Chapter 363 Rebirth, This Life, Next Life
Chapter 363: Chapter 363 Rebirth, This Life, Next Life
The sketchbook lay open on the ground, the simple crayon drawings reflecting the child’s innocent thoughts and wishes. The boy drew many things related to his family, such as mom and dad cooking together, shopping together, organizing housework, and planting flowers.
The lines were simple, and the drawings not well done, but one could still sense a faint warmth from them.
At least, that was the first impression.
"Is your name Laisheng?" Han Fei picked up the sketchbook from the ground, trying to stay calm and not mind the gaze behind him.
The little boy’s parents had been watching him from behind for who knows how long, and now he was glad he hadn’t spoken out of turn or done anything to harm the boy.
"My nickname is that, but after Dad left, Mom rarely calls me by it." The little boy, wearing wet pants, looked up as if he had already grown up, looking quite adorable.
"Laisheng is your name..." Han Fei held the sketchbook and looked again at the black and white photos in the wardrobe. The photos and the bowls with rice were placed out of the little boy’s reach. Given his height, he could only see his father’s photo, not what was in the bowls.
Something crossed his mind, and Han Fei picked up the photo again. He flipped to the back and unexpectedly found a colorful photo there too; it showed the little boy happily sitting alone on a swing, unknown whether it was the wind blowing or someone pushing, the swing gently swayed.
"It really is so." Han Fei instantly understood why the mother had placed the photo out of the boy’s reach—it wasn’t the father being summoned by the Soul-summoning Ceremony but the boy himself.
The back of the obituary photo held the boy’s colorful picture, and a bowl filled with grains hid a piece of Yellow Paper with Laisheng’s name.
The situation in 4064 was almost the same as in Zhuang Ren’s house in 4144, with the dead summoning the living.
However, because the little boy didn’t have the memory protection that Zhuang Ren had in his Brain Sea, he was successfully summoned to the Death Building.
Perhaps, in the eyes of the little boy’s parents, he was the Ghost returning on the seventh day, but in reality, the living boy was the one being transferred to the Deep World.
His body should still be alive in the real world, but his spirit had been summoned here.
If they did not allow the boy’s spirit to return soon, his own deceased parents would end up killing him.
"Do you remember when was the last time you swung on a swing with your family?" Han Fei replaced the obituary in its original position without revealing the harsh truth to the boy.
"It seems like it was before Father passed away. He and Mom took me to the park. Dad was very strong, pushing me on the swing from behind, making me fly very high. Mom was a bit worried and later even scolded Dad a few times."
The boy thought back carefully, cherishing these memories deep in his heart as his most treasured possessions.
Listening to the boy’s words, Han Fei felt an indescribable sensation. Perhaps, at that time, the boy’s parents were already gone because the colorful photo only showed the boy alone on the swing, his parents nowhere beside him. His only companions were the wind and the birds on the branches.
"Butterfly wanted to summon Zhuang Ren into the Deep World using Zhuang Ren’s family in order to acquire the memories of Fu Sheng stored in Zhuang Ren’s Brain Sea. Then, what was the purpose of summoning Laisheng into the Deep World?"
Butterfly is a madman, but it always has clear objectives and rarely wastes effort on meaningless tasks.
Looking at Laisheng’s name in the album, Han Fei recalled Jin Sheng from Yimin Private Academy and Wang Sheng from Beast Alley, who had turned into the Rebirth Saber.
Laisheng, Jin Sheng, and Wang Sheng’s appearances in the Deep World all related to Butterfly and seemed to correspond to Next Life, this life, and Rebirth, respectively.
Jin Sheng was the strongest, exiled far from Death Building in Yimin Private Academy. Wang Sheng’s family was annihilated; he suffered the most and ended up in Spider’s territory, eventually becoming the saber capable of slaying Butterfly. Laisheng was the weakest, yet he was summoned into Death Building as a hope, most valued by Butterfly.
"Are these three children connected to something of Butterfly’s?" Han Fei couldn’t help but pull out the Rebirth Saber. Wang Sheng had become Han Fei’s saber, Jin Sheng had used his own blood to weave Han Fei’s future, and now he had encountered Laisheng. "Is Laisheng perhaps another backup plan prepared by Butterfly for itself? If it weren’t for my interference, might Butterfly have reborn through Laisheng, taking over Laisheng’s real body? What if I use Rebirth to kill Next Life? Would Butterfly then lose a ’future’ it might have chosen?"
When Han Fei took out the Rebirth Saber, a chilling aura intensified countless times behind him even though he wasn’t harboring any murderous intent; if he had, he probably would have been killed instantly.
At level thirteen, he still seemed a bit weak within the E-level Hidden Map.
"Don’t misunderstand; this is just a hilt, it’s harmless, with no lethal power," Han Fei seemed to be explaining to a young boy, but he was actually telling the two faces in the bedroom that he had no ill intentions.
"This is a hilt?" The boy didn’t recognize what Han Fei was holding. He wanted to say something more when suddenly a rustling sound of blankets came from another bedroom, prompting the boy to quickly cover his mouth.
He looked toward the room where his mother was sleeping. The door, which had been open, had, unbeknownst to him, been closed again.
Seeing that the door was not opened, the boy dared to continue speaking, "Today is Soul-returning Night. Mom says Dad will only come back if we are asleep. If she knows I’m not sleeping properly, she will definitely scold me. She’s really scary when she’s angry; even my dad is afraid of her."
"Then why don’t you listen to her?" Han Fei felt that the boy’s living soul had been summoned into Death Building and he now cared even more for the child.
"My mom may have a bad temper, but I know she loves both me and Dad very much, though she never says it. I want to see Dad early, tell him all this, and then ask him not to rush to such a faraway place," the boy explained.
Han Fei had tried using the gentlest method to explain to the boy what death was so that death would no longer be a cold concept in the child’s mind, but he still hadn’t fully grasped it.
"If your mom knew this is how you feel, she definitely wouldn’t blame you," Han Fei had already decided that, whether it was because of the mission or for other reasons, he would protect this child and send him back before dawn.
"Laisheng, did your mom ever tell you that if summoned souls refuse to leave, they will eventually be trapped in this world forever, unable to find release?" Han Fei’s voice was neither loud nor soft, his words actually directed at Laisheng’s parents.
He could tell the couple loved Laisheng deeply, so he sought the couple’s help to return the child summoned into the Deep World back to his own world.
Han Fei believed Laisheng’s parents would understand him, after all, sometimes separation is also a form of blessing and love.
