Chapter 57: Heart of Jelly

They had started at the wrong foot. What should she say to ease the misunderstanding?

But before she could rake her mind with an idea, Li YingYi had held her by the wrist and dragged her away. AiLin watched the young man as he tried to drag her away but couldn’t move a single inch as AiLin remained on her seat with her legs crossed. She watched him before tilting her head in confusion. He was even more confused as a man like him who had trained a little in boxing couldn’t make AiLin budge a single inch. He found himself dragging her even further with more power only to exhaust himself after a long five minutes of ardent tries.

"It’s rude to pull a woman by their hand when they haven’t given a consent," AiLin spoke with a bleaker tone. She stared at him and hummed, "How do you... fare?"

But Li YingYi who never failed in his life had his face turned redder than a beetroot. He screamed in his head in humiliation before snapping his eyes at AiLin with a hint of tears in it.

AiLin was even more shocked seeing that tears were turning Li YingYi’s eyes glassy.

"Can you not cry?!" AiLin argued with her lips tensed. "Stop crying with Li ZiChen’s face! It’s so.. weird!"

"Why is nothing going my way?" Li YingYi instead asked her. He sat down on the floor and pulled his knees to his chest, sobbing. Sobbing!

AiLin felt a sudden urge of slapping her own face. She heard murmurs beginning to gather and was sure that after the commotion she made two hours ago, she would be kicked out for certain this time! This time, she carried her shopping bags on her left shoulder and dragged the still sorrowful and whimpering Li YingYi away from many questioning eyes.

They stopped at a private cafe that was too girly for a man to enter. But that was the only emptiest place so AiLin couldn’t spare him from more embarrassment. No.. why should she consider it when he had failed to do what he wanted, embarrass himself, and further smeared his name by crying?

She saw how Li YingYi who refuse to put his head upward and continued to lay on the table face first.

The saying of a spoiled youngest child seemed to be so true...

AiLin rubbed her eyebrows that seemed to itch for a frown, "Hey," she whispered. "Stop crying okay? I don’t know what to do when someone cry. You’re an adult man, and you’re still crying?"

"Is it wrong for someone to cry?!" Li YingYi spat out instead. "I wasn’t going to cry! But my day is ruined because of you! And now I only embarrass myself further because of you too! Why didn’t you budge? Are you holding some bricks inside your clothes?"

AiLin winced at his accusation and only sighed, "No, no, you can cry, go cry until you’re exhausted." She placed her hand to her face, sighing deeper. Oh Li ZiChen.. did you absorb all the good quality and left your brother as a crybaby? No wonder Li ZiChen was so soft to Li YingYi, it turns out the younger brother has a heart softer than a jelly.

Though she usually hate rude people, she could only see Li YingYi as a baby and a younger man. He must be Vicky’s age as well and it was then that she realized that she had quite a very soft spot for all the kids younger than her. Especially kids who just become an adult. Maybe it was because back then she didn’t have anyone else to rely on as a new adult.

She thought on what to say, "Are you crying because Li ZiChen punched you this morning?"

Snapping his eyes upward, his cheeks were free from tears streak but there was reddening on the rim of his eyes. He was crying from embarrassment and was even more embarrassed to seeing AiLin eye to eye but he gathered his courage to the point AiLin almost encourage him.

"My brother never hits me, you know."

"Yes, he told me," she said only to see Li YingYi more offended that she had talked to his brother. "Your point?" She asked with a more calmer tone.

"He was... always so obsessed with a figure of someone," spoke Li YingYi as he covered his mouth and neck with both elbows on the table, "I think he’s searching of her inside you. I don’t want him to be haunted by a ghost of that person anymore so I wish you could leave him and stop pretending to be AiLin."

There seemed to be a misunderstanding but AiLin’s mind was caught more in the "figure" that Li YingYi mentioned.

"This figure you mean, is it Jiang AiLin? Li ZiChen has been looking for Jiang AiLin?" She asked carefully. For the first time she felt as if she was going closer to understanding Li ZiChen.

This mysterious man who seemed so intrested in her. Something in her heart tells her that it wasn’t only curiosity or for the sake of his plan to get back at her grandmother which rouse him into forming this contract and contact her. It was something else, but she couldn’t figure it out.

Perhaps they have known each other before?

"No," said Li YingYi which completely exhausted all her hope. The younger brother said to her, "It’s someone that looked like Jiang AiLin. You also have a face like that Jiang AiLin. I would understand two people having similar faces but three? This isn’t funny! The fate above us is playing a trick on my brother."

A gnawing question bite the back of AiLin’s head. The more she asked, the more mysterious Li ZiChen is. She inquired again, "Wait, wait, why does Li ZiChen so desperate in finding this woman?"

"Don’t you see the tattoo on his ring finger?"

AiLin frowned and combed through her memories. She found herself remembering the intricate tattoo of a snake head on his ring finger and that snake body slithered around until his wrist. It was an impressive tattoo that no one would ever forgot. But it didn’t seem anything more impressive other than its art.

"That woman helped him," said Li YingYi, making him to take a double take of his face.

"What do you mean by help? She tattooed that snake on him?" AiLin couldn’t find any reason for Li ZiChen to be so obsessed in finding someone who looked like her simply because of his tattoo.

"She only drew it," he retorted, "I don’t know the details either but all I knew is that one day he came home with his hands bloody and he got stitches to hide the wound on his hand. He didn’t feel it was enough and thus tattooed it to hide the scar. All I know is that woman was the cause for the scar and for him to be so haunted by her for years... but you— you are not Jiang AiLin right? You aren’t the woman who caused that scar on him. So please do me a favor and help snap my brother out of it. Stay away from him for his own good! You understand this right? If it is money you need, I can pay you a lot!"
