Chapter 51: Battling Demons
The Li Corporation has always been known for their impeccable image and management. All the hired workers down to their janitors and gardeners are best of the best, consisting of people who are most well known in their respective field. All this couldn’t have happened if their leader wasn’t the charming Li ZiChen. The people who admire him found themselves attracted to enter the company but despite that, those in the secretarial management are still in a difficult position as they couldn’t find an answer that would solve their curious question of their Boss’s sudden odd behavior.
This behavior had started early in the meeting that was set in the afternoon. Li ZiChen was a bit out of focus, something that wasn’t too difficult to understand when they saw him drink the whole coffee cup despite one of the new secretary adding a spoon of salt instead of sugar. He didn’t seem to mind the salty taste, either he actually found a liking to it or that he was too focused with the things in his mind than the situation in front of him.
Thus Secretary Wao, the head of all the secretarial, was even more puzzled when Li ZiChen frowned upon seeing the CV of the new employee who had passed the first and second interviews.
"Familiar name," commented Li ZiChen while reading ’Bai HaiZe’ document. His picture was a face of a young sweet man who was the same age of himself. A glasses with silver frame hung low on his nose that slightly hide a definite mole under his eyes. "Bai HaiZe."
"That young man is the best candidate so far," said Secretary Wao who also had an eyeglass in front of his eyes. "He was said to have just came back from his work abroad in the Philippines. They also said that he could master around four languages."
"I could speak six," Li ZiChen retorted with a frown before he pursed his lips. Even when he was young, he didn’t like to argue with Li YingYi or any of his sweet siblings. He would usually gave up the moment his siblings tried to show off their achievements, partly because his siblings never won a single achievement over him, all except ballet.
Confused, Secretary Wao nodded, "Yes! Everyone who had read your profile in the business magazine would for certain heard about it," the secretary said proudly as if it was his own achievement. "Do you not find him likable?"
Li ZiChen tossed the paper down the desk, not responding to the question for a while until he seemed to have made up his mind, "No, accept him. It’s better to keep an enemy close than far."
Enemy? The secretary asked in his head but eventually stopped his own questions.
"Secretary Wao is there any of the best therapist around Beijing? One that could always fix any problem?" Li ZiChen asked before he crossed his arms. He stared at the secretary intensely which made the man in front of him to wrung his hands together.
Li ZiChen wasn’t stupid. He knew all therapist couldn’t just magically whisper a magic spell and have their patient’s worries gone with a "poof". But if there was the best therapist in the field, he needed to look into it.
"I suppose..." Secretary Wao muttered to himself before he suddenly scatter forward and floored himself in front of Li ZiChen’s desk, "OH NO! BOSS ARE YOU ALRIGHT? It’s a mental awareness month! We all understand if you would ever need a break once in a while for your own mental sake."
Li ZiChen narrowed his eyes and judged the way his secretary began on wailing. Although Secretary Wao has always been impeccable from making schedules, to excuses, and a great spy to him sometimes this man had too much energy than what Li ZiChen would like to see from his secretary.
Seeing Li ZiChen’s disgusted gaze, Secretary Wao straightened his suit and cleared his throat, "Right, right. I mean there is a therapist that I have heard to be well known. She took care for almost every businessmen who are struggling with battling their inner demons."
"Not for me," Li ZiChen replied to make sure that Secretary Wao wouldn’t suddenly bring out diaries or journals for him to write and bug him how talking one to one from heart to heart will somehow fix her mental illness. This Secretary is always known for doing too much at times and he wasn’t going to deal with this foolishness. "Whatever, tell me that therapist’s name."
"About that, you wouldn’t like to hear it..." said Secretary Wao carefully.
When he frowned, his secretary tried to find the best words on his tongue as he responded, "It’s Miss Mei Hua’s mother."
"Damn it," Li ZiChen already cursed out loud. As he had never been too concerned about each of his brother’s parent’s job, he didn’t bother remembering what kind of field Mei Hua’s mother work in. Though he didn’t recall ever being introduced to Mrs Mei either, he knew for certain Mei Hua was going to use this chance to pull another trick.
Just thinking about it made him press his forehead as he wasn’t going to deal with another woman begging to sleep or carry his baby. He wasn’t going to deal with the mess or have any misunderstanding created since AiLin is quite special in making up her own imagination.
But this was a pressing matter too.
He had seen how AiLin had acted the past few days. Though she didn’t say it out loud, she seemed to be battling with something inside that pretty little head of hers. He could always hear the gears on her head turning and how sometimes her eyes shifted from bright and lively into one that was simply filled with darkness. When he recalled how bleak her eyes were as she walked down the bridge last night, he was convinced that there was a wound deeper in her heart and mind than the ones that shows on her skin.
"How good is Mrs Mei as a therapist?" Li ZiChen brought his elbow to the desk and clasped his fingers into a praying stance, "Can you say for certain that she is the best of best?"
"I’m certain," Secretary Wao said.
"Then book me an appointment with her," Li ZiChen settled at once. He dislike handling MeiHua but this was for AiLin’s sake and so he wasn’t going to simply brush a great chance of finding the perfect therapist for her sake as well. The better a medicine is, the best it would work to heal the patient. He would never bring AiLin anything that’s second best.
"Of course!" Secretary Wao said happily, "Anything else you’d like to add, Boss?"
"No, leave me alone for now," Li ZiChen demanded as he saw Secretary Wao hop off his office like lightning as if he was battling race with the demons. He then reached out his hand to touch his phone, his finger tap on the message icon of AiLin while he watched how she was online yet not even a single message had been sent to him. Though something unsettling brew in his heart, he didn’t want to be greedy and thus closed his phone as soon as he opened it.
If AiLin wasn’t going to message him, there was no reason for him to continue staring or even having the phone to begin with.
He sighed, pressing his head on the headrest of his chair while he wondered if he should start something chaotic to fulfill his boredom.
