my group.
Once I have done so, this swamp will lose all its wonder and secrecy, ensuring it no longer poses an obstacle to the advance of the Black Disaster into Transylvania.
You see, the main reason your first four attempts at the Black Disaster could not break through to the Continent was largely due to the impediments of the Polluted Swamp.
Even the King of Bone Biting failed to conquer this marshland...
By the way, don’t you ever wonder why the perfect chieftain born of the Jackalwolf Tribe had to enter the Polluted Swamp when he faced defeat?"
The mysterious Psychic spoke with a subtle tone,
"It wasn’t out of despair that he fled here. According to the information I have, at that time, the King of Bone Biting still had the last squad of Forbidden Guards, blessed by The Master of Hunting, which alone could’ve broken through the encirclement and returned to Moss Valley.
But he didn’t do so.
Instead, he threw what little strength he had left into this Swamp Forbidden Area. So, tell me, Mister Tear Flesh, why do you think your king made such a mad move at his direst moment?"
This question made Tear Flesh pause, but promptly, the Jackal Warlock said in a low voice:
