Chapter 555: The Warmest Moment
Chapter 555: Chapter 555: The Warmest Moment
"Player ID 0000, please note! The ’Righteous Hero’ title effect has been successfully activated, you have saved the sick girl and earned a large amount of experience rewards."
The system’s prompt echoed in his ears, but Han Fei’s attention was entirely focused on the girl.
"Is your name Fu Yi?"
The girl’s name sounded the same as Fu Yi, and her surname was also the same; it was highly likely that she was Fu Yi’s illegitimate daughter.
Originally squatting on the ground, Han Fei felt somewhat dizzy. His legs softened, and he sat down directly on the floor of the rental room.
In the past, when he faced female friends who wanted to kill him, he kept reassuring himself that everything would be fine once he got through this, that there could be no more difficult situations than these.
It took a Herculean effort to drain his Master-level Acting to barely stabilize the situation, only for fate to gift him another "surprise"; no new woman appeared, but a girl did.
Big eyes staring at small eyes, Han Fei looked at the girl who had tried to kill him several times, with a very complex expression.
"I see your leg muscles are atrophied, you can’t walk normally. What kind of illness is this?"
"Progressive Muscular Dystrophy. The doctor said it’s caused by a genetic mutation," the girl optimistically said, not losing faith in life because of her illness. She not only fought against her illness but had a particularly kind heart, as proven by her attempt to rescue the injured stray cat despite the risks.
"How much money is needed to cure this illness?"
"I don’t know, my mom never told me. She just asked me not to worry, saying it seems to gradually get better."
With that, Han Fei outwardly sighed in relief, his face breaking into a smile, while he secretly took out his phone to check.
Progressive Muscular Dystrophy is irreversible. Many children who suffer from the disease gradually lose their ability to move, and as the disease worsens, most of them leave the world in their twenties due to respiratory failure or heart failure.
In other words, once diagnosed with this disease, life has essentially begun its countdown.
Activating the Master-level Acting mode in his mind, Han Fei’s expression remained unchanged, but his fingers clasping the phone turned somewhat pale.
"When will your mom come back?"
"I don’t know. She just brought me here a while ago, saying that it’s easier to find work and the treatment conditions are better in the big city. These past few days, she’s been leaving early and returning late, working very hard," the girl said, showing concern for her mother. Her eyes filled with self-blame: "If it weren’t for me, mom definitely would be living a happier life."
"You must not think like that."
"I know." The girl smiled at Han Fei, her smile especially sweet: "So I will try hard to get better soon and take good care of her when I grow up."
Han Fei didn’t speak and gently tidied the girl’s messy hair.
The girl did not resist. It was as if she had seen Han Fei somewhere before; when speaking with Han Fei, her voice was very gentle, as though she feared that Han Fei would suddenly leave.
"This is the place! Boss! Hurry up here!" Noisy footsteps came from outside, and the hotel front desk staff along with a couple ran up to the fourth floor. They were holding mops and brooms, warily staring at Han Fei.
"I should probably go now, this is my mobile number, call me if you run into any trouble. Once I have dealt with the things around me, I will come back to find you." Han Fei picked up a pen and paper, wrote down his mobile number, and then raised both hands as he walked towards the door, "Don’t misunderstand, I have no ill intentions. I just saw that girl downstairs in danger, so I rushed up to save her. I will compensate you for the damaged door lock."
"Don’t be violent! Don’t be violent! I can prove it! This man is an undercover officer from the police station! He was the one who saved that child just now." The middle-aged bookstore boss ran upstairs, gasping for breath, "It’s lucky someone was at home, otherwise there would have been another casualty in this building."
Han Fei didn’t bother to argue with the motel boss. After paying for the lock, he returned to the girl’s side, "Do you remember the student who came looking for you today? Where did he go after he left?"
"My mother didn’t take his money and even scolded him. In the end, he secretly left the money and left. I don’t know where he went." The girl recalled for a moment, "He was very sad when he left, you should spend more time with him."
"I will." Han Fei was anxious to find Fu Sheng, so he left before the girl’s mother returned.
