Chapter 183: The Dragon Whisperer
Chapter 183: The Dragon Whisperer
Beneath the dimming skies, purple blood splattered as a massive python fell to the brownish-red ground of a redwood forest, its body spasming lifelessly a few meters from its severed head.
Hal and his platoon members wiped the sweat off their faces, some breathing more heavily than the others.
"That should be it...three marked locations cleared..." Hal muttered. "But just to be sure..."
He quickly summoned his Spirit Sparrow and did one last round of reconnaissance in the area.
Only after confirming that there were no other Fell Beasts did he dismiss the tiny summon.
"We’ve cleared the area. Let’s harvest these Fell Cores and return to camp."
The biting night was fast approaching, so they had to move quickly.
Stronger beasts become more active at night, after all, and they didn’t want to encounter one on their first day.
As the Wind Magna said, they had legs and could move.
Who could say the monsters they encountered would always be within their capabilities?
Fortunately, aside from Hao’s close call, nothing of the sort happened.
They were able to harvest the last Fell Beast’s Fell Core and return to the valley just as the heavenly canvas turned dark.
Walking back to camp, a savory aroma assaulted the Chaos Platoon’s olfactory senses, causing Rocky’s stomach to rumble in protest.
It seemed dinner had already been served, and that it was good.
Just as the battle camp came into view, so did another platoon, returning from their clearing mission, with a red-haired midget at the helm of the formation.
Hal’s brows raised, and a smile subconsciously appeared on his face.
He was glad that Ennya got through her first day just fine, though some of her subordinates seemed injured and needed treatment from the army’s medic wizards.
"Ennya!" He called out, prompting the midget to turn.
It was clear that she was bewildered.
After all, how could she not recognize Hal’s voice?
"Hal?! Why are you here?!" she responded in an almost shrieking manner, finding it hard to believe that her childhood friend was also here.
Ennya quickly turned and walked over, her platoon following her like a wary tail.
They shot curious gazes at Hal.
Unlike the Chaos Platoon, they didn’t have an inkling of who he was, but seeing that he was leading his own platoon and was familiar with their leader...
’A Magna Prospect...’
That was the thought in the minds of the Fire Platoon members.
Ennya, on the other hand, couldn’t seem to connect the dots.
"Oh, I figured there was a chance, but your master didn’t tell you, huh? I became a Magna Prospect a few days ago and was assigned to the same mission as you," Hal explained with a grin, waiting for the midget’s reaction.
’I guess Zephyron didn’t either...’
Sure enough...
"What?! You’re also a Magna Prospect now?!" Ennya exclaimed in disbelief. "Well... you did win the Arcana Primis Cup, but didn’t you just use your wits to do so? I watched your matches, and your spells are weak as heck! Why did the empire even assign you as a Magna Prospect this soon?"
Hal almost choked on his saliva at the rather straightforward comment.
The darned midget dared insult the power of his spells?!
"W-Wha... hey! My spells might not be as strong as yours, but they match up just fine against the others our age! I’d even dare say some of my spells are stronger than theirs! Also, look who’s talking. Aren’t you just relying on your Ifrit’s Core the whole time?! The moment your opponent uses their brain, you get taken out!" Hal argued back indignantly, using her match against Pierro as a reference.
"W-What did you say?! I–"
Ennya was about to retort, but Hal already knew the midget wouldn’t let him get the last word in and that the argument wouldn’t end.
So, he smoothly retrieved the rare-tier, mastercraft-grade fire elemental wand from the system’s inventory, masterfully distracting Ennya as it appeared in his hands.
"Hmph. I was about to give you a rare-tier, mastercraft-grade fire elemental wand out of concern, but you insulted me. I guess this stays with me, then!" Hal said in a rather crafty and petty attempt to stop her, causing a ripple in the midget’s heart.
Ennya knew that she had indeed started the argument by calling Hal’s spells weak...
In the end, her greed for good stuff got the better of her.
Her master, for the first time, had given her a decent weapon: a rare-tier, superior-grade fire elemental staff.
But a mastercraft-grade wand was still one grade higher, right?
Why wouldn’t she want it?
It wasn’t like she hadn’t let Hal get away with his words in the past, so if she had to do it in exchange for such an artifact...
It was a no-brainer!
"Hahahaha! What do you mean I insulted you? I didn’t mean it that way! I... I’m just not good with words. Sorry, okay? Now, can I see the wand?" Ennya forced out a laugh, scratching her head awkwardly.
Hal naturally realized that she was just being shameless.
However, this had been his objective in the first place.
He would have given the wand to Ennya regardless of what happened anyway, and shutting her up in exchange for it was a well-worth trade for him.
"Here." Hal handed the artifact over.
"Hehehe, thanks for looking out for me, Hal!" the midget said in gratitude, immediately proceeding to inspect the wand.
Meanwhile, the Fire Platoon members feigned a composed exterior, but inwardly, they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
Ennya Kasai...apologized?
There was just no way.
Of course, the members couldn’t help but inspect Hal in secret, some even giving him a nickname in their minds: "The Dragon Whisperer."
A few moments later...
"Hahahaha! Thank you for the wand, Hal! You truly understand my needs. Casting spells will be a lot faster for me now!" Ennya laughed, turning to her platoon members.
"You guys are dismissed. Let’s continue tomorrow. I’ll just chat with my friend here."
She then turned to Hal and continued:
"Come, Hal, let’s have dinner together. I heard from Sir Stiff Face that we’re having fried chicken tonight!"
