Chapter 284: Chapter 284: I’m Just Going to See Your Boss That’s All
After half a day of Han Fei’s lecturing, the young security guard’s fear didn’t dissipate; on the contrary, it intensified.
He could be certain that Han Fei wasn’t a ghost, but that didn’t mean ghosts were the only source of fear in the world.
Looking at Han Fei, who was calm and composed in his blood-stained clothes, the young security guard surreptitiously turned on his walkie-talkie, but perhaps due to being on the fourth subterranean level, the signal was poor. After turning on the walkie-talkie, no one spoke, and all he could hear was a very discordant rustling sound.
"Ghosts are a special kind of magnetic field; where ghosts are present, the magnetic field becomes chaotic..."
Recalling a certain explanation from ghost stories, the security guard’s inner unease rose again.
He rubbed his cramping calves and hurriedly got up from the ground, deciding it was best to leave as quickly as possible.
"Let’s go upstairs. If we don’t, my master will probably start to worry. They should be searching the entire building for me right now," the young security guard said, full of guile. His words were a warning to Han Fei: There are people searching for me in the building; I have many friends, so please don’t do anything rash.
He unilaterally believed that by saying this, Han Fei wouldn’t make any sudden movements, but in reality, upon hearing this, Han Fei just nodded and a thought to sweep all the security guards in the building in one fell swoop crossed his mind.
Upon leaving the room, Han Fei gave another glance at the corridor that was sealed shut with rebar; the other side of the passage seemed like a different world.
"What should I call you?"
"My name is Bai Sinian, everyone calls me Xiaosi."
"Xiaosi, I have a question for you." Han Fei pointed at the sealed-off corridor: "Why did you seal this off? Is there something terrifying inside the corridor?"
"My name is Xiaosi," the young security guard said weakly: "When I used to patrol with my master, he only told me to never come to the fourth subterranean level after midnight. There are no surveillance cameras on this floor, so even if the security doesn’t patrol here, no one would know."
"So you knew this information and used it to your advantage? You specifically went to the fourth subterranean level to rest?" Han Fei couldn’t help but admire Xiaosi for being quite a talent.
"I’m quite brave and I especially love reading horror stories and stuff, so this floor has just the right atmosphere," said Bai Sinian, glancing briefly at the Spiritual Altar in Han Fei’s arms before mysteriously adding, "I’ve heard that before, a new security guard who was extremely afraid of ghost stories came to this Death Building. That person disappeared the first time he was patrolling the fourth subterranean level alone, whether it’s true or not, I don’t know."
Afterward, he threw a doubtful glance at Han Fei, as if worried that Han Fei might be that security guard.
The two walked down the corridor to the elevator lobby, and as Xiaosi watched the numbers fluctuating on the elevator display, the fear in his heart gradually subsided.
Han Fei might be an oddball, but it seemed like he genuinely didn’t have any intention of harming him.
Gathering his courage, Xiaosi asked the question he had wanted to ask all along, "Big brother, you don’t have any obvious wounds, but why is there so much blood on your security uniform? And your security uniform seems to be different from ours."
"I came over from another neighborhood, preparing to join the Security Company and find myself a new job," Han Fei replied casually.
"Then why didn’t you continue working in the previous neighborhood? Did something happen?" Xiaosi instinctively probed further, his eyes filled with a hint of curiosity.
Looking at Bai Sinian like that, Han Fei was somewhat at a loss for words. Life is already short, why do some people insist on taking shortcuts?
If it had been someone with a bad temper, this young security guard would have probably reincarnated several times over by now.
"Ding!"
Just as the atmosphere became a bit awkward, the elevator finally reached the fourth basement floor, and Bai Sinian hurriedly walked in.
Then Han Fei also prepared to step inside. Holding the Spiritual Altar, as soon as his left foot touched the elevator, the overload red light had already lit up.
Han Fei frowned slightly, but Bai Sinian appeared unsurprised, "This elevator has issues. At night, even if there’s only one person in the carriage, it often shows as overloaded. Just wait, it will be fine."
"It seems you’re already used to it."
"No choice but to get used to it. The boss is stingy, always thinking about how to cut unnecessary costs and never bothers to fix these things." As the elevator began to ascend, Bai Sinian’s tone relaxed, "If you’re capable of applying for a job on your own, I’d suggest you’re better off not joining this company. The boss takes a particularly hefty cut. Don’t be fooled by the fancy façade of this place; it’s not much better than those outside agencies. Most crucially, I’ve heard a secret..."
Bai Sinian lowered his voice, "The boss of the Security Company has extensive connections, truly capable of introducing jobs, but some security guards have never returned from their assigned workplaces."
"Doesn’t that mean the job referrals are good? They can work for a long time, very stable."
"Not that kind of returning, I mean completely out of touch, like...they disappeared. Alive, you see no person; dead, you find no corpse." Bai Sinian stared at the security uniform Han Fei was wearing; he looked for quite a while, his expression suddenly turning strange, "I’ve seen that uniform before! Yes, many security guards have worn something similar to your uniform! The community you work in seems to be a major client of our boss, with security guards assigned there every week, but I’ve never seen anyone return. That community is like a bottomless pit."
From Bai Sinian’s words, Han Fei inadvertently gathered a very important piece of information.
This Security Company’s boss actually had connections with the Death Building, continuously sending in trained "security guards."
"Is there any particular requirement for the security guards sent to that community?" Han Fei asked casually.
"Aren’t you working there? Why ask this?" Bai Sinian was puzzled but still honestly answered, "I’m not sure, but I heard that all security guards are sent to the boss’s office on the fourth floor before being dispatched, where the boss gives them something."
Han Fei had already planned to infiltrate the Death Building by posing as a security guard, but there was still some difference between him and the usual Death Building guards; now, he was able to cover up that last distinction as well.
"Let’s go to the fourth floor now." A performance must be complete in every sense, and Han Fei was very strict with acting, forced by circumstances; while a bad performance in reality can be redone, showing any flaw in the Death Building meant everything would be over.
"Are you sure you want to go to the fourth floor? Sometimes the boss sleeps in his office at night; if we bump into him now..." When Bai Sinian mentioned the boss, he shrank his neck, clearly frightened of him.
"No problem, I just want to take a look."
Han Fei was determined to clarify the relationship between the boss of the Security Company and the Death Building. If they were friends, then Han Fei would have to find a way to take care of him.
"I hope things don’t escalate that far; I don’t want more turmoil in my career
