Chapter 277: Don’t Be Afraid

People’s judgement would always clouded when they found themselves cornered. In desperation, they would do things to measure and control their failure and that was what Jiang NianNian had been feeling the past few weeks as the day of her competition marched closer to her.

She didn’t trust Li GuangSha fully but the days she had been keeping a tab on the girl, she found out that Li GuangSha’s past was never fabricated, meaning she is who she is and she wasn’t someone sent or a part of AiLin’s plan to ruin her life.

She carefully took the navy color pencil from Li GuangSha and began to drew a sketch on the paper, slowly with one line over another then a curve and a shade. She changed her color pencil, taking another color and drew her design, placing it on the table once she’s done with her first one.

Seeing it, Li GuangSha let out a hum, "I don’t think this is enough. It has no difference than your old pieces, as if you are trying to recreate what you already made not to make something new. The judges wouldn’t want to see something over and over again, it’s different from having a style, this is copying your old self."

Jiang NianNian frowned, snapping her glare at Li GuangSha instead, "So what should I do?!"

"Draw what you want, what you really want, Miss Jiang. Don’t look at what you used to draw but make what you have always wanted to show to the world."

"No," Jiang NianNian refused, gritting her teeth, "My old designs won’t work anymore."

"Because it’s not enough?" Li GuangSha inquired as she smiled softly, placing her hand on Jiang NianNian’s shoulders as she whispered, "That’s why I’m here aren’t I? I will make it so no one would be able to say that something is lacking from your design."

"But how?"

"Just trust me," Li GuangSha said, "And I trust your design. We have to work base on trust Miss Jiang and only then can you and I create something that’s set apart from everyone else."

Pursing her lips, Jiang NianNian stared at the blank paper apprehensively. She didn’t know what she should do or whether she could really bring herself to trust Li GuangSha but if this was the only choice should she really hesitate?

Li GuangSha isn’t a spy sent for her, she’s someone hired, someone who lacks money and needed it from her. Unlike the rest, Li Guangsha needed her as much as she needed the help that Li GuangSha could offer. She was hired for her competition so why should she ever hesitate?

Jiang NianNian eventually bite down her lips, doing what she had feared to do which was to go back to her old designs and drew what used to be overlooked by others in the designing world. Her gowns and dress was often told to lack elegance, always told too brash and too harsh. It was a dress that people pointed to look good on her but bad to others as she had always and only made gown that would fit her.

She never thought it was bad, her old designs had its fan and its hater, it was never clear cut and that was supposed to satisfy her but Jiang NianNian could never bring herself to ever feel very satisfied with simply being liked or hated.

She wanted to stand out.

She wanted her designs to reach the first rank. So others would speak about it fondly, so it would be so famous that everyone would do anything just to have a piece of her gown.

In the end she drew what she wanted, the old design, the one that so many critics had looked down upon. Seeing it made her upset, causing for her lips to purse tight in displeasure.

Li GuangSha noticed the tension tightening across Jiang NianNian’s jaw, the way her fingers clenched around the colored pencils even after she had finished the final stroke. Clearly she was still unhappy with what she had design, seeing it lacking, seeing it as ugly.

It’s normal for any designer to feel this way. Everyone who had dipped their hands in creating an art piece would never feel satisfied with what they make, knowing what was lacking and what could have been done better.

At the same time, they didn’t want to change and didn’t know what to improve in their designs. Even after they have made what they want and fulfilled to make themselves satisfied with their art, it would usually be for a short lived moment as they began to scrutinize their arts again, realizing what was odd and what was lacking.

So Li GuangSha didn’t say anything and waited in silence, letting Jiang NianNian to stew in her discomfort, her doubts, and her fury at herself.

"Do you hate it?" Li GuangSha asked to the pampered young lady. "Do you think that it’s not enough yet to impress yourself yet?"

Jiang NianNian didn’t answer right away. Her eyes scanned over the drawing she had just finished. The lines were bold, the curves dramatic, while the silhouette tailored perfectly for a specific body, for her body. It wasn’t delicate. It wasn’t "ethereal." It wasn’t also memorable or an art set apart from other arts. It didn’t have the kind of elegance high society liked to pretend was "meaningful".

It was loud and rebellious. It demanded attention, just like Jiang NianNian’s own personality that wanted to stand out. The dress spoke as if it was to be worn by someone who didn’t want to be whispered about, but talked about.

She muttered under her breath, "They’re not going to like this. What they want is an art that suits how I look, sweet and charming, not this rebellious and unable to be used by someone else."

Li GuangSha leaned closer, smiling with a chuckle, "And? Conforming to their wishes won’t do you well Miss Jiang. You’re just going to remain the same as others and though it is lacking I know what to do to improve it so no one can say anything against your designs anymore."

Jiang NianNian finally looked up.

"You said you wanted to stand out, didn’t you?" GuangSha continued her words. "The pieces you created have to look different from anyone else, it has to speak for itself, to yell loudly that it’s something that no one else could achieve to create but you." She scratched the sketch with her nail. "This is you. Not the polished, little Miss Jiang, but a rebellious and creative Miss Jiang. Make another four of this."

"Four?" Jiang NianNian frowned, "I only need one piece."

"That’s not enough. We have to make different designs and choose the best of its best. We don’t get to play safe miss Jiang. We have to make sure that this is a masterpiece."

Jiang NianNian pursed her lips, "There’s not a lot of days left for the competition."

"Then work faster," Li GuangSha demanded, placing the design on the table. "I will also work even faster to support you. We both can create the dress together even without my name in it, I’m here to help you aren’t I?"

"But what about you?" Jiang NianNian asked, "You aren’t going to participate in the competition too?"

One might even mistaken this words of Jiang NianNian to come from a sense of concern to an old friend but Li GuangSha knew well that Jiang NianNian had asked whether she would want to participate to the competition because she feared that she would be competing against Crimson and instead lose.

"No," Li GuangSha answered with a smile, "I did design something but it’s not for the competition anymore and I could give you it but as we know many eyes are on you, wondering if you’re going to copy another design so we can’t have that as a risk."

"Are you sure?" Jiang NianNian frowned at her and she nodded.

"I won’t participate, I don’t have the money to do so either way. So let’s focus on your designs that takes the priority."

Jiang NianNian was nervous but unlike her, Li Guangsha was confident. That confidence was odd but she couldn’t lie about how it easily bought her.

The following four days since then, Jiang NianNian had managed four more designs that Li GuangSha had demanded. Many errors and rejections came from Li GuangSha until the fourth day where she managed to say a yes to the design.

Unlike her, Li Guangsha was truly a crafted person when it comes to her art. After the four designs were created, Li GuangSha modified her gown into something that she couldn’t believe she had made.

It was the real "art" something she couldn’t have achieved alone.

Seeing it before her eyes, jealousy appeared in her heart but apart from that was excitement as she had finally managed to break from the mold and she didn’t have to keep regretting causing the old designer’s death before he manage to create more designs.

She stared at the designs, unable to speak. She wanted to say how did you do it?, but all that escaped her lips was a breathless, "This is mine?"

Li GuangSha didn’t turn to face her immediately, staring at the dress with a smile, "Of course it is yours. Your sketch. Your concept. I just gave it the body you were too scared to give it yourself. I told you to trust me, Miss Jiang. Don’t you feel confident now? I can assure you no one in this world could ever say this is lacking anymore."
