Chapter 364: Chapter 364: The One Who Came Back is Not Your Dad
Having left the bedroom where the portrait of the deceased was stored, Han Fei still felt some confusion. However, he believed those questions would be answered after he actually met the boy’s parents.
Han Fei remembered that when the system had alerted him, it used "they." From this alone, it seemed that Laisheng’s parents should still be in room 4064.
Upon reaching the living room, Han Fei eyed the room full of mirrors and walked towards the bedroom where the boy’s mother was sleeping.
"Don’t wake up Mom," the boy said, dashing to stand before Han Fei, blocking his path again. Despite his young age, the boy was incredibly stubborn. A seed of obsession might have been planted in his heart from a young age. Without proper care and guidance, that seed of obsession could blossom into something frightening.
"Actually, I am here only to look for something I lost. Rest assured, I have no ill intentions, nor will I wake your mom," Han Fei crouched down, his voice exceptionally gentle. "I’ll just open the door to check. If the person I’m looking for isn’t there, I will leave immediately."
Seeing that the boy was still blocking his way, a trace of sadness slowly emerged through the smile on Han Fei’s face.
His acting was just right, neither hypocritical nor pretentious, perfectly conveying the pain behind his smile to the boy, "You have been waiting for your dad, and I have been waiting for my child; you must understand what missing someone feels like, right? It’s like swallowing a chunk of ice, then warming it up at your chest and finally letting hot tears flow."
Hearing Han Fei’s words, the boy slowly lowered his stretched arms. "Did your child also go to a faraway place?"
Taking a gentle breath, Han Fei’s face still wore that tender smile, but anyone could see the soul behind that smile clenching its teeth.
"Tonight is Soul-returning Night; my child has also returned, but it seems he got lost," Han Fei, an adult man, spoke in a tone conveying a helplessness that moved others deeply.
"You came into my house just to look for your own child?" The boy felt a strong empathy. His father and Han Fei were of similar age. If he were lost, his father would surely search for him with the same desperation as Han Fei.
Mouth tight, the boy thought long and hard and decided not to stop Han Fei. "Then make sure you don’t make any noise to wake up my mom. She prepared a whole year for today’s soul-summoning ceremony. If our actions cause my dad not to come back, she would be very angry and sad."
The boy was very kind-hearted, possessing many qualities rarely seen in the Death Building.
Seemingly unsure about Han Fei’s intention, he snuck into his mother’s bedroom, then carefully grabbed the doorknob, turning it gently.
Han Fei’s heart also lifted, finally facing the true master of 4064. He hoped that the ten points of added friendliness would be of use now.
Laisheng and Han Fei both watched the doorknob intently, but just as the door was about to open, a knocking sound suddenly came from the living room!
The sound startled Han Fei.
The boy quickly let go of the handle, his pale face showing a trace of excitement. He whispered, "Is it my dad coming back?!"
Forgetting to open the door, he pulled Han Fei and hid behind the sofa.
The knocking wasn’t loud. It was mainly because the house was so quiet that it sounded very clear.
"Does your father usually knock on the door like this?" After a few seconds, Han Fei sensed something was wrong. The knocking started with fingertips and gradually turned to palms, with blood seemingly flowing from the palm onto the door, as if a layer of skin had stuck directly onto the door’s surface.
"No, Dad rarely knocks. He usually just says things like open the door, I’m off work, I’m home," the boy replied.
"Then it’s possible that this isn’t your dad. Soul-summoning can attract other things as well."
"Like you?"
"No, I didn’t come here through soul-summoning. I work in this building." Han Fei positioned the boy behind him and slowly approached the door of the living room. "We can’t let it keep knocking like this. It might attract other things."
Han Fei walked to the door, peered through the peephole, and saw a man outside looking down, dressed in red!
"Soul Chaser?" Han Fei had seen many people dressed in red in the Death Building Game, even sharing an elevator with them.
"Let me take a look too." Anticipation was written all over the boy’s face.
Lifting the boy to the peephole, Laisheng looked for a long while, but the anticipation on his face turned to fear: "That’s not my dad!"
"Are you sure? He’s looking down, and you can’t see his face."
"Sure." The boy nodded vigorously.
"Then we shouldn’t open the door for him, let’s hide in the living room instead." As Han Fei was speaking, the knocking suddenly stopped.
"Did that person leave?"
"Let me check again." The knocking had indeed stopped, but there were other faint sounds outside. Han Fei leaned on the door and looked through the peephole again.
The man in red was indeed gone, but clearly visible on the ground were fresh shoe prints amid the ash of paper money, and the bowl of white rice had been disturbed, with either blood or something else dripped into it, creating a red-stained mess.
"Seems like he left." Han Fei breathed a sigh of relief, he was now quite averse to Soul Chasers, those creatures seemed to have lost all humanity, completely dominated by the Death Building.
Turning around, Han Fei was about to take the boy to the living room when he suddenly noticed the boy craning his neck at an exaggerated angle, looking up at the ceiling by the door.
"Above? Soul Ladder!"
Han Fei immediately realized something, and he looked above him, where a bloody man was climbing out of the vent in the door top, sticking to the ceiling like a giant gecko!
His face, fractured and covered with a Death Curse, stared at Han Fei and Laisheng. His mouth opened, and a bloodied tongue reached straight for Laisheng’s neck!
"Quick, back to the bedroom!"
Han Fei pushed the boy away and grabbed the Rebirth Saber, slashing upwards!
The splendid blade cut through the red-clothed man’s tongue effortlessly, the entire event happening in the blink of an eye.
The severed tongue, squirming like an eel, fell to the ground while the red-clothed man’s face, filled with Death Curse, turned slowly to look at Han Fei.
He seemed entirely unprepared for his tongue to be so easily severed by a blade. Moreover, the wound inflicted by the Rebirth Saber couldn’t be healed even by the Death Curse.
Taking advantage of the red-clothed man’s moment of stupefaction, Han Fei immediately rushed into the living room with the boy.
"Go find your mom, tell her the Soul-summoning summoned something else! A ghost has entered your home!"
Filled with anticipation to see his dad first, the boy never got a chance, but instead saw a red-clothed monster.
Ignoring the Soul-summoning Ceremony, he rushed next to the bedroom, but no matter how much he twisted the doorknob, the bedroom door just wouldn’t open.
To buy time for the boy, Han Fei positioned himself between the boy and the red-clothed man. The ferocious Ghost Pattern on his body started emitting Dark Energy, and a massive Nine-life cat materialized behind his back.