He ran out of the alley, estimating the time since Fu Sheng had left, "Fu Yi is most likely Fu Yi’s illegitimate daughter, and Fu Sheng might know about it. He might have come here trying to prevent some tragedy."
In Mirror God’s world, he inhabited Mirror God’s body, and he was the protagonist; but in Fu Sheng’s Memory World, Fu Sheng was the protagonist, and he was just the one who might change Fu Sheng’s fate.
The current Han Fei had made choices in reality that Fu Yi had not made, causing some deviations in the Shrine Memory World.
Having completed the Shrine Inheritance Task before, Han Fei was well aware that it was the countless insignificant changes that ultimately reversed fate.
"Fu Sheng wanted to try doing certain things, but obviously he failed. Heartbroken and in pain, he didn’t go to school but went somewhere else instead."
His wife called the police, but since Fu Sheng was already eighteen and had not been missing for more than twelve hours, they did not open a case.
The school had never liked Fu Sheng and they were also reluctant to cooperate in searching for him, passing the buck back and forth.
Luckily, Han Fei never counted on those people from the start. He walked out of the alley, stepping into Fu Sheng’s emotions, considering things from Fu Sheng’s perspective, and step by step, traced back through the street shop’s surveillance videos, ultimately arriving at a little hill behind the school.
It was already dark, and the place was secluded, hardly seeing anyone exercising there. Normally, the school strictly forbade students from going to the hills behind.
"The last time he appeared on surveillance was here. Did he want to be alone for a while?"
Standing in the hills behind, one could overlook the campus and the buildings around, and could also see the students inside the school.
Turning on the flashlight attached to his phone, Han Fei climbed the stairs, not shouting for Fu Sheng but instead sprinting upwards continually.
For some reason, he felt that Fu Sheng should be here.
After running up countless steps, Han Fei reached the highest point of the hills behind, where a viewing platform was under construction.
The railing had just been installed, and beside it on the high platform hung the only light available.
Under the dim light, a student in a school uniform was leaning on the railing, his newly changed school uniform already crumpled, and his backpack filled with textbooks and various papers lay on the ground.
Seeing that the child was not injured, Han Fei’s heart settled back in his stomach. He didn’t shout out loud, instead took out his phone to send a message to his wife, then silently walked up beside Fu Sheng.
He looked into the distance, seeing the view that Fu Sheng had seen.
The city lights below the mountain were brightly lit. Students who should have been eating dinner were moving freely around the campus. Some were running or playing ball on the sports field, some were studying hard in their classrooms, and some couples had purposefully sought out unlit areas to stroll together. It seemed like everyone was engaged in their own activities, each with their own reasons for existing.
Fu Sheng heard footsteps and turned his head to look. When he realized his father had found him, several different emotions flashed through his eyes.
There was disdain for Fu Sheng, an indescribable pain, and a trace of relief.
He now felt conflicted, desiring solitude yet fearing loneliness, hating his father yet also wanting to be found by his family.
"I’m sorry, I skipped class again."
It was a long while before Fu Sheng spoke. He didn’t look at Han Fei; his eyes were fixed on the other students in the campus.
"It’s okay." Han Fei didn’t just offer empty consolation; he genuinely understood Fu Sheng’s pain, more deeply than anyone else in the world.
Hearing his father’s reply brought a unique feeling to Fu Sheng’s heart. His father had been impulsive and selfish in the past, blaming everyone but himself, but now he seemed to have changed.
The evening breeze blew between the father and son, seemingly carrying something away with it and bringing them a bit closer together.
"They all seem happy, always ready to smile." Fu Sheng’s gaze remained on those students. He had no lofty demands; he simply wanted to live a life like everyone else.
"I smile every day. Guess whether I’m happy or not?"
Han Fei rested his hands on the railings, watching the campus with Fu Sheng. He didn’t have children and didn’t know how to be an exemplary father. At times, he even acted like a big boy himself.
Neither father nor son said much more. They just watched the city in the night until Han Fei’s phone rang – his wife was calling him again.
"We should head back, don’t keep the family waiting." Han Fei picked up Fu Sheng’s backpack. "Let’s go, we’ll eat out tonight."
