Chapter 257: The Awakening Spider
Chapter 257: Chapter 257: The Awakening Spider
In the mortal world, he was inconspicuous, but in the underworld, he was the center of attention. Han Fei watched as those eyes, filled with hatred and the desire to tear him apart, stuttered briefly. It was attention he somewhat couldn’t handle.
Reaching out, he grabbed the half heart enveloped by flesh, symbolizing the Spider’s goodwill. This half-heart did not harm Han Fei; it even became slightly quieter.
"Let’s go!"
Without any hesitation, Han Fei wanted to hurl the heart directly toward the location of the Flesh Spider, hoping to help them get closer, which would fulfill his moral obligation.
Han Fei had a good idea, but what happened next completely dumbfounded him.
The half heart, swathed in flesh, seemed to stick to his palm and wouldn’t come off!
Compared to the horrific, fierce creatures in the building, full of malice, Han Fei’s goodwill, warmth, and humanity shone like a bright lighthouse. The Spider’s heart seemed to feel that this was safer than any other place.
With cold sweat running down his back, Han Fei was terrified out of his wits. Now was not the time for good people to huddle together for warmth. He was already on the verge of breakdown from being chased by the Reader’s Personality; the last thing he needed was to face all the ghosts and monsters present.
Unable to shake off the heart in his hand, Xu Qin’s gaze also seemed off, restless, as if she wanted to lock him in the abyss of the curse.
The Doctor nearby was even more furious, old grudges and new hatreds combined, and now all the waters of the oceans couldn’t wash away the enmity between them.
Unable to shake off the Spider’s heart of goodwill, Han Fei also realized that the heart was covered in cracks and wounds; it couldn’t escape anymore.
Now, Han Fei had only two choices: either chop off his hand immediately or quickly get the heart to the side of the Flesh Spider.
He clenched his teeth, embraced the heart, and immediately changed direction, sprinting toward the location of the Flesh Spider!
As he made this decision, a system prompt sounded in his brain.
"Player number 0000, please take note! You have successfully triggered Level F hidden mission—Destiny Spider!"
"Destiny Spider: Return the heart of the manager of Beast Alley to its atrium, assisting the manager of Beast Alley in retaking control; or consume its heart of goodwill, and become the new manager of Beast Alley yourself! Two different choices, not only determining your fate but also his!"
Han Fei didn’t listen to what the system said. It was like how a sprinter ignores the cheerleading team captain shouting during the final dash of a race.
After all, a cheerleading team captain at least cheers you on, and at worst, they have the advantage of being good-looking, whereas Han Fei’s perception of the system was that it was cold, impersonal, and most of the time just a useless bystander.
Running like mad atop the ruins, Han Fei’s agile movements were on par with a professional parkour athlete. He dared not make any mistakes; falling in this place meant he might never be able to stand up again.
A living person, moving through a world of fierce ghosts and grudges, Han Fei felt like he was constantly pushing the limits of ordinary humans every day.
Reader, Doctor, Xu Qin—these three terrifying entities were chasing him at the same time. What surprised Han Fei was that, just as the Reader’s Personality was about to catch up, a furious Xu Qin started bombarding the other with countless curses.
Even though that woman had lost her sanity, she seemed unwilling to let anyone else kill Han Fei, as if only she had the right to end his life.
The Large-scaled Grudge and the two experts in curses restrained each other, unexpectedly giving Han Fei a slim chance of survival in a desperate situation. He had never run as hard as he did now.
In just a few tens of seconds, Han Fei faced death numerous times. If not for his psychological resilience far beyond the ordinary, he might have already been scared to death.
Han Fei’s goal was the Flesh Spider, but the three terrifying shadows following him all saw through his intentions, giving him no chance to get close.
He couldn’t deliver the heart to the Spider, and the curse Han Fei was suffering was triggered; his Reader Personality continuously sketched parts of Han Fei’s body on that coverless book.
His limbs felt as though countless insects gnawed at them, and Han Fei watched his own skin crack open, his blood vessels twisted and contorted as if controlled.
Fortunately, he had successfully transformed into the Midnight Butcher, endowed with Flesh-type Curse Resistance. Otherwise, he would likely have already lost the ability to resist and would have been cursed to death.
"What should I do?"
The situation had reached its worst state. Han Fei wanted to get close to the Flesh Spider, but hindered by the Doctor, the distance between them grew further and further.
"I can’t keep staying in the Butcher’s house!"
Any mistake could be fatal now, and a few seconds of hesitation would only make his situation even more dangerous. Han Fei’s brain worked rapidly; he devised his next plan while nearly sprinting.
Catching on to the crumbling walls, Han Fei directly climbed up to the second floor.
Dodging the Doctor’s sharp steps and dragging his bleeding body, Han Fei’s eyes remained fixed on the Spider.
At this moment, he seemed utterly desperate, as though he could only climb higher.
He darted about frantically, not daring to look back, as though he had given up on returning the heart to the Spider and thought only of escaping for his life.
As the walls of the Butcher’s house massively collapsed, Han Fei had climbed to the third floor by then, but this actually increased the distance between him and the Spider.
His body, slowed down by the curse, and surrounded by the Doctor and the Reader Personality, made an unexpected move when a grotesquely twisted flesh-and-blood foot crushed towards his head.
With all muscles tensed, Han Fei charged towards the collapsing middle of the Butcher’s house!
He was like the Spider, which had once fallen from the fourth floor, plunging from reality into the world of consciousness without any hesitation, jumping directly from the third-floor collapse to the torrent of flesh below!
Different people, yet possessing the same experiences.
Han Fei too had once stood in the Writer’s room, having felt the other’s decisive leap filled with sorrow and despair.
At that moment, he was like that person in the past.
Clinging to the remaining half of his heart, Han Fei leaped toward the Spider unhesitatingly, not knowing whether beneath him lay the Abyss or hope. He was merely doing what he believed was right.
With the wind carrying the scent of blood whistling in his ears, the wounds on Han Fei’s skin split open, trailing blood in the air.
He barely opened his eyes, with the dark pupils reflecting the flesh-composed Spider.
"The one who destroyed half your heart is me, and the one who brings the other half is also me. I’ve shattered the malice and pain for you, and I bring you goodwill and hope."
Han Fei’s body plummeted into the torrent of flesh; the half heart in his hand was instantly enveloped by blood, drawn towards the Spider at the center of the flesh.
As that half of a heart embedded into the Spider’s chest, the entire Butcher’s house thunderously collapsed. The Spider, which had retained only basic consciousness, slowly opened its blood-flesh-constituted eyes, its murky eyes looking toward Han Fei through the torrent of flesh, fixating on him in the end.
