Chapter 576: Escape from Death
Chapter 576: Chapter 576: Escape from Death
The lights went out, leaving the dilapidated room engulfed in darkness, where only the silhouettes of various furnishings could be vaguely discerned.
Amidst the darkness, Han Fei listened to the sound of his own heartbeat, his gaze slowly shifting towards his phone.
"I wonder if she’ll call again."
This wasn’t the first time Han Fei had been pursued by hatred, but the feeling of knowing that hatred was drawing near, yet being unable to hide, still made him somewhat uncomfortable.
His family members had all gone to sleep, leaving only Han Fei tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
"When I left work at dusk, I glanced back at the plastic surgery hospital. The lit rooms seemed to become the white eyeballs of the night. This city has already started to mutate, and the place where the shrine once stood is the center of this mutation."
With his limbs all tucked under the covers, Han Fei only exposed his eyes, carefully alert to his surroundings.
"Right now, I have two chances to open the Item Bar, and the two most crucial items—the Rebirth Saber and the Blood-colored Paperman—are both at my disposal. I’m not completely without a chance to resist."
If it were any other Shrine Memory World, Han Fei would have already taken out the Blood-colored Paperman and kept it close to him, but in this Shrine Memory World, he dared not do so. Something felt off.
The ticking of the clock on the wall was heard in the room, and a little past one in the morning, the screen of Han Fei’s phone, lying on the coffee table, suddenly lit up.
Han Fei’s muscles tensed instantly, and he slowly adjusted his body.
Stretching an arm out from under the blanket, Han Fei could feel a chill enveloping his limb, as if the temperature inside the room had dropped much lower than during the daytime.
Picking up the phone, Han Fei saw the caller ID.
"Zhao Qian? Why is she calling me at this time?"
After hesitating for a moment, Han Fei answered the call, "President Zhao, is there something you need from me?"
"The police have investigated two locations, the company and your home, and they’ve reviewed all nearby surveillance, they’ve discovered something very terrifying!" Zhao Qian spoke quickly. Her calling in the early hours alone indicated she was dealing with an urgent matter.
"What happened?"
"Something is looking for you! When that thing entered the company, it stayed right at your workstation. Then, it went to your home. You are it’s real target!" Zhao Qian was very anxious, "I know this is hard for you to understand, but you better go somewhere crowded right now!"
"Where can I find a crowded place at one in the morning?" Han Fei was about to offer Zhao Qian some reassuring words, telling her not to panic, when suddenly another woman’s voice appeared on the phone alongside Zhao Qian’s!
I’ve called you so many times and you never answered, but now you seem so engaged in conversation with another woman...
Why haven’t you come to see me now that I’m this sick...
Our child said the person he dislikes the most is his father...
The cold voice, like a hook lock, instantaneously pierced through Han Fei’s ears. Han Fei, with phone in hand, felt his hairs stand on end.
Looking down, he saw that Zhao Qian’s name on the call was slowly being drenched in blood, mutating bit by bit.
"Fu Yi? Why did you suddenly fall silent?"
Fu Yi, you used to love me so much, yet later you couldn’t even spare the time to talk to me...
"Are you still there? That thing might have already gone to find you! It always appears after midnight!"
You forgot your vow, you’ve become a monster, you should leave with me...
"Fu Yi! Can you hear me talking? Believe me, don’t stay alone in your room!"
Fu Yi, can you hear my voice? Didn’t you promise to take good care of our child? Why have you allowed him to bear the most tragic fate?
Didn’t you ask me to trust you? To believe you could raise Fu Sheng healthy? But why have you brought upon him the most desperate life?
A shrill scream erupted from the phone, prompting Han Fei to hastily hang up.
"Fu Sheng’s mother’s hatred for me has already reduced by three points, but even with a three-point reduction, she’s still like this. If it hadn’t decreased, would she come up to kill me immediately?"
Clutching the phone, Han Fei sat up from the sofa, but that woman’s terrifying voice sounded again.
"Maybe he’d live a better life after your death..."
Turning his head towards the phone, Han Fei was horrified to discover that the voice wasn’t coming from the phone at all, but from the direction of the door.
His body launched forth like an arrow, as Han Fei explosively unleashed his thirty-two points of Physical Strength.
Normally, it would take less than a second for him to enter Fu Sheng’s room, but in this critical moment, his brain seemed to explode! The long-suppressed searing pain burst violently, and Fu Yi’s ferocious face put immense pressure on every nerve of Han Fei, getting clearer and clearer, and the disgusting noises from his mouth seemed to imply that killing Han Fei could absolve him of all his sins.
Falling to the ground, Han Fei saw black blood seeping from under the living room door, and the door lock began to turn on its own.
The face inside his head chuckled with schadenfreude, and Han Fei felt the Fu Yi hidden in his mind rapidly spreading to other parts of his body. He was proliferating, consuming Han Fei’s body.
