Chapter 49: Working Ant
Chapter 49: Working Ant
In the afternoon, AiLin had left to find Canary in her office. She had arrived too early and was greeted by the large bald quintuplet who appeared to be the happiest upon seeing AiLin’s arrival. They began to offer her cookies and cakes, even brewing a cup of coffee that tasted almost perfect while they sat around, staring at her unblinkingly with sparkles on their eyes.
Feeling the intense gaze, AiLin surrendered, "Is there anything you guys are curious about?"
"Yes!" The leader of these boys was Suan Yi. The man was also the one who had brewed the coffee for her. "We are very curious about our boss. You see, madam, Boss had never talked to us anything about her past. Most of us don’t want to push her into speaking about things that she didn’t like but we are very curious."
Thinking about Canary her best friend, AiLin sighed. True. Canary’s life was even worse than her. They get along because of the similar wounds that they carry on their souls but Canary also dislike talking about her past. Though they knew bits and pieces about each other, they never really had a full on conversation about their life before prison as they knew it would dig through their fresh wounds. Both friends didn’t want to remind the other of their wounds and decided that comfort was to stay by the other’s side in silence.
But there were a lot of things that AiLin knew about Canary.
"How is Canary the past few years?" AiLin responded with another question but the guys didn’t felt offended. Sitting on the floor like girls on a sleepover night, they spoke with murmur to one another.
"Miss Canary has always been a closed person."
"She began to laugh more because how we all turn bald at the same time and look similar to the point that no one could differentiate us."
"True, back then she was so much quieter. She found us after we were abandoned."
AiLin raised her eyebrows, "Abandoned?" Such large men, abandoned?
"Our boss ran away to leave us to die. He was a gang member who stole drugs without telling us. Eventually we were forced to take the blame but Miss Canary found us and helped us through it. She paid the drugs that were stolen and told us to pay that loan we need to work under her," answered Suan Yi which filled the gap of questions that had landed in AiLin’s head.
She hummed, so turns out they were here working for Canary to pay their debts.
"Though we have paid all of it long ago," said Suan Er, the second eldest.
Impressed, AiLin smiled, "You guys decided to stay here even after paying your debts?"
"We did pay our money debt but we haven’t yet been able to pay the kindness that Miss Canary showed us. She is our boss no matter what," said Suan Yi who began to rub his nose with a proud humph.
Seeing this, AiLin began to soften the corners of her lips, sincerely she expressed, "I’m glad to hear that." Canary needed this. She needed ally who will always be on her side no matter what. The Suan brothers are indeed the right choice and it touched AiLin’s heart to find out that they were the type of people that she had always prayed Canary would surround herself with. "Thank you for being by her side."
The Suan brothers looked at her with eyes full of admiration. They all began to hid their faces and responded one after another.
"It ain’t something for ya to thank for."
"Yea, it’s not like we did it for you."
"We just like the Boss, it’s not for you to thank."
AiLin laughed when suddenly she heard a knock as Canary entered her office only to raise her left eyebrow high enough for it to almost reach the roof. She stared at her men who were surrounding AiLin in a circle and immediately shoo them off, "Go away, shoo shoo, what are you doing surrounding her? Did they try to do anything funny to you, AiLin?"
"Boss! How could you! We would never harm your precious friend!"
"Yeah bestie forever, we know what that means okay?!"
"Shoo Shoo! I told you guys to shoo, aren’t y’all going now?!" Canary pick up a nearby duster to hit their bald heads but they were quicker than her and scattered out of the office with grumbles bubbling on their mouth.
"Petty!"
"Evil boss!"
"I can hear you!" Canary locked the door behind them and sighed. She plopped down on the seat beside AiLin and leaned her head almost immediately to her shoulders. She huffed, "Those noisy guys."
"You’re so wet," AiLin said with a frown, "It’s raining and you didn’t bring your umberella? That’s rare for you."
"No, I did have an umbrella but I gave it to Lu Ping. I was following her today out of curiosity and you know what?" Canary placed her mouth right before her hand before bursting into laughter, "You were so correct with your assumption, AiLin! Jiang NianNian kicked Lu Ping out of the car, yelled at her, and even refused to give a single dollar for Lu Ping to borrow. I eventually had to sit down and hear all the disgusting monologue from Lu Ping about how she has always been living being the second option for her family and eventually found joy only in gambling and shopping which molded her into the person she is."
"Hum," AiLin sang, disinterested in the plea made by Lu Ping, her head immediately recall the time when she was younger. "Back in high school, she was quite the queen bee. Men like Lu Ping a lot you know."
"Really?"
"She was happy to give whatever the men around her like, and those men see her as an easy prey. That’s why whatever she asked them to do... those men would do whatever she demanded," AiLin’s eyes had began to turn dark as she stared outside the window. It made her recall the past where there would not only be girls who would bully her but boys.
And what is more scary than young teenage boys who still couldn’t hide their lusts?
All their bulliyings were horribly disgusting like a filthy pig. Not to mention the time when she was locked in the gym locker room.
"AiLin!"
Canary’s voice entered her ears and she found herself staring back at Canary. She smiled and patted her friend’s head, "Don’t worry. I’m alright. Did she say anything about her next plan to pay the loan?"
Showing a grin to her, Canary chuckled, "Yes. She told me that there is no use to hesitate anymore. So she said that since NianNian have abandoned her first, she will now abandon NianNian as well. What a great friendship they have, right?"
"It was never a friendship," AiLin replied with a smile. She had thought this ever since Lu Ping stepped on her head in the bathroom of their high school. She could see how Lu Ping’s dynamic with Jiang NianNian had always been mismatched. There was a hierarchy amongst NianNian’s friends and Lu Ping is the last one in that rank. In short, to Jiang NianNian’s eyes Lu Ping isn’t a friend. She was merely someone easy to demand, a working ant for her.
