Chapter 90 - 90 88 Choosing Fresh Produce
Chapter 90: Chapter 88: Choosing Fresh Produce Chapter 90: Chapter 88: Choosing Fresh Produce They moved out of the surveillance camera’s range, and Lu Jingyan was uncertain about what followed.
Sheng Xian had said she would be back soon, but half an hour had passed, and she hadn’t come home.
She had been planning to wait for Sheng Xian to return, so they could eat together, but now she had lost her appetite and doubt was starting to creep into her mind.
The woman had arrived with bluster, clearly there to cause trouble.
Sheng Xian’s neighborhood had excellent privacy. Aside from the shared underground parking garage, residents could only use the elevator to access their own floor.
After the two of them entered the elevator and didn’t come home, it was obvious they had gone to the underground garage.
Should she go and check?
After grappling with indecision, Lu Jingyan finally went back to her room to change clothes and, taking her phone, she went downstairs.
The underground parking garage was quiet and deserted, without a single person or sound.
Lu Jingyan peered around and after looking all over, she spotted Sheng Xian in the far corner of the garage.
He was alone.
The woman who had barged in was nowhere to be seen.
He leaned against the wall, head slightly bowed, lost in thought.
Even from a considerable distance, she couldn’t make out his expression, but she could feel the atmosphere emanating from him. It was not his usual indifference and detachment, but rather despair and dejection.
In Lu Jingyan’s memory, Sheng Xian was someone who could hide his emotions perfectly—cold indeed, but his most direct trait was being laconic.
This was the first time Lu Jingyan had seen Sheng Xian like this.
His whole aura felt oppressive, he looked extremely impatient, and even carried a sense of world-weariness.
Lu Jingyan hesitated to approach him for a moment.
She stood still for about ten seconds, then took out her phone and sent Sheng Xian a message.
Lu Jingyan, “Where are you?”
It took a while for Sheng Xian to fish his phone out of his pocket.
He seemed to freeze at the question, and after a long pause, he tapped at the keyboard.
Lu Jingyan’s phone buzzed twice in her hand.
Sheng Xian, “At the supermarket.”
Sheng Xian, “Buying some fruit.”
Lu Jingyan didn’t expose Sheng Xian’s lie but pressed on her phone, “The supermarket nearby?”
Sheng Xian, “Yeah.”
Lu Jingyan, “Then I’ll come find you, I wanted to go out for a walk anyway.”
Sheng Xian didn’t stop her, “Call me when you get here.”
Lu Jingyan, “Okay.”
Sheng Xian stopped replying to her messages, put his phone back in his pocket, and stood still without moving.
In fact, he knew the purpose of Mrs. Chen’s visit as soon as he saw her, he just didn’t expect her to be so forthright.
“Sheng Xian, why are you always worrying about things?”
“He’s your little brother, is that how you act as an older brother?”
“I’m telling you, if nothing happens to Xiuxiu that’s fine, but if something goes wrong, I will never forgive you, Sheng Xian. You and your father are both so annoying. I should have never had you. I shouldn’t have listened to your grandfather. I should have gone to the hospital and aborted you.”
It had been a long time since he had seen Mrs. Chen, so long that he himself couldn’t quite remember whether it had been three or four years.
During this time, Mrs. Chen would occasionally remember she had a son like him and send him a message suggesting they have a meal together some time.
Then that “some time” never actually got scheduled.
The reason he went to the club that day was actually to find out how Mrs. Chen had been doing over the years.
He thought that Mrs. Chen, upon seeing him, would at least ask how he was before making accusations.
Sheng Xian felt as if an invisible hand was gripping his throat, making it difficult to breathe.
His phone vibrated once more in his pocket, and upon checking, it was a message from Lu Jingyan, “I’m headed out.”
Sheng Xian replied with a hmm, straightened up, and headed towards where the car was parked.
Only after Sheng Xian’s car had driven away did Lu Jingyan return to the first floor.
She chose to walk to the supermarket to give Sheng Xian plenty of time to prepare.
In the middle of the day, there weren’t many people in the supermarket.
Lu Jingyan hadn’t gone far inside when she caught sight of Sheng Xian.
The tall man with long legs was pushing a cart, standing in the produce section picking out apples.
Choosing fresh produce…
Lu Jingyan held back the urge to call out to Sheng Xian, opting instead to stand quietly behind him and enjoy the view.
Professor Sheng, having shed the negative emotions from earlier, looked surprisingly good standing amidst the colorful array of fruits and vegetables.
It felt particularly homey and full of life.
It gave off an inexplicably warm feeling.
This was the first time she had ever watched someone shop at a supermarket with so much patience.
And she even found it quite exhilarating.
Lu Jingyan kept a distance as she followed Sheng Xian.
As Sheng Xian passed the snack aisle, a little child tugged at his pants leg, “Uncle.”
Sheng Xian stopped and looked down at his leg.
A chubby little girl, looking up, pointed at a row of chocolate, “Uncle, I want that one.”
Sheng Xian followed her gaze, “This one?”
The little girl nodded her head.
Sheng Xian picked out a box of chocolates and handed it to the little girl.
The little girl held the chocolate close to her chest, smiled brightly at Sheng Xian, and even held up two chubby fingers to form a somewhat awkward heart, “Thank you, Uncle.”
Sheng Xian bent over and gently touched the little girl’s head, “Go find your mom.”
The little girl responded with a couple of hums, clutching the chocolate that was twice the size of her face, and ran ahead.
Sheng Xian watched as the little girl ran to her mother, and was about to push his cart forward when he felt a very light pull on his clothes.
This time it wasn’t his pant leg, but the pocket of his trench coat.
Sheng Xian looked down and saw his open trench coat pocket.
A slender, white finger was hooked inside his pocket, pulling gently.
That finger looked very familiar.
He paused for two seconds, followed the slender wrist up and set his eyes on Lu Jingyan’s face.
“Brother,” Lu Jingyan imitated the little girl from before, pointing her finger at the shelf of milk candies, “I want that one.”
Sheng Xian glanced at where she was pointing.
It was right next to her hand, her fingertips nearly brushing against the bag of milk candies.
Sheng Xian looked back, “Get it yourself.”
“You get it for me,” Lu Jingyan said, hooking Sheng Xian’s trench coat pocket and gently shaking it twice, “I can’t reach.”
Sheng Xian looked at her, speechless, he could reach the top of the shelf just by lifting his arm, “Then don’t get it.”
Lu Jingyan’s eyes widened incredulously, she stared at Sheng Xian for two seconds, then kicked at the cart he was pushing, “You got it for that little girl, why can’t you get it for me?”
“You know, that was a little girl,” Sheng Xian caught the cart that she almost kicked away and looked like he was ready to leave.
“Who wasn’t a little girl?” Lu Jingyan refused to let go of Sheng Xian’s clothes so he couldn’t walk away, “I am also a little girl, don’t believe me… Look…”
Saying this, Lu Jingyan crouched on the ground, looked up at Sheng Xian with fluttering eyelashes, “I’m only three years old.”
“I still am a baby, baby…”
Sheng Xian, with his eyelids drooping, looked at the little schoolgirl playing coy for two seconds, and he couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
