Chapter 185: Day Two

A horn suddenly sounded, waking Hal up.

He hadn’t had the greatest sleep, but he’d gotten a decent rest, at the very least.

Stretching lightly, Hal heard serene sounds he rarely heard in the empire.

’Oh? It’s raining?’ he mused, flapping the tent covers open.

It was indeed raining lightly.

There wasn’t any problem with convenience, as the military uniforms had waterproof hoodies that could be tightened and combat goggles to protect one’s eyes from the rain.

The only issue was the reduced visibility.

Unfortunately, when he scanned the camp, there seemed to be no changes, and everyone appeared to be doing what was assigned to them.

There were even companies of imperial army soldiers pushing out Manatech Artillery to set it up in the valley.

’Hmm...well, I thought as much...’

They had no choice but to continue clearing the marked locations, despite the rather disadvantageous weather conditions.

The only change was that there was now another tent that stood a hundred meters adjacent to his, where food was being served...

The camp didn’t have a fixed meal schedule, as not all soldiers had the same tasks, especially the sentries and those stationed in the valley.

However, the army had a way to ensure that each soldier could only grab another military serving of food after six hours had passed.

This was done through a mana mark that had no other effect but to remain on the body for six hours before disappearing.

Once the mana mark disappears, a soldier could claim a meal.

Hal brushed his teeth and washed his face before queuing up at the tent, spotting Rocky and Hao ahead, though the bespectacled squadron leader seemed to have arrived considerably earlier.

After having a nice breakfast of a chunk of pork meat roast, a side of veggies, steamed rice, and a cup of coffee with his underlings, Hal was ready to start the day.

The Chaos Platoon assembled in front of Hal’s tent, counting off in the rain before heading out.

The members weren’t as uneasy this time.

After all, they survived a tough situation yesterday.

Their confidence and morale were certainly on a higher level today.

Walking through the muddy ground of the redwood forest, Hal was determined to try and clear four camps today.

Not only would this allow him to earn more Chaos Points, but it would also help the Imperial Army suffer far fewer casualties when the day of the ambush came.

Fewer families would also lose their loved ones that way...

Around half an hour later, they arrived at the marked locations they had cleared yesterday.

Hal quickly surveyed the surroundings again with the Spirit Sparrow, as it was a part of their job, before proceeding to another marked location they hadn’t cleared yet after confirming that the areas were still devoid of Fell Beasts.

Soon, a fairly huge pond came into view, slightly mesmerizing the Chaos Platoon members as the sun’s warm rays were reflected by its decently clear waters.

It seemed to be quite shallow, used only by the beasts around to rehydrate and perhaps wash their massive bodies.

"Ahh, damn it... Look at this beautiful location, boss," Rocky lamented. "How about we clear this place quickly and have a barbecue here later? Fell Beast meat doesn’t look too appetizing, but it’s edible, right? We just need to season it properly, roast it over a fire, then we can drink a few beers while munching and enjoying the view, yeah? Ahh...but we don’t have seasoning..."

Hal didn’t respond, simply scanning the area before summoning his Spirit Sparrow.

This dampened Rocky’s mood a little, as he thought his great relaxation plan had been rejected.

What was wrong with enjoying an hour or two of relaxation at an outdoor spot with a nice view after finishing their quota for the day?

Hal’s eyes remained closed for more than ten minutes, his subordinates keeping watch as he surveyed the area.

’There’s one...two...’

’Three...’

...Hal’s focus was laser-sharp, especially since some of the Fell Beasts were hard to spot.

They were, after all, mostly stationary, feeding on the land’s mana for most of the day to the point that a small patch of ground would turn dry, gray, and cracked, as though it had decayed.

He had checked the spot where the Fell Redlands Bush Hog had been feeding earlier, and it was still the same; it hadn’t recovered.

While a few creatures continued feeding on their natural diets, like underground roots, it seemed this was no longer necessary for survival.

All they needed was mana to survive, thanks to the Fell Core installed in them by the Fellkin.

Another minute later, Hal opened his eyes, taking a deep breath as he turned to face his subordinates.

"There are five Fell Beasts in the area, and the nearest one is just behind that massive rock over there, with a redwood tree right beside it. I don’t know what most of them are, so I think it’s better if we check first, identify all of them with Hao’s help, then clear the area," Hal said, earning a nod from Hao.

The bespectacled squadron leader approved of the plan, even looking a bit pleased that the platoon leader valued his knowledge highly.

And so, for the next fifteen minutes, the Chaos Platoon moved around the marked location, with Hal and Hao sneaking closest to the Fell Beasts.

According to the knowledgeable squadron leader, there were two C-ranked Fell Beasts, two D-ranked, and one E-ranked.

Fortunately, the ones closest to their current location were the C-ranked beasts.

They were the perfect target for Hal, who wanted to test his new spell.

Returning to his platoon members, he declared:

"There’s a new arrangement I want to try. Yhohan Squad, eliminate the E-ranked Fell Flametongue Chameleon south of our location. Hao and Rocky Squads, your squadrons will work together to take out the C-ranked Fell Razorspine Marcher. It’s strong and tough, but slow. Just take your time, and you should be able to defeat it without too much trouble. Hal Squadron, follow me."
