Chapter 184: First Epic

"Aihh...that midget takes years off my life..." Hal complained inwardly, shaking his head as he entered the small tent designated for him after reporting his progress to Zephyron.

There was nothing but the brownish-red ground, a sleeping bag, a small chair, and a small table inside.

He had asked Ennya how their first day of clearing went.

As he expected, it couldn’t be further from the word smooth.

She went ahead and showed off, telling her subordinates to support her from the back, only to force them to move and deal with the other Fell Beasts when she got stuck fighting four at once, resulting in a few injuries.

But it was about what Hal expected from her.

Heck, he himself didn’t know how to lead a platoon, and the empire had just given them one that would follow their every whim.

It was a rather unconventional and ruthless way of teaching them to be leaders.

After all, it was highly likely that the poor youngsters would die under the command of an inexperienced leader.

But this was the very essence of it: to engrave leadership lessons into the hearts of the Magna Prospects, with the blood of their subordinates as payment.

Naturally, Hal gave her a few harsh reprimands.

She can’t keep risking the lives of her subordinates like what she did today, and the Fire Platoon members who heard him felt utterly grateful to the Dragon Whisperer.

"Haaah... let’s hope she does better tomorrow..." Hal sighed, then forcibly stopped himself from thinking about Ennya’s poor leadership.

It wasn’t like he had performed all that well today, either.

Plopping down on the chair, Hal snapped his fingers, prompting the system screen to appear.

Excitement washed over him as he navigated to the quests section.

He hadn’t had a chance to be alone in the past few days, so he hadn’t been able to claim his permanent-durability, epic-tier card from Act One of the Felling the Fell questline.

Hal tapped on the [Claim] button, replacing the current window with an unexpectedly huge one, showcasing a huge selection of epic-tier cards.

’H-Holy crap...’

He was slightly overwhelmed at the sheer variety, not expecting that there were so many mighty spells, and yet, he had never seen one.

At least none he recognized.

He quickly tapped on the first card on the window to see its effects:

==

Card Name: Sunsmite

Rarity: Epic

Type: Elemental Spell

Durability: Permanent

Cooldown: 20 seconds

Chaos Karma cost: 150

Description: Summons an almost undetectable ray of concentrated flame from the sun, annihilating a target with a smite that seems to come from the heavens themselves.

==

Hal breathed heavily, almost impulsively pressing on the [Claim] button beneath the card information.

He barely managed to stop himself from doing so, reminding himself that there could be other, better options.

He continued tapping away at each card, his eyes widening repeatedly at their mind-boggling effects.

There was an ice elemental spell that allowed him to summon an icy domain where other elements couldn’t thrive, a spell that summoned nine lethal rays of multicolored light, each rivaling the power of [Radiant Decimation], a spell that summoned ten earthen meteors simultaneously, and many more of similar caliber.

Each would be extremely helpful in the operation to wipe out the Fell Beasts migrating from Parralen Valley, and Hal could already imagine the glorious scene of himself eliminating a significant number using them.

Nonetheless, he desperately fought the urge to select one of them without going through all the spell cards available.

Perhaps there would be better options.

Soon, Hal came across a strange spell card:

==

Card Name: Winter’s Grasp

Rarity: Epic

Type: Elemental Spell

Durability: Permanent

Cooldown: 2 seconds

Chaos Karma cost: 30

Description: Freezes the opponent’s blood for half a second. Duration increases with the caster’s mastery of the spell.

==

It wasn’t some fancy spell that would instantly annihilate a target or a glorious area of effect spell that could eliminate multiple enemies in a mere second.

However, it was a spell that literally made his blood run cold after simply reading its description.

Hal didn’t know what the actual effect of the spell would be in combat, but he believed he could at least momentarily paralyze the opponent.

At least, that was all his brain could come up with...

It was a spell that could grant him a chance at victory even against opponents he normally wouldn’t be able to defeat, or even allow him to fight one versus two against opponents that were equal to him, as he could already think of multiple uses for it, one of which was interrupting an enemy’s spell.

Hal swallowed.

In the end, he took a deep breath and continued checking the other cards first.

’No rush, no rush...’

The next few spells sounded far mightier than [Winter’s Grasp], but Hal somehow couldn’t forget that one spell card.

Even the spells that allowed him to stop time within a set spherical range didn’t sound all that good to him, mainly due to their cooldowns and mana costs.

[Winter’s Grasp], with the shortest cooldown and lowest mana cost in the entire selection, combined with its effects, seemed like the best choice for the current Hal.

His intuition desperately screamed for him to choose the spell card.

’F*ck it. I’ll be able to obtain more spell cards in the future anyway. I’m picking the one my heart and brain are telling me to pick!’

And so, a few seconds later.

[Congratulations! You have obtained an [Epic]-tier card!]

Hal’s heart raced wildly as he slotted it into one of his gesture slots.

Coincidentally, the most diabolical among them seemed to beckon him to place the spell there.

Hal imagined paralyzing someone with a vicious middle finger, and he almost couldn’t contain his laughter.

’Hahahaha!! Yes!! What slot could be more fitting?’ he mused with a devious grin.

Hal desperately wanted to try the spell card out, but unfortunately, it was dark and dangerous outside.

’Aihh...damn it, I can’t sleep like this!’

He ultimately ended up working out inside his tent to burn off the extra energy coursing through his body, then washed up at the camp’s large bathing tent, which had a dozen bathing partitions, before doing what he could to drift off to dreamland.

He would test the epic-tier spell’s effects tomorrow...