Han Fei was among the best actors of the younger generation, but in this moment, he wasn’t using his acting skills to play the role of a father; he was just being himself.
Because he wanted to leave behind some genuine memories for Fu Sheng in the limited time of life.
This time, Fu Sheng didn’t make any drastic movements. He quietly followed behind Han Fei.
The father and son descended the mountain and met up with a deeply anxious wife.
Unlike the always composed Han Fei, his wife ran straight to Fu Sheng as soon as she saw him. Tears were already falling as she grabbed his arm and checked his body, displaying a kind of worry that could not be feigned. She was like a real mother to Fu Sheng.
"Let’s go; we’ll eat something nice today!" Han Fei looked at his wife and Fu Sheng, leading his family to a very nice restaurant.
"Isn’t this place a bit expensive?" After looking at the menu, his wife nudged Han Fei quietly. "Maybe we should go somewhere else."
"Let’s stick with this one, after all, today is a very special day for me." Han Fei replied with a smile, looking at Fu Yi’s family members.
"Did you get a promotion? Did that game ask you to work again?" His wife was also happy for Han Fei.
"No, today is a day for our family to eat together." Han Fei lifted Fu Tian into his seat and then gazed at Fu Sheng and his wife, his heart beginning to fill with emotion, as he had thought this day would be far off.
Finally, the family was sitting together. This could be said to be the happiest moment for Han Fei since entering the Shrine Memory World.
As delicious dishes were served at the table during a reunion of Han Fei’s family, in a dilapidated hotel, a mother and daughter sat facing each other on a bed.
"You got scared today, didn’t you?" The mother was sewing the girl’s coat that had been scraped.
"Not really." The girl seemed quite cheerful. "Mom, I think I saw Dad today."
At the mention of ’Dad,’ the woman’s warm expression instantly changed. She put down her sewing, her voice cold: "Don’t talk nonsense."
"It’s true! He looked just like he does in the photos!" The girl struggled to reach for a piece of paper with a phone number on it from the table. "He saved me today, and the old man in the bookstore said he is a policeman!"
"A policeman?" Hearing this profession, the woman seemed to understand something: "It seems you really mistook someone else. A selfish and cowardly man like him could never become a policeman in this lifetime."
"If you don’t believe it, you can call this number; it’s the one Dad left behind." The girl handed over the paper to the woman. The woman caressed her daughter’s head affectionately, thinking her daughter mistook the policeman who saved her for her father because she lacked a father’s love.
"You try calling it!"
"Okay, I’ll call right now and also properly thank him." The woman took out her phone. Before she could dial, a call from Doctor Du Shu at the hospital came through.
The phone ringing, the woman stuffed the piece of paper into her coat’s left pocket and rushed out of the house, only daring to answer after she had distanced herself from her daughter: "Doctor Du Shu, is there still hope for my daughter’s condition?"
"There is hope, but it requires a lot of money."
"Can you treat her first? I’ll figure out the money slowly."
"I’m afraid that’s not possible." From the other end of the phone, Doctor Du Shu’s voice emerged: "I heard from your debtors that your husband is a high-ranking executive in a big company. They lent you money because they trusted your word. If you truly love your daughter, why don’t you ask the child’s father for help? Blood is thicker than water; he wouldn’t stand by idly and not help."
"I don’t want to beg him, could you please give me some more time?"
"No one is asking you to beg him. If his daughter is sick, shouldn’t he pay for her treatment? What kind of father behaves like that?" Doctor Du Shu’s voice gradually grew harsher: "I suggest you go to his company tomorrow. In public, he surely won’t be able to deny the debt."
"I’ll think about it."
"Can your considerations change the girl’s condition? The optimal treatment time has already been delayed." Doctor Du Shu sounded impatient: "Our hospital beds are also very limited; I kept one reserved for you out of pity. You’d better come up with the money within three days."
"I will definitely come up with the money, thank you, Doctor Du." The woman wanted to say more, but the call was abruptly ended.
She stood in the run-down corridor of the hotel, and after a long time, she finally pulled out a handful of change and a business card from the right pocket.
The business card bore the name Fu Yi, as well as his company’s address and contact number.
