Chapter 285: Chapter 285: Turns Out I’ve Already Died (Three Updates)

The red numbers on the elevator display slowly changed from negative four to negative two. After reaching this level, the elevator stopped without warning.

The silver-gray elevator doors opened slowly, revealing an utterly dark hallway with nothing in it.

"I heard from my mentor that the Security Company used to provide accommodations for employees, allowing them to bring family members to live in the basement dormitories. Later, after something happened, the Boss kicked everyone out and wouldn’t let the unemployed security guards reside in the company anymore." Bai Sinian looked at the hallway outside, pressing his body against the elevator, shrinking into the corner.

"Do you know what actually happened back then?"

"It seems a girl was murdered on the second basement floor when she was returning home at night. If you walk down the hallway, you should still be able to see her memorial tablet and photo."

"I didn’t see any photo or memorial tablet." Han Fei mumbled softly, "I did scare the girl away though."

"What did you say?" Bai Sinian frantically pressed the elevator buttons. After a long time, the elevator doors closed slowly, "Every time the elevator passes the second basement floor, it stops. It’s creepy. Some people have even seen a girl standing outside the elevator, observing the people inside, as if looking for her murderer."

"I didn’t know these things happened in the building." Han Fei felt like he found the right person. With Bai Sinian as his guide, he could save a lot of time.

The two took the elevator to the fourth floor, but this old elevator stopped again when passing the second floor.

Han Fei also found it strange that the elevator seemed to stop at every even-numbered floor.

Compared to the underground floors, the corridors on the surface were clean and tidy, with a lamp every few meters casting a bright light around.

The floor looked utterly normal, just like an ordinary office building, without any visible issues. But in the Deep World, not being able to spot problems was the biggest problem.

A faint burnt plastic smell lingered in the air, making Han Fei’s nose uncomfortable, yet he couldn’t find the source of the smell. It seemed to seep from deep within the walls.

"Has there been a fire here?"

"No." Bai Sinian scratched his forehead and adjusted his security hat.

He stepped out of the elevator, reaching out to take the patrol log hanging next to the elevator.

Names were written in red pen on the shabby log, but most of them had been scribbled out with a pen.

"Who’s playing a prank?" Bai Sinian took a pen from his jacket pocket, preparing to fill out tonight’s patrol report, when he suddenly realized his name wasn’t on it: "That’s weird?"

He flipped through the patrol log repeatedly, the rustling sound echoing in his ears, and Bai Sinian’s expression grew more peculiar.

"Impossible! Someone’s playing a prank! Someone must be playing a prank!" His eyeballs slowly bulged, and his originally normal face seemed to be covered in a layer of gray.

"What’s the matter?" Han Fei saw that Bai Sinian was not in a good state and spoke with a hint of concern.

"Our building’s patrol reports change weekly. When I entered the fourth basement floor tonight, it was Wednesday, yet now all the dates on this report have turned to Thursday! And I can’t find my name on it either!" Bai Sinian’s speech speed increased, and his emotions grew increasingly unstable.

"If it’s just a day’s difference, you should see your name if you look up the old entries, but there’s no record of your name in the entire patrol log, indicating you must have entered the fourth basement a long time ago and never came out." Han Fei’s way of comforting people was pretty direct.

"No way! That’s impossible! I remember very clearly!" Bai Sinian’s skin slowly crumpled as he clutched the patrol log with the fingers of one hand, then dashed toward a room on the second floor: "Master! Are you still there? Wang Shan! Sister Yan Lan! Is anyone there?"

Bai Sinian finally stopped in front of a door, vigorously shaking the doorknob, but he couldn’t open it.

Until Han Fei came over and helped him kick open the door.

Once inside, Bai Sinian frantically rummaged through the cabinets for something, pulling open drawers and making a mess of the documents.

"Why isn’t it here?"

The drawers held the files for all the security guards, except Bai Sinian’s. Feeling unwilling to give up, he turned on the old computer on the desk.

The screen flickered a few times before becoming barely usable. He clicked the mouse frantically, his eyes bloodshot.

None of the file backups had anything to do with him, as if he had been erased from the company.

"Nothing, nothing, still nothing!"

From the desktop, at the last moment of despair, Bai Sinian opened the computer’s recycle bin.

Amid the trash that hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned, he suddenly found a folder from a month ago.

Opening it, it contained backups of surveillance videos.

Holding a try-and-see attitude, Bai Sinian clicked them open, and a video began to play on the computer screen.

At midnight, the elevator rose from the fourth basement floor and eventually stopped at the second floor.

Then the patrol log hanging at the hallway entrance inexplicably fell to the ground. The papers were flipped through, and the names above were brutally scrubbed out.

Faint footprints began appearing in the corridor, and a faint shadow could be vaguely seen walking through, stopping at the office door.

In the empty corridor, the office door lock suddenly began to tremble violently, as if someone was shaking the doorknob manically.

Moments later, the door opened.

After the first video finished playing, Bai Sinian looked at the second video, also shot by surveillance. The camera’s position was right above his head.

In the second video, the late-night office seemed haunted. Drawers were pulled open, the cabinet holding the files was toppled, and various documents were scattered all over the floor.

Once everything returned to calm, the originally dark computer suddenly glowed, opening file after file on the desktop, and the last opened was the recycle bin.

Soon, the computer began playing surveillance video. In the video’s final stage, the screen displayed a face full of blood and scars.

Then a line of words appeared on the computer: "Do you remember?"

Following the perspective of the video, Bai Sinian slowly looked up at the camera overhead. His actions at that moment mirrored those of the ghost in the video.

A strong stench of rot emanated from his body, his bones began to distort and twist, and Bai Sinian’s once handsome face rapidly decayed. Staring at the computer screen’s video, at the ghost in the video, and at his own mirrored face on the screen.

He slowly opened his mouth, his voice bitter, "So I have already died..."

The radio on his shoulder emitted static noises, and from an unknown time, no one responded to him; it seemed he had always been talking to himself.

"I remember now, everyone was taken behind the iron door, only I was trapped and died in the room on the fourth basement floor."

"So I was the most afraid of ghost stories, I was the most timid security guard all along..." He muttered continuously, "No wonder now I am no longer afraid of ghost stories..."

"Are you being morose here?"

Watching Bai Sinian change completely, growing taller continuously, Han Fei opened the Spiritual Altar, releasing Cry and Li Zai, "Being a ghost is fine, a lot of people can’t even become ghosts, and you’re much luckier than them."

Pulling the bewildered Bai Sinian to his side, Han Fei used the power of touching the secrets deep within a soul, forcibly grasping his hand, "If you ever feel lonely, we have a big family here welcoming you."