Blood that flowed from his mouth and nose dropped to the ground as his eyes bulged unnaturally outward, as if someone was pressing from the inside.
The black blood under the door spread across the floor like a host of black serpents crawling towards Han Fei.
As the door lock’s spring clicked, the old security door was slowly pushed open.
A faint scent of blood joined the air, all the lights in the corridor went out, and in the darkness a red shadow stood at the entrance.
Every sound was suppressed by a force, even the clock seemed to have stopped ticking, and in this absolute silence, the red shadow slowly moved forward.
Black blood coiled around his wrists, and for the first time since entering the Memory World, Han Fei truly felt the threat of death.
The sharpness of hatred fell on his skin like a scalpel, that stabbing pain piercing straight to his soul, making life unbearable.
"Hatred! She is genuine, pure Hatred!"
In front of Hatred, Han Fei didn’t stand a chance of escaping; he couldn’t even manage to move his body, as if it were frozen, completely unable to control himself.
"I once thought that as long as you were alive, Fu Sheng would be happy, but later I realized, you might just be the source of his suffering."
A hoarse voice rose beside Han Fei’s ear. Glancing out of the corner of his eye, he saw a woman in red appearing within the old house, standing right beside him.
Her skeletal body was covered in wounds left by illness; she suffered countless agonies when she left this world, but because of her attachment to her child, she still could not break free after death.
Time and again, she heard the calls and cries of Fu Sheng, who, although alive in the mortal world and having a father and a new family, still missed her incessantly.
The thread of longing carried Fu Sheng’s voice and prayers, reaching out to the wrist of the mother who plunged into the Nether River.
She knew she should leave, but as she saw Fu Sheng gradually sink into despair and completely shut himself off, blood-red flowers sprouted from her parched heart; her gentleness and kindness were devoured, her obsession turning into barb-filled Hatred, and a frightful Monster clawed its way out of her tender heart.
Holding onto the thread of Fu Sheng’s longing, she crossed countless crossroads and returned to her home once more.
"Leave with me."
Scrawny fingers stretched out from the red garment, the woman grabbing Han Fei’s hand.
The fingers clenched, the woman holding onto Han Fei’s soul. As she prepared to drag him away, she seemed to sense something and hesitated for a moment.
At that moment, footsteps sounded from the adjoining bedroom.
"Wait a second!"
The woman in red raised her head, her dried-up face turning toward the bedroom as Fu Sheng appeared at the doorway.
They locked eyes, Fu Sheng seeing the Ghost he most wanted to see, while the woman instinctively covered her now unrecognizable face.
Fu Sheng ran forward, his speed increasing.
All the Hatred gently moved aside for Fu Sheng; the sinister air quickly faded, leaving a warm emptiness as if it were a hug she gave to Fu Sheng.
The twisted darkness returned to normal, and by the time Fu Sheng reached the woman, the woman in red and the black blood on the floor had completely vanished, only the half-opened living room door testified that she had been there.
Too impatient to put on shoes, Fu Sheng ran out barefoot, the corridor empty and devoid of any presence.
He instinctively ran towards the staircase, but suddenly, as if remembering something, he stopped and turned back into the room.
"Wake up! Are you okay?"
Fu Sheng lifted Han Fei off the ground, looking at his face covered in fresh blood, somewhat panicked.
The wife in the bedroom also heard the noise and hurriedly ran out.
"Call 120 quickly!" The wife picked up the phone to dial, but Han Fei struggled to grab her arm.
"No need for the hospital." Han Fei leaned back against the sofa, sitting on the floor. He was very clear about one thing.
If they went to the hospital and his wife and Fu Sheng knew the diagnosis, even if they seemed happy on the surface, the home would never be the same.
Barely having held their fractured home together, and only just managing to preserve that bit of happiness, Han Fei truly didn’t have the heart to shatter it himself.
He wanted to leave as many good memories for Fu Sheng as possible, not to plunge his family back into suffering.
Besides, Han Fei was very clear on another point: as long as he completed the Shrine task quickly, some things might not happen at all.
"How can you not go to the hospital looking like this?" His usually gentle wife was very firm in this instance, but as she dialed the number, Han Fei slowly stood up.
The usually decisive Han Fei was exceptionally gentle this time. He pressed down on his wife’s phone-dialing hand, wiping the blood from his face, "It’s really nothing serious, there’s no need to go to the hospital late at night. If you don’t believe me, I’ll go to the hospital myself tomorrow."
While the wife hesitated, Fu Tian also opened his room door, "What are you guys doing?"
"Nothing, go back to sleep." Han Fei washed his face in the bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror.
Pale red droplets slid down his cheeks, and Han Fei suddenly closed the bathroom door, staring intently at the man in the mirror, his fingers clenching tightly.
"Rebirth!"
A Slaughter Saber appeared in Han Fei’s hand; he looked at the dazzling blade and then swung it towards his own head!
